THE

URBAN HAWK

By Jerome A. Jackson

... some are permanent, some are ‘snowbirds’

6 Expressions Nov. 2017

WHEN

we think of hawks, we often think of wide-open spaces, wild areas – not of city streets and backyards.Yet the most common and commonly seen hawk in south Florida – the red-shouldered hawk – lives in our midst. It lives in habitats we’ve created. It accepts us as neighbors, tolerating our presence with apparent inquisitiveness. This association with humans occurs throughout its range in eastern North America and in California, but nowhere do these hawks seem more abundant or people-friendly than in south Florida. A red-shouldered hawk often remains perched as we walk toward it to get a better view or to take a photo, seeming as interested in us as we are in it. Red-shouldered hawks are intimately associated with forested areas and forest edges – especially near wetlands – hence their absence from the arid west. Indeed, I tell my students that they can easily identify a red-shouldered hawk by the rust on its shoulders at the bend of its wings, jokingly suggesting that it gets that rust from being in the swamp so much. My lame humor helps them link the bird with its habitat. Rust color at each shoulder and broad black bands alternating with narrow white bands on a redshouldered hawk’s tail make this hawk easily identifiable. An adult red-shouldered hawk has an almost waffle-like pattern of orange red bars on the breast and pale rust bars on the belly and the feathers of its legs.Young red-shouldered hawks show less rust than adults, the white bars of their tails are more gray than white, and they have breasts heavily marked with vertical streaks formed of nearly linked teardrop spots of brown. Red-shouldered hawks are with us year-round, but some northern red-shouldered hawks migrate to Florida for the winter. Northern birds typically have darker heads than the residents. The red-shouldered hawk often perches on a tree branch, fence post or utility pole, and typically hunts from a perch. But it also soars, riding the wind on wings that span 3 to 4 feet. Females are larger than males, thus better capable of defending a nest and young – even against a hungry mate. A good view of a soaring red-shouldered hawk can reveal why it was given the

scientific name lineatus – meaning lined. The black and white lines on its spread wings and the broad black bars separated by narrow white bars on its tail are boldly conspicuous and help people identify it. The perfect view of those lines would be if you were lucky enough to see a red-shouldered hawk sunning. To sun, birds spread their wings and tail while on the ground in full sun. Ultraviolet light of the sun is believed to kill feather parasites and when sunning a bird almost seems to be in a trance. I photographed one in a forest opening at Corkscrew Sanctuary as it remained sunning for at least 20 minutes before returning to its perch to hunt. As hunters red-shouldered hawks perch patiently for long periods, watching for potential prey. They’re generalists, eating a diversity of insects, frogs, lizards, small snakes, small mammals, fish stranded as pools dry up, and only occasionally a small bird. The blue jay seems to recognize the potential danger posed by a red-shouldered hawk and bedevils a hawk, keeping the neighborhood aware of its presence by mimicking its characteristic loud “kee-ahr” – a call the hawk gives mostly before and during nesting season, but that the blue jays voice year-round. The blue jay’s imitation also may divert the attention of other birds from their nests, providing opportunity for a jay to feed on chicks or eggs of other songbirds. After all, a hawk in the neighborhood isn’t the only predator in town. n Jerome A. Jackson is a professor emeritus at Florida Gulf Coast University and a wellknown ornithologist.

So many Late Nights By Dayna Harpster

L

ots of local people were in the audience for a David Letterman show. That’s probably not surprising since he reigned over late-night television for 33 years. Late Night with David Letterman started in February 1982 on NBC. He switched over to CBS in 1993 for the Late Show with David Letterman, which ended in May 2015. Bill Murray was a guest on Letterman’s first and last shows. And between those years, Letterman hosted another 6,026 shows and a late-night legend was made. As the comedian and writer receives the Mark Twain Prize for Humor at the Kennedy Center in a program airing this month on PBS, we hereby adapt his signature feature:

TOP 10

Things Southwest Floridians Observed as Audience Members at a David Letterman Show

10

It was freezing in the theater. Three people who attended tapings in different years said the studio was an icehouse.

9

You’d get a good seat if you looked like a celebrity. According to Mark Loren, “They grabbed us off the street because my wife looked exactly like Sandra Bullock ... then they put us in the front row!”

8 7 6

Popular songs of the day played in the theater before the show started. The set looked much smaller in person than it did on TV. Because it was taped in New York, anything could happen to slow you down when you were trying to get to the theater. Here’s what Mike Braun recalled about his experience in 2000: “My wife and I … were walking down Broadway and were passing by the Ed Sullivan Theater when, all of a sudden, a man comes running out of the front door and up to us, and asks me if I know the name of Dave Letterman’s sidekick. I blurted out ‘Biff Henderson.’ He gave us two passes to that night’s show, being taped just an hour or so later. Cool. We were excited. “We did a little shopping nearby, buying a bunch of things, oddly enough including a package of porcupine quills to use as decoration back home. During our shopping spree we got locked into the store because presidential candidate Al Gore was in the neighborhood and Secret Service was checking everything. “We finally got unlocked and made a dash for the studio because it was time for the taping. When we get there we find the only guest that night is, Al Gore! We have to submit to Secret Service questioning and, even though they look at our package of porcupine quills, they let us in. OBSERVATIONS WGCU staff shares what it’s like to hold down the public media fort in a hurricane

AS

a member of Florida Public Radio Emergency Network, WGCU is one of 13 public radio stations that reach 99 percent of Florida residents during statewide emergencies. As with everyone who calls Southwest Florida home, the devastating wrath of Irma put WGCU radio staff to the test. After all, it’s the job of the WGCU radio reporters to keep you informed and the job of WGCU’s broadcast engineers to keep the station on the air. To accomplish this goal meant living at the WGCU studios – in many cases with family and pets included. Here are a few of their experiences. Some are serious, others light, and the latter is in no way meant to minimize the pain Irma caused many people.

It was quite a production for the Chin Quee family

From the GM: What hath Irma taught

Social media coordinator worked up a storm

WGCU Production Manager Richard Chin Quee is accustomed to filling multiple roles around the studio, and during Irma he added a few more. Of course, the most important thing was ensuring top-of-the-hour oneminute weather updates, then 10-minute updates, from FPREN reporters and local journalists Jessica Meszaros and Quincy Walters, who were stationed at the Collier and Lee Emergency Operations Centers. Once the storm was here, Chin Quee also supervised the 24-hour, “wall-to-wall” coverage – “which means we start talking and don’t stop until the storm is gone,” he said. Meanwhile his wife, Kristina, and daughter, Zoey, 5, made themselves at home in the broadcast building. Zoey wrote all over the whiteboards in the conference rooms and chased John Davis’ dog, Finn, Chin Quee said. Chin Quee’s roles expanded to include de facto chef, he said, as well as musician. He brought his guitar and Walters brought his trumpet, and they played together in the evenings for the next several days as they waited for power at their homes. “We became like a little pop-up family,” Chin Quee said.

• It’s really convenient to sleep in your office for a week. Wake up, roll out of bed and you’re at your desk. • (Visiting) Washington Post video and print reporters, NPR reporters and producers were Harvey veterans suffering bad hurricane fatigue. (When the power went out in the hotel rooms where the Post reporters were staying, they sought refuge at WGCU.) • Watching the WGCU news team coalesce, mature and gain three years of experience in three days was rewarding. So proud of their teamwork and dedication. • WGCU Engineering team was amazing. WGCU-TV, WGCU-FM, WMKO-FM remained on the air throughout the storm. • I’m very thankful WGCU studios were built to withstand a Category 3 storm – and wish all buildings were. • On a lighter note: Beware of suddenlyfriendly dogs. They only want your fried chicken. Editor’s note:The human associated with that dog, John Davis, confirmed this. Finn is a 3-year-old male Chihuahua mix.“He has had fried chicken before,” Davis said.“He knew exactly what he was doing. I heard Rick yell out his name from my office and then Finn ran in with the chicken in his mouth and hid under my desk to eat it.”

WGCU Social Media Coordinator Tara Calligan started her storm experience at home in south Fort Myers, but moved from her apartment to a friend’s house in Fort Myers’ Botanica Lakes, where there was more room for family and pets. And it was not in a flood zone. She worked posting social media updates via phone about 15 hours a day Thursday through Sunday. “It was something inside me that I had to get this information out to people, regardless of what my plans were,” Calligan said. Earlier her boyfriend, Tom Sparkes, had realized he had to step up and make some plans for the two of them and their cat, Luna, because Calligan continued to be single-minded. “My alerts from Florida Storms Facebook and app were going off at 11 pm, 1 am and 5 am,” Calligan said. “He finally said to me, ‘You need to turn that off and get some sleep.’” “At 6:30 pm on Sunday it started to get really nasty outside and I contacted the news team and said ‘I’m out. I can’t upload anymore,’” she added. At that point, Calligan and Sparkes pulled the blender out of the freezer and poured themselves strawberry pina coladas.

Watch WGCU HDTV The VA and the Human Cost of War Monday, Nov. 6 @ 9 pm

The VA:

MORE THAN HOSPITALS By Dayna Harpster

IN 1636

the settlers at Plymouth Colony were at war with the Pequot Indians. To help their fellow colonists – soldiers disabled in the war – the Pilgrims passed a law pledging the colony’s support for the injured. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs traces its history to that time. But in TheVA:The Human Cost of War, airing this month on WGCU HGTV, filmmaker Ric Burns asserts that the starting point for the VA was the Veterans Bureau in the 1920s. Burns’ work is an hour-long documentary, and surely a century of history is enough to tackle. In publicity materials, producing studio Steeplechase Films calls the VA a “beleaguered American institution.” The film explores “how and why it has changed over time, how it has come to be broken in critical ways in recent generations and how it may be reformed going forward.” Another documentary airing this month in two parts on the World channel delves into what happened in that 17th century Pilgrim-Pequot war. Mystic Voices:The Story of the PequotWar airs Nov. 18. Narrated by Academy Award-winner Roy Scheider, the documentary covers “a pivotal event in early American history that set the stage for the ultimate domination of all Native Americans by Europeans,” according to the distributor, American Public Television. An inauspicious beginning, if so, by the contemporary view that looks askance at Columbus’ “discovery” of America and the notion of manifest destiny. Regardless, few would argue against the need for a governmental entity that organizes and oversees the wellbeing of America’s veterans. That entity began assisting veterans with medical needs only, then expanded to include specific facilities for that care, adding programs for widows and dependents, vocational programs and others. As life – and wars – became more complicated, so did the methods and facilities required to treat them and the programs needed to ensure quality of life, like home loans and the GI bill. n

So what does the VA do today? Earlier this year, President Donald Trump appointed Dr. David J. Shulkin as secretary of the VA. The Senate confirmed the appointment in February. Shulkin is a medical doctor with a background in health care administration. He previously was the undersecretary of the department. The VA secretary is a member of the Cabinet. The VA system comprises 1,700 sites of health care involving 9 million veterans. Among them is the Lee County VA Healthcare Center in Cape Coral. It handles issues and problems from mental health and substance abuse to women’s health, dental and eye health, surgery, orthopedics, nutrition, diagnostics, physical therapy and more. The Cape Coral center opened in December 2012. It replaced the VA Outpatient Clinic that was located in Fort Myers. There are also VA Centers all over the country, including 26 in Florida, that offer counseling for veterans of war zones and their loved ones. Nationally, the VA employs about 378,000 people. Its program costs ran $273 billion for the fiscal year ended in September 2016. In addition to health care, the VA oversees disability benefits, vocational training, education assistance, home loans, life insurance and burial and memorial benefits to eligible veterans and family members. wgcu.org

Tardif heads north with StoryCorps We recently bid farewell to longtime WGCU colleague Amy Tardif, our FM news director and station manager. Fortunately she’s staying in the NPR family, having moved to Chicago to direct the StoryCorps production facility there. It would be impossible to list all of Tardif’s impacts and accomplishments here. Among the highlights: Her program Lucia’s Letter on human trafficking received a prestigious Peabody Award, an Edward R. Murrow Award, a gold medal from the New York Festivals and first place for Best Documentary from the Public Radio News Directors Inc. She was the first woman in radio to chair the Radio, Television and Digital News Association She was twice selected to serve as a managing editor for NPR’s Next Generation Radio Project and held positions on a number of industry boards of directors. Closer to home, Tardif was the producer and host of Gulf Coast Live Arts Edition for eight years and spent 14 years as WGCU’s local host of NPR’s Morning Edition. Amy spent five years as producer and managing editor of WGCU-TV’s former monthly environmental documentary programs In Focus on the Environment and Earth Edition. She was instrumental in the planning and growth of Florida Gulf Coast University’s journalism department. “Amy’s 25-year career at WGCU was stellar,” said General Manager Rick Johnson. “Her rise from reporter to Morning Edition host to News Director to FM Station Manager was fueled by her dedication to journalistic excellence. She leaves behind a talented, committed staff and a continuing legacy of that same journalistic excellence. We will miss her but all of us at WGCU wish her the best in her new career with StoryCorps.”

Word on the ‘Street’: Christmas is around the corner

KiDS THE TITLE: Once Upon a Sesame Street Christmas THE SETTING: Christmas Eve on Sesame Street. THE PLOT: After putting out cookies for Santa, Elmo’s dad tells him a bedtime story about his great-great-grandmonster Elmo and how Sesame Street was once an unfriendly street. Everyone was grouchy and there was no holiday spirit. With the help of Grandmonster Elmo’s new friends, they try to find a way to bring back the holiday spirit in hopes that Santa would come to visit. The lesson: They learn that all you need is kindness. The takeaway: There’s nothing like a holiday story set on Sesame Street to take you back years and years, no matter how old you are. Tune in to WGCU HDTV @ 11 am on Wednesday, Nov. 22, Thursday, Nov. 23 and Friday Nov. 24 for an hour of nostalgic Christmas cheer.

LETTERMAN from page 9

“To boot, we get seated in the second row, stage center right. The show was great, with Warren Zevon as the musical guest, one of his last such performances before he died of cancer. Gore was pretty good, and as the show ended and he made to leave, he bounded over to the end of the stage and started shaking hands” (including Braun’s).

Trivia questions were sometimes involved (see above). Kari Koehler-Cordisco adds this: “Before we even arrived in New York City, we had requested show tickets and a staff member called to quiz us on our Letterman knowledge. It was a fairly simple multiple choice quiz about some show basics, such as ‘What is the name of the list Dave does during every show?’”

4

To a fan, it was a little like entering the Twilight Zone. Mark Bickel said this: “The feeling was surreal. I had been a huge fan since college days so being there in person felt like I was in another dimension. … I remember how clean the stage looked. It glistened.”

3.

It wasn’t unusual to see new talent. Mark Trude now lives near Washington, D.C., but attended a show in New York in about 1994. “One of the guests was a relatively unknown comedian by the name of Jon Stewart,” he said.

2

It could be a disappointment. Kara Hado Minoui was in the audience in August 1994. While it was fun to watch Bruce Willis ride through a studio aisle on horseback, she was underwhelmed with his performance as the musical guest. “He performed as his musical alter ego, Bruno. There was lots of harmonica. To be honest, I felt a little gypped – I was hoping for something more along the lines of R.E.M.,” she said.

Step out in Bare Feet with Mickela Mallozzi Three-time Emmy Award-winning host and producer Mickela Mallozzi takes on the world one step at a time. On Create this month are a series of her travel shows featuring a unique approach – through the destination’s dances. A professional dancer and trained musician, Mallozzi set out to see the world, taking her camera and a need to dance. She re-discovered her family’s heritage in southern Italy and danced the tango in Buenos Aires. On episodes airing from 6 am to noon on Saturday, Nov. 4, see what happens when Mallozzi stays a little closer to home. The Stamford, Conn., native explores New York through its various cultural groups and their traditional dances. She visits Chinatown, experiences a gypsy festival in Manhattan and a Serbian Soul Party in Brooklyn. With the Mexican community, she learns traditional folk dance and joins an all-female mariachi band. She visits Little Ukraine in the East Village for Pierogi Day and takes drum lessons in the streets of Flatbush with a Haitian community.

For Dave, it was good – and bad – to be king. “Clearly, this is Dave’s theater and Dave’s show, and we had been granted an opportunity to witness him at work,” was Koehler-Cordisco’s overriding impression. When she was in the audience with her husband, Todd, in 2013, “The one thing that really struck us during one of the breaks was that Dave seemed to be very upset about something. We mean very! … He was presented with some papers at his desk and we could see him scribbling on them and gesturing wildly. At one point during all of this, he takes off his suit jacket – clearly in disgust by what is happening. But then, as soon as we are told we are about to go back to taping, he dons his jacket again and is back to smiling, showing that gap-toothed grin and ready to greet his next guest!” n

Against the backdrop of North Korea’s nuclear advances and escalating regional tensions, we ask: How should the U.S. respond to its most urgent national security threats abroad? And how will the U.S.-China relationship play out under President Donald Trump? General David Petraeus and military historian Max Boot provide a broad overview of America’s strategic interests abroad. Immediately following, four foreign policy luminaries take to the stage to discuss the future of U.S. relations with China. n wgcu.org
