Athens First United Methodist Church Confirmation Sunday November 16, 2014 8:30, 9:45 & 11:00 a.m.

Welcome

We’re glad you’re here! Thank you for joining us today. Members of this congregation have been gathering here to worship since 1804, when our church was formed to minister to the Native American and European settlers in Athens. Over the past two centuries our congregation has changed, but our mission remains the same: to make disciples of Jesus Christ. We are inspired by the words of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, who encouraged believers to “do all the good you can, in all the ways you can.” At Athens First United Methodist, there are many ways to get involved, grow in your faith, and do good in our community. If you are unable to attend worship in person, each Sunday our 11:00 a.m. service is broadcast on WRFC 960 AM, and our 9:45 and 11:00 a.m. services are live-streamed on our website at athensfirstumc.org/webcast.

Nursery

Our nursery is available for infants through four-year-olds on Sundays from 8:15 a.m.– 12:15 p.m. The nursery area is located on the first floor of the building, off the Washington Street entrance.

Children

Worship activity bags (age appropriate for all preschool and elementary children) are available every Sunday in the narthex and by the south entrance of the sanctuary. Children’s Church is held for children in kindergarten through second grade and follows the Children’s Message during 11:00 a.m. worship all Sundays except for Communion Sundays.

Sunday School

We offer Sunday School for all ages, kindergarten through adult, each Sunday from 9:45– 10:45 a.m. For a list of adult Sunday School classes and locations, visit athensfirstumc.org/ adultsundayschool.

Connect

We are blessed to have a large congregation. Because of this, we offer many programs and ministries. It can be overwhelming trying to decide where to get involved. If you would like a buddy to guide you along this process, please notify a Helper. Helpers serve as part of our Welcome Ministry team. Look for them in the narthex or near the altar. You can also contact a Helper through our website athensfirstumc.org/helper. Another great way to learn about the life of our church is through attending a Newcomer Orientation held every second Sunday of the month at 9:45 and 11 a.m. We also encourage you to visit our website, athensfirstumc.org, for information about our ministries, to register for events, and to listen to sermons from our sermon archive. Visit athensfirstumc.org/thesteeple to sign up for our weekly newsletter, the eSteeple. You can also connect with us via social media. Find us @athens_firstumc on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. Our church office is open Monday through Friday, from 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. If you need assistance, please call 706-543-1442.

Written by the Confirmation Class of 2014 We believe in God, our Almighty father, who made the heavens and the earth, and who loves us unconditionally. We believe in Jesus, the son of God, who conquered sin and death and offers each of us the gift of eternal life. We believe in the Holy Spirit, an unseen but constant presence in our lives who gives comfort and offers spiritual direction. We believe that all who repent and accept Christ’s sacrifice form a universal community of faith as Christian brothers and sisters. We believe that we should each do our best to live our lives as Jesus did – by loving and helping others, praying, sharing our faith, reading scripture, and forgiving others as God has forgiven us. We believe that God has a plan for each of our lives and that our life will not be fully joyful and complete until we follow Jesus each day with the help of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

8:30 a.m.“Whom Shall I Fear (God of Angel Armies)” C. Tomlin

You hear me when I call. You are my morning song. Though darkness fills the night it cannot hide the light. Whom shall I fear? You crush the enemy underneath my feet. You are my sword and shield. Though trouble linger still whom shall I fear? I know who goes before me. I know who stands behind. The God of angel armies is always by my side. The One who reigns forever. He is a friend of mine. The God of angel armies is always by my side. My strength is in Your name, for You alone can save. You will deliver me. Yours is the victory. Whom shall I fear? Whom shall I fear? Nothing formed against me shall stand. You hold the whole world in Your hands. I’m holding on to Your promises. You are faithful. You are faithful.

9:45 & 11:00 a.m. “He Put a New Song in My Heart” | Michael Barrett

Wesleyan Youth Choir; Mimi Ackleh, accompanist He put a new song in my heart, a hymn of praise to the Lord and King. He put a new song in my heart to praise His holy name. I will sing to the Lord. He put a new song in my heart, a hymn of praise to the Lord and King. He put a new song in my heart to praise His holy name. I will sing to the Lord.

Confirmation Sunday 2014

God is good! The Confirmation process this fall at Athens First United Methodist Church has been a great gift from God. Our team of Confirmation leaders has been committed to helping this Confirmation class confirm their faith in God and become professing members of The United Methodist Church and the universal church of Jesus Christ. Our Confirmation 2014 journey started with the Confirmation Retreat at Camp Glisson, in Dahlonega, Georgia. While at Camp Glisson, we witnessed these young men and women grow closer together in the Body of the Christ. The purpose of the Confirmation Retreat focused on the power of the Body, team-building, and establishing deeper roots in this community of faith. Retreat highlights included the creek hike to the waterfall, small group Bible study, and singing around the campfire. This Confirmation class participated in eight Confirmation lessons on Sunday nights here at the church. These lessons were filled with a steady dose of study and reflection. The Confirmands examined the confirmation vows of the United Methodist Church, and considered their personal decision to commit to these vows and be confirmed in church this morning. Some of these Confirmands have been baptized before today. Some are being baptized today. Ultimately, this is a time for all of us to rejoice in God’s freedom and power, because it is God who began a good work in each of our lives. Today, these Confirmands are taking a step toward bringing that good work into completion. We acknowledge that even greater things have yet to come on their walk with the Lord. For all of us who are experiencing these precious moments with them, it’s a reminder for us that there is a living God. It’s also a time for us to renew our vows and uphold them by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness. To God be the glory! In Christ, Josh Miles
