“Steeple People”

Sunday Morning Worship Scriptures

”Every funeral reminds me of the gift of mortality. Yes, gift. Certainly, it is a burden, too. Knowing that our mortal life is boundaried by our birth and our burial is sobering but motivating. As the poet, Mary Oliver, asks, “So, what will you do with your one wild life?”

June 17 Fourth Sunday after Pentecost

Acts 16:29-34 Ephesians 4:8-10 John 4:5-15

It fell last Friday. That’s right. The church steeple toppled over, landed on the roof, and left a big hole. A storm, plus time, had done their work. Technically, it is the spire of the steeple that fell. But after you hit your head a hundred times crawling above the sanctuary’s ceiling…you will call it a lot of things. About five feet of the steeple/spire jabbed through the roof. The other twenty feet stuck out. Who crawled up on the catwalk to see about it? Jordan Clark did; plus JB Gilbert, George Taylor, and Nick a new NDBC custodian. They were quite the sight. What did I do while they crept around in thin air? I prayed for them. Even as I write this, a giant crane sits in the parking lot. It just pulled the huge thorn out of sanctuary’s skin. A big wound is left; and the insurance adjuster will be here tomorrow to assess the damage.

The steeple fell the day Wilton Looney died. How about that? A pillar of the church breathed his last; and the steeple of the church blew down…all on the same day. “We are not Steeple People right now,” I said at Wilton’s memorial service, “but we are still Easter People!” Steeples point to heaven; but, Easter gets us there.

Wilton was one of our Steeple People. He invested in his church; and we invested in him. But, his gift giving extended far beyond the steeple’s shadow. His long obituary told the tale of many who were touched by his compassion. Just imagine: ridding the world of God-awful polio!

Steeples point to heaven; but they also are a point of reference. Joseph Campbell said that every Medieval city’s highest point was the steeple…a spiritual metaphor. Spires inspire. Our spire is now on the ground, no longer in the air. It looks frail and aged up close. Like I do. So, we will see. We are not Steeple People today; but that is OK. We are still Easter People today and tomorrow and the next day. So is Wilton. Thanks be to God.
