Family Worship Guide Week of July 27th, 2015 One of the ways SC Kids partners with parents to make disciples of Jesus is to provide resources that promote discipleship in the home. This Family Worship Guide is intended to give parents content from this week’s lesson to discuss with their children throughout the week.

What did Jesus say happens to those who praise themselves? What about those who are humble? The proud will be humbled and the humble who admit theorists will be lifted up by God. How are sinners saved from their sin? By putting their faith in Jesus & trusting in him for our righteousness.

REVIEW This Sunday’s lesson was called “The Pharisee & the Tax Collector” and comes from Luke 18:9–17. For a children’s bible version you can refer to Story 105 of the Gospel Story Bible.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES For additional family devotionals you can purchase “Old Story New: Ten Minute Devotions to Draw Your Family to God” at amazon.com or from the Sacred City Bookstore on Sunday.

GOSPEL John We will never be justified by the good works we do. If our body is dirty, no amount of clean clothes can make us clean. We might look clean on the outside and fool our friends, but we would still be dirty. The Pharisee was a sinner just like the tax collector. He was trusting that his good works would get him into heaven. The Bible tells us that our good works can never get us into heaven (Ephesians 2:8–9). If one trusts in good works, he will be humbled in the day of judgment. However, if we humble ourselves, confess our sin, and trust in Jesus, then through the gospel of grace, God will raise us up. There is only one way the tax collector could walk away justified (Luke 18:14). It was because of his faith in God as his only hope for salvation. Although the parable doesn’t mention how we are saved, when the tax collector placed his hope in God’s mercy, he placed his hope in God’s Savior, Jesus, who took away his punishment when we died upon the cross.

SING Singing is a great way for kids to experience and memorize God’s Word. Here are a few family favorites: Preschool age - “Cedarmont Kids - Bible Songs” and for Preschool and Elementary age children we recommend the Morning Star Catechism CD (available at the SC bookstore) as well as Seeds Family Worship.

PRAY Confess your sins to God, including the sins of trying to be good enough for God and relying on your works for salvation. Thank God for his forgiveness in Christ and the righteousness we are given through the gospel. Ask that you and your friends, family, and neighbors could receive God’s kingdom with child-like faith.
