Family Worship Guide Week of August 9th, 2015 One of the ways SC Kids partners with parents to make disciples of Jesus is to provide resources that promote discipleship in the home. This Family Worship Guide is intended to give parents content from this week’s lesson to discuss with their children throughout the week.

REVIEW This Sunday’s lesson was called “Jesus & Zacchaeus” and comes from Luke 18:18-19:10. For a children’s bible version you can refer to Story 107 of the Gospel Story Bible.

GOSPEL Jesus makes the connection to the gospel in this story. Jesus announces, “Today salvation has come to this house.” (Luke 19:9). Though it seems that Zacchaeus was trying to draw near to Jesus, it was in fact Jesus who came to save Zacchaeus. The mission of Christ to “seek and to save the lost” (Luke 19:10) remains his mission today. Zacchaeus met Jesus along the road, we meet Jesus by reading his Word. But either way, we don’t come to Jesus as much as he seeks us. For nobody comes to Jesus unless the Father draws him (John 6:44).

DISCUSS What did Jesus tell the rich young ruler who was looking for eternal life? “Sell everything you have and give the money to the poor. Then come follow me.” What did the rich young ruler to do to have eternal life? He went away sad, because he wanted his money more than he wanted Jesus. What did Jesus say about the rich young ruler? It is easier for a camel to go through the small hole in a swerving needle than it is for a rich person to enter into the kingdom of God. But anyone who gives up something for God will be richly rewarded in heaven. Where did Jesus find Zacchaeus? Up in a tree because he was too short to see Jesus walk by.

How was Zacchaeus different from the Rich Young Ruler? He would generously give away his money to the poor and pay back anyone that he wronged. What was the reason for Jesus coming? “The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES For additional family devotionals you can purchase “Old Story New: Ten Minute Devotions to Draw Your Family to God” at amazon.com or from the Sacred City Bookstore on Sunday.

SING Singing is a great way for kids to experience and memorize God’s Word. Here are a few family favorites: Preschool age - “Cedarmont Kids - Bible Songs” and for Preschool and Elementary age children we recommend the Morning Star Catechism CD (available at the SC bookstore) as well as Seeds Family Worship.

PRAY Praise Jesus for coming to seek and to save the lost! Thank him for being so generous toward us and making us rich in Christ so we don't have to be rich with money. Ask Jesus to help us to be generous and willing to follow him at any cost.
