Laity Weekend

The Beacon October 28 & 29, 2017

Welcome to Shalimar UMC We are so glad you’ve chosen to worship with us this week! Hearing assistance devices are available for the Sanctuary. Please see an usher to obtain these aids. Enjoy fellowship, coffee, and snacks in the Family Life Center Gym between worship services.

O ur Visio n Christ-centered, multigenerational, family and community relevant ministries through worship, discipleship, and mission.

O ur Missi on REA C H, T EA C H, and S EN D We REACH out to our congregation, community, and the world to TEACH the word of God as provided in the Holy Scripture, and SEND our members and missionaries to be witnesses to God’s grace and His promise of eternal life to us through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Wors hi p S ervices B reak Fre e Our Saturday evening service begins at 6:00 pm in the Family Life Center opening with a gathering and fellowship time at 5:30 pm. This transformational service involves modern music, multimedia, and a style of preaching that is practical and participatory. T raditions At 8:00 and 11:00 am Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we celebrate through the rich traditions of our faith such as hymns led by organ and piano, seasonal vestments, and traditional Methodist liturgy. Our Chancel Choir leads the 11:00 service. Conn ect At 9:30 Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary we engage in a four-fold service of gathering praise, service of the Word, Holy Communion with candle stations for prayer, and sending forth. The music is a blend of contemporary praise songs and upbeat hymns. Fre edom At 11:07 Sunday mornings in the Family Life Center Gym we worship through modern music, multimedia, and a teaching style message in a non-traditional atmosphere. We come to God as we are to experience the freedom of not having to stay that way.

Philip’s Focus Never Underestimate the Value of One Member Every member of Shalimar United Methodist Church has value! Value to God! Value to others! Membership in the church is both a commitment and an opportunity. When we joined the church we were asked to commit our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. Many years ago I read this little rhyme entitled “The Value of One Member.” “Ten little members standing in a line. One disliked the minister, then there were nine. Nine ambitious members offered to work late. One forgot her promise, then there were eight. Eight creative members had ideas good as heaven. One lost enthusiasm, then there were seven. Seven loyal members got into a fix. They quarreled over projects, then there were six. Six members remained with spirit and drive. One moved away, then there were five. Five steadfast members wished there were more. One became indifferent, then there were four. Four cheerful members who never disagree, Til one complained of meetings, then there were three. Three eager members! What did they do? One got discouraged, then there were two. Two lonely members, our rhyme is nearly done. One joined a sports team, then there was only one. One faithful member was feeling rather blue, met with a neighbor, and then there were two. Two earnest members each enrolled one more, doubling their number, then there were four. Four determined members, just couldn't wait, Til each one won another, then there were eight. continued

continued Eight excited members signed up eight more. In another six verses, there'll be a thousand twenty-four.” (First read in Rotarian Magazine from the 1980’s) When we joined the Shalimar United Methodist Church we offered our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. Imagine the value of one member at Shalimar. Well? How are we using our membership? Are we praying for our church? Are we present each week? Are we giving? Are we serving? Have we a witness to invite others? Shalimar has over 2800 members. Imagine what we could do if all of us enlisted one member! Shalom, Philip Dr. Philip McVay, Lead Pastor [email protected]

This Week’s Guide for Groups & Individuals Laity in the Methodist Movement This weekend, as we celebrate laity weekend, I wanted to take a moment and share how vital laity have been to the Methodist movement. In the early days of Methodism in America, preachers were given a circuit. For this reason, many times they were called circuit riders. From 1773 to 1790, the population in America multiplied as did the circuit system of American Methodism. “Most circuit-riding preachers offered the only religious services available” to many of the people they served. 1 These circuit riders often served an area that encompassed anywhere from 200 to 500 miles. Elijah Woolsey’s circuit took nearly nine weeks to travel. His route was almost 800 miles in the Albany, New York area. The local congregation was dependent upon the class leaders. Each church was organized with classes (small groups), bands (accountability groups), and societies (worship services). The class leader served as a lay pastor. He or she would step in for the circuit rider when he was gone on his circuit. The class leader would visit new families, the sick, and other class members. He or she was also responsible for helping make sure a class member didn’t slip away from the society. Dr. Kenneth Kinghorn describes the American movement’s balance when he writes, “As American Methodism grew, it produces an army of circuit riders and lay preachers. These Christian workers labored sacrificially in their efforts to take the gospel to every soul in the land.”3 Today, our laypersons in the church are still just as important. Although most of our churches have a resident pastor, we still have the itinerancy system. The role of the laity helps ensure the church’s work continues when God moves a pastor to a new place. God has called us all to do the work of creating disciples. We as Methodists work together, clergy and laity, to fulfill this mission. 1

CHECK IT OUT When the back cover of a book called The Heavenly Man says that “you may begin reading (this book) on your couch, but will finish it on your knees,” one is compelled to at least check it out! This intensely dramatic biography of a young, half-starved Chinese boy in a poor village and of how God uses him mightily to preach the gospel throughout the world is several notches above “inspiring.” It’s new to our Biography shelves where you’ll find many other inspirational stories of real-life people living as Christians throughout the world. Go ahead...be inspired...check out books about others trying to make a difference in our world!

Prayer Room The Prayer Room is always available for your use. The code to enter is 4125. On Sunday mornings, after every service, someone will be in the Prayer Room to pray with you, if you would like. They will not bother you if you would like time to yourself. There are prayer shawls available for your use as well. A Prayer Box and Prayer Cards are available for you to leave a prayer request for the Pastors and/or Prayer Team to pray for you or a situation you would like lifted up. There have been great reports of use for this special place.
