O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.

O ur Missi on REA C H, T EA C H, and S EN D We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Wors hi p S ervices B reak F re e Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00 pm in the Family Life Center. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory. T raditions At 8:00 and 11:00 am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00 service. Conn ect At 9:30 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre edom At 11:07 Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

All Saints Weekend All Saints Weekend will be celebrated here at SUMC on Nov. 3 and 4. This is when we recognize our members that have gone on before us this past year. For the next two weeks, you will find a form in your Worship Guide. Please complete this form to honor or remember loved ones with a contribution that will go to the Worship Celebrations Fund. Below are pictures of some of the purchases that have been made with these funds over the past year. You will see additional paraments, a processional cross, and Bible stand. In previous years, these funds have been used for other items that have included the matching easels that are used for funeral and memorial services as well as the commissioning of our outdoor nativity.

Don’t forget to set your clocks back Nov. 4th

Philip’s Focus This weekend we begin a series entitled Will You Grow? We are asking everyone to grow spiritually in the Lord as we move toward the New Year 2019. In preparation, each week leading up to Thanksgiving we will be teaching about one of these three words. WILL, YOU, and GROW. These three words each challenge us to take a fresh look at ourselves and grow in our walk with the Lord. The first word is WILL. There are at least two ways to understand WILL in this question. First, we have a WILL. Our COMMITMENT (WILL) is a deciding factor. There is a difference between I CAN grow (theoretical) and I WILL grow. The analogy I would use is simple. I can lose weight but will I? The losing of weight requires me to eat differently for the future. So knowing I CAN lose weight and losing weight are two different matters. The choice is mine. I must make a COMMITMENT to lose weight. Likewise, I CAN grow in generosity but WILL I grow? WILL I make different choices in the future so that I can grow? My WILL must be committed to grow! The second way to understand WILL is that God has a WILL for my life. My life is incomplete seeking my own will. When I am focused on myself, I am always lacking and there is never enough. When I am wrapped up in my own will I worry more and I see life through anxiety. My world view is likely one of scarcity, when I am dwelling on seeking my own will. In this perspective, I spend more time being anxious about what I do not have instead of my blessings. My life becomes complete as I seek God’s WILL and not my own. A better choice is seeking God’s Will for my life! It is amazing, when God comes first I focus more on the blessings I have and there always seems to be enough. My joy is more complete when I am focused on God’s WILL instead of my own. In seeking His Will I acknowledge, God knows best for my life and I find peace in His way. Finally, when my WILL (commitment) meets God’s WILL, my life becomes the very best possible. The best joy and fulfillment of life come together when my WILL meets GOD’s WILL. This is the best life possible. The Will You Grow series is seeking the best God life God is offering to us. We begin the journey this weekend! The question for all of us is, WILL YOU GROW? We begin today with a provocative question, Will I commit to commit? We CAN but WILL we? Let us all resolve to commit for 2019 to give to God through our church and grow in generosity! Imagine our church with everyone growing at the same time and God’s abundance overflowing through our congregation! Shalom, Philip Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor [email protected]

I wish to take this opportunity to thank my church family for the prayers, good wishes, and support during my recent surgery and recuperation period. What a true blessing everyone has been. A very special thank you to Ollie Fay Flint, Pat Brantley, Jon and Kathy Sheperd, Pat Strait, and Lynne Stefanik; all of whom gave not only of their precious time but their loving wishes and prayers to help speed my recovery. God's Blessings to all, Eleanor Arnold

I would like to thank the men who helped with grilling for the Holly Fair. Without your help, guys, it would not have been the success it was. Scott Youngblood, William Schenck, Ken Winzeler, John Patterson, Ray Huckabone, Bill Dubose, and Big Dave Dale. Thanks guys. Keith. E. Latimer

On behalf of Nell Pigg, the family would like to once again express their deepest gratitude for the love and support the Shalimar UMC community has shown both Jim and Nell for almost 40 years. In particular, the outreach to Mom in her last few weeks has been so affirming and heart warming. Mom’s Wednesday morning Bible study, Splash of Joy I, has especially been a basis for her faith and strength especially during her transition to Brookdale Fort Walton Beach and her remaining days there. Thank you again for all your love and prayers of peace and grace.

Employment Opportunity Church Family, Our incredible organist, Mary Jo Horner, has told me of her desire to retire. While I certainly want Mary Jo to remain as our organist, I understand her desire to set aside the week-by-week responsibilities that come from preparing and playing multiple services. Mary Jo has been playing the organ for over 60 years! She has played for Chapel services on military bases around the world. We have been privileged to have her as our organist since January 2008. Mary Jo and Chuck are not leaving Shalimar and will continue to be an active and vital part of our congregation. Mary Jo has told me that she wants to be the “first call” substitute for the next organist. Also, Mary Jo will continue as our organist until we find our next one. She also has graciously agreed to serve on the selection committee as we seek the new organist. We plan to begin advertising for the organist position this next week. You will see that advertisement post this next week when the Beacon is updated. With that, if you have anyone who would be interested in applying, please ask them to contact me. Once we have secured the next organist, we will honor Mary Jo and celebrate her years of service here at SUMC as well as her career as a church organist. Please join me in expressing our gratitude for Mary Jo’s many years of service to God’s Kingdom and how that service has had such a wonderful impact on our ministries here at Shalimar! Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow!
