Welcome to Shalimar UMC We are so glad you’ve chosen to worship with us this week! Hearing assistance devices are available for the Sanctuary. Please see an usher to obtain these aids. Enjoy fellowship, coffee, and snacks in the Family Life Center Gym between worship services.

O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.

O ur Missi on REA C H, T EA C H, and S EN D We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Wors hi p S ervices B reak Fre e Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00 pm in the Family Life Center opening with a gathering and fellowship time at 5:30 pm. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory. T raditions At 8:00 and 11:00 am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00 service. Conn ect At 9:30 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre edom At 11:07 Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Lunch is our treat! Join us for an informal gathering for those who want to see who they are, what we believe, and what your Next Step might be. Whether you’re new to Shalimar UMC or you’ve been attending awhile.

Philip’s Focus Fasting to Feasting, Martin Luther, and Laity Weekend Thanksgiving and Christmas will be here soon. I would like to invite everyone on a journey from FASTING TO FEASTING the first 21 days of November. Why fast and pray? Are you seeking God’s wisdom in prayer to make a major decision in your life? Is your life “out of whack?” Are you looking to pray with extra depth on behalf of family members or friends? Our church? Our nation? Our world? If so, I would like to invite you on this special 21 day journey from FASTING TO FEASTING this November. This Sunday, October 22nd, we begin the first of two teaching sessions on Prayer and Fasting in the chapel at 1:00 pm. Dallas Gray will be partnering with me to teach some of the benefits of fasting from physical, spiritual, and Biblical perspectives. We will follow up on October 29 th with session two. These two weeks of teaching will help us prepare and select the kind of FAST we will practice for 21 days in November. (Fasting can be done in a variety of ways even beyond food and diet.) Basically we will be identifying a way to give up something to make more room for God. Our resource will be using the book Awakening by Stovall Weems for our 21 day journey. We invite you to join us for this journey from FASTING TO FEASTING. October 31st this year is a very special day. It will be the 500th anniversary of Protestantism. On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther nailed the 95 Theses on the door of All Saints Church in Wittenburgh in protest of the Pope selling indulgences. Luther never intended to form a new protestant movement but his action sparked the birth of Protestantism. As a result in the last 500 years, many protestant denominations have formed like the Methodist Church. There is relevance and significance of this date as part of our heritage and church history. This history of the Church prior to Martin Luther explains why we say “Holy Catholic Church” in our Apostles’ Creed. We have a heritage prior to the Reformation and after. In saying this we are both affirming our first 1500 years as being a part of the Catholic Church and our last 500 years as being Protestant. All of this Church history of course is part of the Church Universal and all who claim faith in Jesus Christ! continued

continued One of the big changes during the Protestant Reformation was the understanding of Luther of the “priesthood of all believers.” In our United Methodist Heritage, we celebrate this as ministry of both lay and clergy. In our church we have four clergy on staff and hundreds and potentially thousands of laity involved in ministry. Next weekend our laity will be leading our worship as part of Laity Weekend. Beth Russell, our Lay Leader, has written an article about this weekend. I hope you will read Beth’s thoughts about the ministry of the Laity. We are blessed to have so many take roles of speaking, leading worship, and service for this special weekend! Shalom, Philip Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor [email protected]

Laity Sunday Another exciting Laity Sunday is on the horizon! Plan to come out and support our wonderful lay speakers on Saturday and Sunday October 28 and 29 at all 5 services. Saturday night at the Break Free service, Teresa Smith will encourage us to “not be afraid” as she leads the service as our lay speaker. On Sunday at the 8:00 Traditions service we will be inspired to love Jesus even more as Linda McBroom shares her message. For the 9:30 Connect service our very own Kyle Wilson will lead us with the message on faith. At the 11:00 Traditions service Mr. Lee Orr will teach us about Paul and Paul’s journey. And at the 11:07 Freedom service Mr. Lee Jackson will complete our morning with his message as the lay speaker. Please be in prayer for all of the laity that will be participating in the services this weekend. I know that you will ALL be blessed during each service….maybe attend more than one service as each will be unique from the others. If you have questions please contact: Beth Russell at [email protected]

This Week’s Guide for Groups & Individuals How much do you think about the Lazarus story? In school, I remembered it because it has the shortest verse in the Bible "Jesus wept." For most of us, the story is about Jesus and Lazarus. Yes, it is about Jesus' love for his friend Lazarus, but the story is actually about Mary and Martha. In John 11:21-22 we read, "Martha said to Jesus, 'Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.'" Martha had incredible trust in Jesus. She knew and believed that he was the Messiah; she trusted that He could care for us in ways that no one else could. This week, we are looking at Jesus' teaching of "I am the way, the truth, and the life" and "I am the resurrection and the life." If we are going to live through Jesus, we must act like Jesus. He showed us the way through the ministry of his life. Things to Ponder: 1. How do you relate to this idea of “way” as referring to right living versus right belief? How does this understanding impact your interpretation of John 14:6?* 2. What do you think it meant for the disciples to make Jesus a way of life?* 3. Consider the difference between Lazarus and Jesus. Lazarus was brought back to this life; Jesus was brought back to a resurrected life. What is the difference between resuscitation and resurrection to you?+ 4. When have you experienced some kind of death in order for God to give you new life?+ Rob says that faith sometimes asks us to do things that don’t make sense. When has your faith caused you to do or say something that a nonbeliever might find hard to understand?++ *The God We Can Know, by Rob Fuquay. CHECK IT OUT !! NEW ON OUR SHELVES: The Case for God by Karen Armstrong is a thorough exploration of the part that religion plays in human life, drawing on the insights of the past in order to build a faith that speaks to the needs of our polarized age. Her examination of the diminished impulse toward religion in our times is compelling as are her offerings to help us live creatively, peacefully, and even joyously in today’s world. The Battle Plan for Prayer, inspired by the movie War Room (which we have on our DVD shelf), is designed to help anyone of any age to become a powerful person of prayer. Easily read, this book is “basic training” in developing prayer strategies with the end goal of discovering firsthand that nothing is beyond our Lord’s reach! One of the Faith’s most formidable defenders, Charles Colson, offers insights that will arm you with a distinct vision for living in today’s world with renewed optimism in his book, The Sky is Not Falling…Living Fearlessly in These Turbulent Times. Colson’s book is among his many others on our Charles Colson shelf. The other two books mentioned here will be on the library table for now. Come in and Check us Out!!!!!
