IPS Promotes Student Success from Pre-K Through High School

At IPS, we value the relationships that we have built with our diverse families and students — from Pre-K through high school and beyond. Throughout our nearly 15-plus year relationship with students (from Pre-K through high school), IPS collaborates with our families and community partners to ensure that our scholars are college- and career-ready using a multilevel academic approach, which includes: Foundation & Introduction (Elementary School, Pre-K–Grade 5), Preparation & Exploration (Middle School, Grades 6–8), and Focus & Opportunities (High School, Grades 9–12). Like a ladder, each stage provides students with rich academic experiences and mastery of state standards; offers opportunities to explore challenging and relevant curriculum; and gives students the freedom and guidance to focus on their specific interests and talents.

FOUNDATION & INTRODUCTION Students develop strong academic foundations through mastery of core curriculum (reading, language, math, social studies, history) based on state standards. Through a variety of Choice programming — including Paideia, Reggio, Montessori, Spanish Immersion, International Baccalaureate, Visual and Performing Arts — students develop an understanding of their learning styles and can choose to attend a school that best fits the way they learn, leading to success throughout their academic career. Teachers are nurturing and supportive, but challenge students academically so they are prepared to meet the rigors of IPS’ middle school curriculum.

ELEMENTARY PreK-Grade 5

PREPARATION & EXPLORATION Students begin preparing for the challenging curriculum and expectations of high school by developing strong critical thinking, communication and collaboration skills, and through mastery of advanced coursework. Through specialized curriculum and Choice programs, students begin to explore career interests via STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), world languages and project-based learning, and through an early introduction to the district’s six College- and Career-Themed Academies; 45 academic pathways; Early and Middle College programs; and Classical Education options.

FOCUS & OPPORTUNITIES Through the New IPS High School Experience, students are actively taking courses aligned with their chosen career paths through IPS’ six College- and Career-Themed Academies, 45 academic pathways and high-performing Choice programs, all which align with college entry requirements and industry demand. Students earn job certifications while in high school, participate in internships and obtain college credits from local colleges and universities. Upon graduation, IPS high school students are college- and career-ready, which means they have the knowledge, skills and abilities to succeed in postsecondary education and economically-viable career opportunities.
