Family Worship Guide Week of May 31st, 2015 One of the ways SC Kids partners with parents to make disciples of Jesus is to provide resources that promote discipleship in the home. This Family Worship Guide is intended to give parents content from this week’s lesson to discuss with their children throughout the week.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES For additional family devotionals you can purchase “Old Story New: Ten Minute Devotions to Draw Your Family to God” at amazon.com or from the Sacred City Bookstore on Sunday.

REVIEW This Sunday’s lesson was called “The Hidden Treasure” and comes from Matthew 13:31-46. For a children’s bible version you can refer to Story 97 of the Gospel Story Bible.

GOSPEL In Matthew 13:35 Jesus quoted Psalm 78:2 to explain why he was speaking in parables. These parables reveal the secrets of the gospel that lay hidden since the creation of the world. The treasure in the field and the pearl of great price have great value because of the gospel. The gospel is an invaluable treasure because it makes a way for us to become children of God and enter his kingdom. Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and for the gospel, who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions, and in the age to come eternal life” (Mark 10:29–30).

DISCUSS What did the man who found the treasure & the man who found the valuable pearl sell in order to buy what they found? He sold everything they owned. How are these parables about Jesus? There is nothing else more valuable than Jesus! If Jesus is the most valuable thing in the world what kind of things can we give up? Lead your children to think about what is valuable to them and how Jesus is better. Ask them if they would be willing to give those things up in order to follow Jesus.

SING Singing is a great way for kids to experience and memorize God’s Word. Here are a few family favorites: Preschool age - “Cedarmont Kids - Bible Songs” and for Preschool and Elementary age children we recommend the Morning Star Catechism CD (available at the SC bookstore) and Seeds Family Worship.

PRAY Pray that Jesus would become the most valuable thing in your life so that you would be willing to give up anything that might draw your attention away from Jesus.
