Welcome to Shalimar UMC We are so glad you’ve chosen to worship with us this week! Hearing assistance devices are available for the Sanctuary. Please see an usher to obtain these aids. Enjoy fellowship, coffee, and snacks in the Family Life Center Gym between worship services.

O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.

O ur Missi on REA C H, T EA C H, and S EN D We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Wors hi p S ervices B reak F re e Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00 pm in the Family Life Center. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory. T raditions At 8:00 and 11:00 am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00 service. Conn ect At 9:30 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre edom At 11:07 Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Philip’s Focus What a week this has been as reality continues to set in of the devastation of Hurricane Michael. Let us continue to remember in prayer our neighbors to the east. There are some members of our congregation that have also experienced losses from the storm. Let us hold in prayer all affected by Hurricane Michael. Also, let us continue to show our love through our financial giving in this catastrophic time of need. Thank you for what you have already generously and quickly given. I am so honored to serve as your pastor in a church that is so generous in times of need! This week I have heard of our congregation members offering love and support to our neighbors to the east of us in the recovery from Hurricane Michael. I am grateful to our members who have traveled to Panama City and served in such a time as this. We also have members who have opened their homes to evacuees seeking to find some sense of normalcy. Our first church team is heading over to Panama City Thursday, Oct. 18 to deliver some essentials such as bottled water, gas, baby food, non-perishable food, and gift cards. I’m grateful to our lay volunteers who are traveling with me to be of help. Thank you, congregation, for your generous outpouring of supplies to those in need. We will continue to look for the best ways possible going forward in which our church of great resources and wonderful leaders can be of the best help in this devastating time for so many. Our Annual Conference is also keeping us informed of ways to help. See next page for the latest information as of this writing for our consideration as well. Please notice there is a word about training and the appeal for Stephen Ministers. Shalom, Philip Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor [email protected]

Hurricane Michael Disaster Response, October 17, 2018

Many of you have expressed interest in how you can immediately help the survivors of Hurricane Michael. Prayer, monetary donations directly to the conference, and supplies are ways you can help now. The United Methodist Church has a history of being in storm-damaged areas for the duration and will be in partnership with the Gulf Coast for years to come. Commercial grade tarps larger than 16 x 20, roofing nails and furring strips are in great demand. Our district collection sites are prepared to accept those items in addition to the previously announced supply list. We are now making our first calls for in-conference trained ERT teams who can be self contained (bring your own food, water, gas and either have your own housing/lodging or enter and leave the same day). These teams are needed to clean up debris and tarp roofs. If you can serve in this way, contact Katie Winton at 205.381.2356. There are also several upcoming trainings in the coming days. The following website will give you the training information, awfumc.org/ERTTraining. Assessments are needed in order to apply for our another UMCOR grant. We also need people to serve food and distribute supplies in certain areas (no ERT training required but an ERT-trained leader or participant in the group is needed). If you can serve in this way, please contact Katie Winton at 205.381.2356. Rev. Britney Toner has published a list of items she is transporting to the Port St. Joe area. Community Life UMC in Gulf Breeze, FL, is collecting these items. Stephen ministers will be needed to work shifts to listen and pray with those who have survived this tragedy. Contact Rev. Ashley Davis for more information and to register. We will frequently continue to update these needs and communicate that to the conference. Thank you to everyone who is bringing hope and the love of Christ to those who need it most.

All Saints Weekend All Saints Weekend will be celebrated here at SUMC on Nov. 3 and 4. This is when we recognize our members that have gone on before us this past year. For the next two weeks, you will find a form in your Worship Guide. Please complete this form to honor or remember loved ones with a contribution that will go to the Worship Celebrations Fund. Below are pictures of some of the purchases that have been made with these funds over the past year. You will see additional paraments, a processional cross, and Bible stand. In previous years, these funds have been used for other items that have included the matching easels that are used for funeral and memorial services as well as the commissioning of our outdoor nativity.

Iona Salter Circle The Iona Salter Circle will meet on Tuesday, October 23 in the Family Life Center, Room 106, at 11:00 am for their annual Halloween gathering. Please bring a dish to share and Halloween dress is an option. Our Circle is open to all ladies of the church. We are a group of maturing ladies who gather for Christian fellowship.

Employment Opportunity Church Family, Our incredible organist, Mary Jo Horner, has told me of her desire to retire. While I certainly want Mary Jo to remain as our organist, I understand her desire to set aside the week-by-week responsibilities that come from preparing and playing multiple services. Mary Jo has been playing the organ for over 60 years! She has played for Chapel services on military bases around the world. We have been privileged to have her as our organist since January 2008. Mary Jo and Chuck are not leaving Shalimar and will continue to be an active and vital part of our congregation. Mary Jo has told me that she wants to be the “first call” substitute for the next organist. Also, Mary Jo will continue as our organist until we find our next one. She also has graciously agreed to serve on the selection committee as we seek the new organist. We plan to begin advertising for the organist position this next week. You will see that advertisement post this next week when the Beacon is updated. With that, if you have anyone who would be interested in applying, please ask them to contact me. Once we have secured the next organist, we will honor Mary Jo and celebrate her years of service here at SUMC as well as her career as a church organist. Please join me in expressing our gratitude for Mary Jo’s many years of service to God’s Kingdom and how that service has had such a wonderful impact on our ministries here at Shalimar! Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow!
