Publisher’s note: This issue of UNWIND closes out a terrific year for our magazine, and also ushers in a new winter season here in the Florida Keys. Just in time for the season, we give you the Home and Design issue of UNWIND, which is bound to trigger decorating ideas in both full and part-time residents. It’s no coincidence this lifestyle theme is publishing in October. This is the time of year when many households start sprucing up their homes for the holidays or begin planning spring projects. In the pages that follow, we feature Chef Michael Ledwith as he shares how virtually any home cook can mimic his extraordinary culinary style with simple yet elegant ingredients. We’re also providing Tropical Design tips and direction, and how to blend decorative treatments with our unique environment. We’ll take another 10-mile jaunt through the Keys in our regular “Keys Crawl” feature. Finally we’ll look at the history and rich tradition of tiki huts and provide stunning photography that depicts classic “Rooms with a View”. As always, we hope you enjoy UNWIND and our commitment to exceptional lifestyle content. UNWIND allows us to take our readers where no other publication goes and we hope you always enjoy that ride. If you have feedback, photos or ideas for future issues, please send them to: [email protected]

unwind | October 2014

WRITTEN BY Jana Vandelaar

In the past two issues of unwind, we have exposed all types of finds along the Florida Keys, 10 miles at a time. This crawl installment is for anyone who’s ever pulled over at a funky Keys store to ask for directions but instead ended up tweeting gooey, happy ice cream pictures about that accidental find forever. Follow along to find some surprises, covering mile markers 90 to 80.

88 - M.E.A.T.

86.7 - Rain Barrel

Here’s something you’d never expect to hear: “Let’s go to a small strip mall (Strike 1) in the Florida Keys, but nowhere near the water (Strike 2) and grab a burger (Strike 3).” The folks at the M.E.A.T. Eatery & Tap Room are not 8 only pulling people off the 8 water but converting even diehard seafood lovers into meat eaters. The meat is so tasty, one guest went there four times in the three days he stayed in the Keys just to taste as many menu items as possible. Don’t miss the Inside Out Juicy Lucy Burger with Duck Fat Fried French Fries or the Truffled Bistro Fries. Don't overlook the homemade sauces either!

Although we like to point out hidden gems, it’s hard to miss the ginormous lobster in front of the Rain Barrel Artisan Village. Her name is Betsy and everyone stops to snap a wellangled selfie or groupie under what might be the world’s 8 7 biggest faux lobster at 30 feet high and 40 feet long. In the shops behind her, you’ll discover museum-quality artwork, gorgeous pottery, sparkly jewelry, crazy mailboxes and more, all in a relaxed, open atmosphere – you sort of feel like you’re walking through a treehouse on the ground. Even bored significant others and wiggly little ones enjoy the variety. It also has a tiny but yummy shack called the Lost Lobster tucked

into the trees, which serves a lobster roll thick with the sweet meat.

85.3 - Hog Heaven Although it’s tacky and even a little wild, the Hog Heaven Sports Bar & Grill is one of the go-to places to party after hours. Its website states: “Food is served daily from 11 a.m. – 3:30 a.m. and the party goes on until 4 a.m.” 8 Hog Heaven leans toward 5 anyone who looks better in less lighting and with more beer. Also, anyone who enjoys live music, 17 televisions and a place to dock the boat. Actually, all ages enjoy cool restaurants with an airplane sticking out of the side of the building. The menu has a cartoon mentality with funny food and drink names like Hog Balls and Hog-o-ritas. It even has a “Little Piglets” section for children.

84.5 - OceanView Sports Pub Why do so many greats settle in the Florida Keys? Stop by the OceanView Inn & Sports Pub (or as the locals call

it, the OV) and ask former Pittsburgh Steelers two-time Super Bowl winner Gary Dunn yourself. He and fellow former NFL player Dennis Harrah (Rams, then in Los Angeles) bought the OV in 1996 8 4 and made it into the locals' quintessential best-kept secret in the Keys. This is the Super Bowl of casual hotels and restaurants (try the Dunnie burger or the BBBLT — Bacon, Bacon, BACON!) Accessible by car or boat, guests can enjoy a cocktail in the pool or by the fire pit, and watch games on one of the many televisions strategically placed around inside and outside bars. Everything about this place feels like a Sunday afternoon spent watching games with close friends and family.

82.9 - History of Diving Museum Wouldn’t the opposite of a fish out of water be a human underwater? The History of 8 Diving Museum documents 3 man’s incredible journey into

the mysterious underwater world and the wealth of knowledge (OK, and sunken treasure) gained from the brave divers who first ventured into this new world. Visitors see everything from lifesized models of primitive divers who used sacks of rocks for weights while walking on the sea bottom to a room full of what looks like futuristic robotic suits, one of which is called Iron Mike built in the 1930s to dive at depths beyond 500 feet. Treasure chests, antique diving toys and tools, octopus tentacles – nothing is missed in this museum. It’s a must for divers and even for landlubbers who prefer to be dry while they explore underwater.

82.6 - Sub Zero Ice Cream It’s a huge deal when a new business opens in the Florida Keys, but even more so when it’s a franchise operation because 8 locals are resistant toward 2 commercialization here. But places like Sub Zero Ice Cream & Yogurt manage to thaw even the coldest critics.

81.9 - Hooked on Books Everyone knows the best way to fully experience a new destination is by meeting the locals. Hooked on Books was not only created and operated by locals, but 8 it features local authors 2 and subjects ranging from cookbooks to fictional and historical stories of the Florida Keys. Best-sellers are enjoyed on the comfy couch next to the children’s corner. It’s a good oldfashioned bookstore with the bones to endure the commercial coffee joints. Stop in and remember why books are so special.

81.6 - Bob's Bunz

PASTA'S ART-APUS Meet great artists and sample food on Morada Way at every Third Thursday ArtWalk. GELATO GRINS Forget Paris and instead visit Bitton Bistro Cafe’ for pastries, crepes, cafe’ au lait & homemade gelato.

BEAUTIFUL BUNZ Fantasy wedding cakes and succulent cinnamon buns abound at Bob’s Bunz/Islamorada Restaurant and Bakery.

As you watch, your Sub Zero employee virtually disappears behind a powerful mist of nitrogen used to flash-freeze rich creams into your personalized flavor fantasy. It’s like an ice cream magic trick. Be prepared to be mystified and addicted.

82.2 - Bitton Bistro Café Typically you never trust a skinny chef but this rule should be ignored at the Bitton Bistro Café. It seems impossible the slender chef/proprietor, Michel Bitton, can create masterpieces like the Croque Mitin (a fancy grilled ham and 8 cheese sandwich made with 2 smooth Gruyere and served on a croissant). Kids are forever begging their parents to take them there for the choco crepe made with nutella, but really, everything in this restaurant is simply magnifique. If you’d rather stick with a seafood theme since you’re in the Keys, try the Ocean Side crepe with smoked salmon, goat cheese, chives and capers. Before you bid adieu, don’t forget to try some homemade gelato with a cup of rich café au lait. Ooooo la la.

82 - NautiLimo Imagine yourself sitting outside at the Lorelei Restaurant & Cabana Bar, 18

unwind | October 2014

enjoying the sunset and a few drinks when you see a pink limousine drive by – on the water. Obviously you should put down that last martini, 8 2 right? Wrong. Instead, order another drink and find up to six passengers to cruise around the Florida Keys bay on the NautiLimo. A limo ride is always fun but riding in the NautiLimo is unforgettable.

82 - Morada Way ArtWalk Let’s face it: Fridays get all of the attention and Thursdays usually get ignored. But now, every third Thursday is hopping with music, food, drink and incredible art during the Third Thursday ArtWalk 8 on Morada Way. 2 As you stroll the half mile, all five of your senses spring to life – including your taste buds because popular restaurants like the Green Turtle Inn, Chef Michael's, Kaiyo & MA’s Fish Camp have surprises prepared for this special one night of the month. The artwork within the Redbone Gallery, Gallery Morada and the Signature Gallery blend in perfectly with the live music. Meeting some of the artists in person, such as the brilliant Pasta Pantaleo, tops the evening.

Call me crazy, but if my future wife said she was hitting Bob’s Bunz to pick out a wedding cake, I’d be wary. 8 But Bob’s Bunz/Islamorada 1 Restaurant and Bakery is so

well-known, brides-to-be regularly turn to Bob’s for a personalized cake. It’s hard to decide whether the food or the service is better. It’s also hard to decide whether to order a meal or skip it and go straight for their signature “Bunz.” Play it safe – order both and enjoy this secret favorite of the locals.

81.6 - Morada Bay Full Moon Party Annette and Frankie would have been impressed with Morada Bay’s full-moon party. The tropical atmosphere 8 mixed with Key West 1 party vibes and a splash of tasteful indulgence blend perfectly together to exceed anyone’s beach party expectations. Keep it casual and BYOBB (Bring Your Own Beach Blanket) while enjoying the music, bonfires and breathtaking views. For a luxurious evening, book a dinner at Pierre’s and don’t forget to try one of

KEYS EXOTICA Spectacular grounds and Pierre’s, a world class restaurant, can be found at Morada Bay.

FIREDANCE Morada Bay’s Full Moon Party keeps sparks flying during their monthly beach party.

Chef Michael embraces Keys culinary fare

WRITTEN BY Raquel Garcia It's not often a hurricane can be credited for bringing good tidings to a community. But because of 1989's Hurricane Hugo, which brushed off Florida after slamming the U.S. Virgin Islands, Islamorada witnessed the arrival of Chef Michael Ledwith, and now enjoys a nearly 20-year tradition of dining excellence where peace, love and hogfish rule with Chef Michael's at mile marker 81.6. The New York native began his career as a busboy at a friend's restaurant in Staten Island and apprenticed in fine Italian kitchens in the northeast before fine-tuning his craft in the Caribbean. After fleeing St. Thomas in Hugo’s aftermath, he landed in the Keys, where he has always maintained that keeping it simple is all it takes to create five-star restaurant cuisine at home. products today. Polyester microfiber, too, has become an integral part of functional, easy tropical living. "It looks like micro-suede but it cleans with soap and water and is fade-resistant," Elwell says. "It has longevity, looks great, and is more comfortable than traditional fabrics." Distressed, or so-called heirloom wood, goes very well with these durable tropical fabrics, combining longevity with a perfect transitional accent. For the more budget-conscious, bamboo and seagrass provide a light, airy island feel. Made from woven tree bark, seagrass is widely popular in the Keys. Coupled with bamboo edges or legs, it lends a classical tropical look that is modern while conjuring the ambiance of an elegant 19th Century South Pacific plantation home. According to Elwell, 70 percent or more of his clientele rents its houses out part of the year. This is a major consideration when choosing home furnishings, he says, as are grandchildren and pets, which can always be tough on furnishings. Microfibers and distressed wood hold up well under this type of duress. For residents who don't worry as much about wear and tear and are willing to spend a little more, leather is a delicious choice for a tropical living space. "It breathes and stays at room temperature," Elwell says. Leather is available in yummy colors like purple, lime green and coral, along with the popular standbys like blue and aqua. Elwell suggests being playful with color. For instance, a lime-green leather couch topped with purple

Wall color and window treatments are a vital component to enhancing the tropical feel of your home. According to interior designer Liz Samess of Liz Samess Interiors, LLC in Marathon, watery spa-like and sea glass inspired colors – calming blues or watery greens and grays – can be used for an entire wall or for accent walls. These colors, complimented with crisp white trim, will act as neutral canvas behind just about any furniture style or color. Samess says the bedroom is an ideal place to play with fabric patterns. She notes that custom fabrics, especially when it comes to bedding, lend elegance to a simple design. This is a great opportunity to add a modern touch to a transitional room by laying out a mosaic of texture and color with bedding and pillows. THE GREAT LABOR DAY HURRICANE OF 1935

REACHING NEW HEIGHTS The massive tiki structure at Aquarium Encounters in Marathon took months to construct.

When the eye of the Labor Day Hurricane passed over Lower Matecumbe in 1935, it brought a fury of wind and water unlike anything that has, to this day, ever struck North America. This exhibit will include a collection of more than 80 images that not only capture the Upper Keys before the storm, but also the extraordinary aftermath.

Verrier’s crews have built tiki structures all over the world, including thatched office buildings, hotels, and a series of tiki structures for celebrity magician David Copperfield on his private Bahamian island. Forty percent of Verrier’s contracts come from the Keys. Cheeca Lodge, Rum Runners Bar at the Postcard Inn in Islamorada and the Island Fish Co. in Marathon are among his clients. For a mere $3,000, a tiki hut can be yours in a matter of two or three days if you keep it simple – that is, a 12-by15-foot frame hut. That price climbs, of course, if you’re looking to install a wet bar or kitchen. “A lot of people spend most of their free time in their tiki huts,” says Verrier, “and want to bring all the conveniences of home into it.”
