Welcome

to the October 2012 edition of BFS News Welcome to the new format of our newsletter. We hope you enjoy reading it as much as our team enjoyed putting it together. We tried to make it interesting and informative and would love to hear your feedback and suggestions, please email us at [email protected].

I

n this edition of our Goodnews story, Vic/ Tas Relationship Manager Jeremy Peet talks to Sharon Davey-Sypkes, Operations Manager of C3 Church Hobart, about their new worship centre.

church, sitting in the cafe or browsing the store, offices, board room, and a second auditorium for 150 people.

JP: Sharon, you recently moved to this fantastic new site. What was wrong with your former premises?

SD: Since we moved in last year we have seen fantastic growth. Much of this growth is attributed to the excitement of the new building, in that our members found a fresh and new energy to invite their friends “to come and see the new building” and then once people came to see it, the word started spreading. Our building is also available

SD: We used to own and worship in the former Odeon Theatre in CBD Hobart. The main theatre area was great but we didn’t have any places to do anything else, and the parking was a nightmare! JP: This place is not that much further away. SD: But here we have 7 acres, including what was a 3000m2 warehouse, which we have redeveloped in a way that meets the needs of our church both now and also for the future. Located in South Hobart which is only 5 minutes from the centre of the City, our property is surrounded on all sides by beautiful cliffs, bush land and the iconic Hobart Rivulet which people walk along every day. JP: It doesn’t look like an old warehouse.

Graeme Mitchell Chief Executive Officer

JP: How have you seen God’s blessing through the project?

SD: Our facilities include a main auditorium with a capacity of 800, six age specific kids rooms that all open out onto a fenced playground, a large atrium (foyer) area with polished concrete floors for mingling after

they are quite amazed at the quality and uniqueness, and spread the word around our city for external hire and we have been quite surprised by the amount of interest shown in this already. Again, as people come and see it for the first time, they are quite amazed at the quality and uniqueness, and spread the word around our city. In fact most people you talk to in Hobart have heard about it within 6 months. The cafe is also open to the public continued next page

We offer a range of products and services for Churches, Individuals and Christian Organisations • Savings and cheque accounts • Online savings accounts • Internet account access and BPAY • Term investments • BFS EFTPOS Prepaid Card • Church services including electronic giving ABN 56 002 861 789 | AFSL 311062

GoodNews story

C3 Church Hobart continued from page 1 during the week mainly marketed to mums to run play groups and meet for coffee while the kids can safely play on the playground. This is bringing in hundreds of people that we would have no access to otherwise. JP: It’s great to see both your congregation and the community are benefitting from it. SD: Overall, the new building has, and continues to, transform our church, and all the blood, sweat and tears over the design and building phase were all worth it. We would highly recommend to any of our Church’s to approach BFS first as they really understand churches and they don’t have the same issues that banks have (such as being funded by people’s giving). JP: It’s a privilege to help and to see the growing ministry occurring at this great new place. Thanks Sharon.

Long Service Award

On 28 September 2012 Mr David Evans celebrated 20 years’ service as a Director of BFS, including 8 of those years as Chairman. David is also a member of the NSW West Ryde Baptist Church and Chairman of the Baptist Churches of NSW Property Trust. In his spare time he works in the office at Right to Life Association, is a member of the Welsh choir and a Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages at his local church. David brings his skills and experience of 34 years with the National Australia Bank to the Board in his ministry with BFS. BFS Directors pay tribute and gave thanks for David’s significant and ongoing service – a milestone as the longest ever serving Director of BFS.

BFS listens to you and we thank you for all of your support! Helping Ministries

Something Special

“We have recently gone through a significant redevelopment of our Church as the needs for our growing congregation have changed. BFS have supported us as they understand the unique challenges that Churches face. I have found them to be incredibly helpful and personal in their approach. BFS have been far more than a financial institution, they have partnered with us in Ministry”.

“As a businessman I often dream of and pray for business to be kinder, more gracious, even thoughtful, you know ‘business by the Book’. Sometimes I meet those businesses but I have seldom met a financial institution like that. BFS is caring organisation in a world where you thought that was probably impossible. This is a great encouragement. It can be done! You can ring them, ask for money and get it! You can do something wrong and they will notice, contact you and try to fix it up! Graciously. Not with threats to close your account or shop, but with thoughtful solutions. There should be more groups like this, and maybe via this example, others will follow. Keep up the great work BFS!”

Pastor Mark Edwards, Inglewood Community Church – WA

Great Service “At Georges River, we appreciate the fact that the staff at BFS respond so quickly and helpfully to our requests. It is like having our own personal customer service representative there to manage our requirements and needs”. Rod Wolf, Executive Pastor, Georges River Community Baptist Church – NSW

But Wait! There’s more!

“I am the Treasurer at West Preston Baptist Church. I’m writing this because I would like to encourage churches to consider BFS for their church’s transactional service’s needs… by using BFS, any profits made are going to the Baptist fraternity rather than another commercial institution”.

Kyle Moyle, Director, Emission Reduction Company - SA

Tony Williams, West Preston Baptist Church – Vic

we appreciate the fact that the staff at BFS respond so quickly and helpfully to our requests.

What is iGive?

System Upgrade

A new BFS service to encourage regular electronic offerings to support your Church’s ministry

BFS is busy at present preparing for an upgrade to the latest version of our financial services software, Ultracs 4. Our software provider, Ultradata Australia says:

With iGive your church can: • Receive credit card or direct debit offerings without cost • Ensure the receipt of 100 cents in the dollar of offerings contributed • Continue to receive regular offerings, even when givers are away • Reduce risk and save time for church officers handling less cash • Simplify account reconciliation for the Treasurer • Provide anonymity and confidentiality to givers • Provide a reusable ‘Symbolic Offering Card’ for givers to place in the offering

What do churches need to do? • Go to our website – Churches & Ministries – iGive Church Offerings – to download the application form to participate • Complete and send to BFS • Receive your iGive pack • Introduce your congregation to iGive

”Ultracs 4 offers the most advanced and complete system in the financial services software marketplace. Ultradata’s solution is designed to meet operational requirements of full service financial institutions, by helping to enhance levels of client service, while at the same time assist in addressing existing legislation and government mandates.”

A New Service for Exempt Fringe Benefits In September BFS received notification from the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) of their approval of a specific Class Ruling for a new BFS product known as BFS Visa Prepaid PayCard. This card is for use by religious practitioners and employees of Public Benevolent Institutions who receive part of their salary as exempt fringe benefits. The Class Ruling, which confirms that the BFS Visa Prepaid PayCard meets ATO requirements

for tax exempt fringe benefits, will be effective following publications in the Government Gazette. The Card is a reloadable Visa prepaid card allowing purchases and payments to be made wherever Visa prepaid cards are accepted (e.g. eftpos and online) except that cash cannot be withdrawn. Churches and Pastors will be notified through their state Baptist Union when this service is available later this year.
