Miss Hospitality contestants bring smiles to Forrest General patients Submitted A group of 29 young women from across the state who are competing in the 2015 Mississippi Miss Hospitality pageant took time out of their busy pageant week to visit Forrest General on Tuesday. During their visit, the contestants received a welcome from Millie Swan, Forrest General’s chief marketing and medical staff services officer. The contestants brought joy and smiles to patients as they toured the hospital’s Rehabilitation department. “It is always a pleasure to have the Miss Hospitality contestants visit Forrest General,” said Swan. “The time they spend here spreads cheer to patients and staff
while giving these outstanding young women an opportunity to learn more about Forrest General and how we care for our community. Inspiring women to take action for their health is the central goal of our Spirit of Women program, and we enjoy the opportunity to talk to these young women about the importance of making healthy choices beginning at a young age. By Kay Scarborough The DOG DAYS (the hottest and most unhealthy days of the year) are almost over, I feel cooler already! I’m so glad not to be heading back to the classroom this month. The little darlings are wonderful, but as a kindergarten assistant, I worked harder than ever before, for a lot less money. (You can eat your lunch in the cafeteria while a five year old is throwing up at the next table!) Did you know that ginger can help soothe an upset stomach? I buy crystallized or candied ginger, when I can find it at the grocery, check the baking aisle. Do not eat the roots of ornamental ginger! Just learned a new use for my special chocolate mint, sprinkle some on vanilla ice cream or yogurt, absolutely delicious. My basil and parsley are holding on, but just barely. The heat is doing a number on our yard. The Dutch Iris are overcrowded and looking awful, guess its time to dig and divide. When your perennials have finished blooming, you can cut back the flower stalks. Sometimes gardening can be brutal. Any plant that can survive and even thrive in this heat deserves to be planted in your yard. I see crepe myrtles still in bloom, daylilies and lantana (if white flies don’t eat it up); ornamental grasses can be real show-stoppers. Zinnia, vinca and Mexican petunia are also showing off their colors. The salvia and Chinese lantern in front of the deck get full, western exposure and still look pretty. Dahlias love the heat and are blooming now. There is a reason these have been Southern staples forever. When you’re driving around, wasting gas, check out your neighbors’ blooms and plan to add your favorites to your own garden. Be realistic, irrigation is a must! August is the time of year when summer insects are at their worst. People like us, who enjoy(?) working outdoors, need to take precautions against mosquitoes. Now we know that a little bite can make us pretty sick. We all know to remove standing water, in any amount. But, I never thought to empty and clean out pet food and water dishes. We have two birdbaths that we try to keep clean, and refill often with fresh water. Thank goodness for those “scattered” showers. If you work or play outside in late afternoon or evening, wear long pants and long sleeves, and remember to use repellant. People in the know say to select a product with DEET. We have had some success discouraging mosquitoes on the deck by spraying around the chairs and the back door with brown Listerine, (store brands work also), guess they don’t like the smell. This won’t kill the pests, but they go bother the neighbors! Consider adding a bat house to your yard. One bat can eat up to 500 mosquitoes per hour! Oversize load and/ or flat bed experience is a plus. Construction/ building experience also helpful. Current open positions are based out of our Purvis, MS Division, 132 Central Industrial Row. Work week consist of a Monday through Friday schedule with Saturday work during our peak season. Semi drivers are home most nights, on average overnight is 3-4 nights per month. Delivery & Maintenance drivers leave out on Mondays, stay out 3-4 nights per week, returning home on Thursday or Friday and home EVERY WEEKEND.
