Peat plant thriving, researching and hopes to expand

What’’s Inside

He spoke about how they are partnering with the University of Minnesota to research a process that would chemically alter peat to absorb sulfates. He hopes to have a competitive product to bring to market soon. In other news, one of APT’s customers has talked about building a plant near the one in Rossburg to do their inoculation process so they don’t have to ship the peat so far. Expansion Due to its success, ATP has leased two new, large peat sites on state and county land. One is near where they are working now and

By ANN SCHWARTZ Although Aitkin County is seen as an economically depressed area, American Peat Technologies (APT) in Rossburg, in rural Aitkin County, is flourishing and hopes to expand. United States Senator Amy Klobuchar, DFL, toured the plant on April 4. She and a small group heard that in 2017, APT had a $1.9 million payroll and spent an additional $2

million on local labor and services. Peggy Jones, vice president of sales and research, explained that they extract peat, dry it and make value-added products. BioAPT is sold to customers who add an inoculant and use it for agriculture. It is planted with seeds as a nitrogen fixer. APTsorb, the second product, is used to take heavy metals out of wastewater. Jones explained that once

the peat has dried it has a granular consistency like coffee grounds. The present plant has 40 employees. Reed-sedge peat used to be windrowed in Rossburg and then loaded up but now there is full-section excavation of peat about a mile away from the plan. They are also reclaiming land from which they have extracted peat. Jones displayed a slide that showed steady growth in the amount of product shipped each year. Canada is a big buyer. “We don’t want to have a trade war with Canada,” Klobuchar agreed. Doug Green, CEO, explained that the APTsorb can be used to take metal out of water in high-tech and low tech applications, such as laying a sock full of it at the edge of the water that is draining.

the other is near Mille Lacs Lake. They are proposing to build a second plant in Seavey Township about four miles northwest of McGrath. It would employ an additional 45 employees. It’s expected that APT will need to complete an Environmental Impact Statement for its proposed expansion. Since that Seavey Bog is a wet area, the peat there would be removed with a dredge. “These are jobs people here to how to do,” stressed Tamara Lowney of APEX consultants, who is working on business expansion in Aitkin County.

bioAPT Microbial Carrier

BioAPT is a microbial carrier manufactured from reedsedge peat. The media is produced in two different forms, granular and powdered. American Peat Technology’s advanced production process and strict quality control parameters result in a consistent, quality product season after season, year after year. The company’s commitment to producing a media of excellence is borne out in the nearly-universal use of bioAPT as a peat-based Rhizobia carrier in granular form. Peat has been used as a Rhizobia carrier for decades and is used worldwide, almost to the exclusion of all other materials. In the past, the principle concern of peat as an inoculant was related almost entirely to the variability of the parent material and its subsequent effect on microbial survivability. American Peat Technology has addressed those shortcomings through three measures: A dedicated harvest area under exclusive permit to APT A state-of-the-art production process that is capable of producing a large volume of media within tight parameters A strict quality control protocol that identifies media that is out of specification and pulls it out of the production process. Info from APT’s website.

reader ribbets Leadership at the City of Crosby favored spending priorities It has become obvious, to even the casual observer, that spending has run amuck in the City of Crosby. The costs include adding FIVE new police vehicles to be designed to suit and assigned to individual officers, the chief and the lieutenant —to be taken home when off-duty; remodeling the police station (even though it was presented that the new police cars would be in place of the new police station); the increase in office staff and creation of two new positions at undisclosed rates of pay.

Yet, other areas of the city do not fair so well with the leadership’s priorities. The recent fire at Hudrliks‘ rental property has made it clear that there is a real need for a ladder truck that is closer than Brainerd. There is a need for other firefighting equipment, for example a new tanker truck in case a fire were to start where there was no readily available water supply. Both of these requests were denied by the city leadership. The city streets need a long-

term (two or five year) plan for regular repair and maintenance. The roads were recently discussed. However, a solution doesn’t appear to be coming any time soon. Currently, the council and mayor are spending public money, so certain department heads live like kings and queens, while the residents’ and property owners’ needs are put on the back burner. Crosby resident and business owner, James J. Hunter

Jaques Art Center needs your help By ANN SCHWARTZ The Jaques Art Center plans a fun and interesting local exhibit from June 1 to July 15 this summer. “Images of Aitkin” will include photos, painting and memorabilia from all around Aitkin County. Exhibit committee members already have made contacts to get Aitkin School, Hill City area, McGregor area and historical items for the show and they need your help. Please let the Jaques borrow your paintings, photos and various objects that feature scenes or businesses or schools or churches or any other aspect of Aitkin County. The items must be turned into the center by Friday, May

11. Everything will be cataloged and returned to you. Now is the time to track down your items and hand them in. Postcard contest In conjunction with the exhibit, images are being accepted that will be printed as a postcard. Images should depict views of Aitkin

or Aitkin County that show the charm and unique aspects of the area. Images, whether art of photography, should be no larger than 12-inches by 18-inches so they can be printed in postcard size. Postcard images are due by Tuesday, April 17. Please hand your items in at 121 2nd Street NW in Aitkin, by the water tower, or call 218927-2363.

Crosby Fire Department saves building Crosby Fire Department responded to a fire in Crosby on April 4. The fire started at a two-story apartment building located on the 100 block of 1st Street SW, Crosby owned by Hudrlik Properties LLC. According to Crosby Fire Chief Jay DeCent, the fire started on the second floor when a clothes dryer vent became plugged. This caused the dryer to overheat and start a fire. Fortunately, the Crosby Fire Department was participating in a drill night and were only a few blocks away, which helped with an extremely good response time. The Crosby firefighting crew went in and quickly extinguished the fire before it could advance into the attic. The Crosby Fire Department had 20 firefighters on the scene. The Brainerd Fire Department was also called to bring their ladder truck, just in case the fire moved into the attic area.
