White Memorial Presbyterian Church | November 2018

Thanksgiving and Christ the King

WORSHIP TIMES

A while back my good friend, Glen Bell, Pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Sarasota, FL, sent me a book. The book is called Light When It Comes. Written by Chris Anderson from Oregon, it is part memoir, prayer book, and poem. On page 58 Chris Anderson writes:

There’s an old story about a wise man who went into the desert to fast and to pray. He wanted to throw himself into the arms of God. But one day he was walking and he fell off a cliff. He would have plunged to his death if he hadn’t grabbed a branch partway down. Hanging by his arms, high above the river and the rocks, he cried out: “Lord, Lord! Are you there? Help me! Tell me what to do!” “Let go,” came the calm and quiet voice of the Lord. “Let go.” Seconds went by. Then the wise man cried our again: “Anyone else out there?”

Anyone else out there? Instead of giving thanks for the branch which had saved his life; instead of heeding the voice of God and believing beyond reason in order to let go; instead of giving thanks for the voice in the first place; instead, instead, instead…. Instead of a hundred different choices, the man in the story does the most human thing of all: he tries to negotiate a better deal. He tries to wriggle his way into a change of his circumstances. November is a busy month in the life of the church. We celebrate All Saints Day and we observe Evensong, where we give thanks for the lives of those we have lost. We begin to prepare for Advent and start to peek toward the manger of Bethlehem, ready to burst with thanks for the birth of hope into the world. We celebrate Thanksgiving itself where blessings are named, celebrated, and shared. We end the month with Christ the King Sunday, when we acknowledge the wonder and power of the Son of God; we believe that he can save us. Like the man in the little story, we have trouble trusting this much. We’d rather believe the world is going to hell because the election didn’t go our way. We’d rather feel like a victim because we didn’t get the best “branch,” the luckiest breaks, the easiest path, or the most pain-free life. We’d rather hoard our treasures than share them with the school, the church, or the food bank down the street because they give us a sense of security. Anyone else out there? In the end the call is to “let go.” Let go as a means of giving thanks and as a means of declaring the power of God. My good friend, Dean Thompson (who happens to be one of the best theologians in America) has often said, “In the end, the only question which matters is ‘who do you trust?’” My prayer for us this November is that we will trust the living God. My prayer is that will we trust the crucified one. My prayer is that we will trust the Spirit of life. My prayer is that we will trust the Trinity of grace much more than we fear the terrors of this world. When we trust like this we are truly serving Christ as King and we are truly giving thanks. May grace abound,

Christopher H. Edmonston Pastor

BLUE IS THE NEW PURPLE FOR ADVENT “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness— on them light has shined.”

- Isaiah 9:2

As we prepare for the beginning of the liturgical year, the Session, with the assistance of the music staff and the worship committee, has officially adopted the color Royal Blue to represent the season of Advent. The Presbyterian Church USA, of which White Memorial is a part, is a reformed and always-reforming church that now recommends using either purple or blue for Advent. There are multiple reasons to change from purple to blue, which signifies the darkness of the night sky before dawn and the coming of Christ’s light. The season of Advent is filled with darkness and anticipation, and leads us to the brightness Christ’s birth brings to the world. Throughout history, the Virgin Mary has been depicted in blue both in painting and iconography. Blue represents hope, expectation and heaven, and will especially enable children to recognize the uniqueness of the seasons through color. Purple will continue to be the color of Lent which represents penitence and preparation.
