From the Top...

President’s Message

As I come through our first cold weekend of the coming season, I’m reminded that we are entering the last part of 2014. For me the signs of fall are coming early, leaves are starting to change and I saw a report of record early snowfall in North Dakota. As business owners we often become so busy with our daily fires and achieving our yearly goals that we don’t take time to collect and record the history of our business. Some of the most important documents I have of my family are the written histories of both my Father and Grandfather. These are not great novels that rival Hemingway, but they are important records of the development of their business as well as a very interesting glimpse into how people did business and felt about their times. My Grandfather’s history starts back before 1919 and my Father’s starts with his experiences in World War 2. These writing cover the depression, war, expansions, business moves, problems and successes.

and won our success is an important business record. My other Grandfather ran a warehouse business in Chicago; he made a scrap book of images showing the warehouse and it operation with small notes under each picture. The pictures showed ships on the Chicago river, offloading boxes of goods and how they were stored in the warehouse. I always see something new and different when I look at these images, and this is of a business model that has changed drastically over the years.

This process may see daunting, but this record can start simply by collecting current and past images of your business, employees and clients. Write small notes on the back of the images that tell you the importance of the image. Remember, things that seem mundane and ordinary today may have great interest in the future. Documenting business milestones not only can be effective marking but also be used for your history collection. In time historical images of your business can be uses to create a conversation with your clients to show your capabilities and how your business has grown. Historical images always seem to attract attention. Your advertising and press releases can be a good place to start your history, but just like the “behind the scenes” photos and video that are popular on TV and social media, your history will also benefit from your “behind the scenes” knowledge. It’s this knowledge that makes the history worth reading.

Your history can start today with small steps that will add up, over time, to make a history worth reading and priceless to future generations. Help make some history with the Chamber. We have a number of upcoming events like the Community Expo held a Carl Sandburg High School on October 18th. The application is available on our website or by contacting the Chamber office.

Writings like these do take commitment and effort, but the importance for future generations is immeasurable. To help others understand the times we live in and how we dealt with struggles

The Village Board recently looked at the village’s sign ordinance with some businesses having to soon replace signs. We greatly appreciated Chamber President Rob Wehmeier and the other business owners attending the Village Board meeting to offer their input. The Village Board voted to keep the ordinance as it is because of the appearance and image considerations. The Village of Orland Park is committed to helping all local businesses be successful. We believe that providing a safe community with the necessary road improvements will enable more people to visit our local businesses more quickly, easily and safely while simultaneously maintaining the high quality image for which Orland Park is known. Congratulations to Consolidated High School District 230 for all three of its high schools being named among America’s best by The Daily

ambulatory outpatient health care facility planned for Downtown Orland Park.

Thank you again to all of the chamber members who helped to make the village’s summer calendar possible. Sponsorships are key for offering exceptional community events and Orland Park’s business community never disappoints. Our thanks also go to the chamber members who sponsored the village’s Open Lands Golf Outing in September. This event raises funds to save open space in the village and it’s been great to have many of you be a part of it. Speaking of Open Lands, it was with beaming pride that the Stellwagen Family Farm Foundation held its first public events last month. The Stellwagen Farm, at 177th Street and 108th Avenue, is one of the family farms that the Open Lands Commission saved. Watch for more events at the farm along with volunteer opportunities. The village was very pleased when the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board on August 27 unanimously approved the University of Chicago Medicine’s new

The project will include a pharmacy and a 580-space parking structure that the village will be able to use free of charge after hours and on weekends, making it even more convenient for visitors to park their cars and explore the restaurants and shops in the area. The building is expected to employ more than 100 people and create more than 200 construction jobs. The project will bring $61 million in private investment and 22,400 annual visitors/patients to Downtown Orland Park and nearby businesses. IDOT’s LaGrange Road Widening Project continues and the contractors try very hard to minimize inconveniences for LaGrange Road businesses and their patrons. The project includes adding through lanes; intersection improvements including additional turn lanes at key intersections; improved bicycle and pedestrian services; improved roadway alignment and enhancements. When it is done, it will be a magnificent gateway to all that Orland Park offers. Daniel J. McLaughlin, Mayor Village of Orland Park

Resource Corner WhereTo Locate Your Business 1. You may need to maintain a physical presence near your customers. But that still doesn’t mean you need to have all your business where your customers are. 2. You can now have a ‘virtual’ office, with a postal address, receptionist and physical presence close to your customers, but keep your main base somewhere more costeffective and service those customers remotely. ‘Virtuality’ means you can locate your business in many different places

Learn How to Safely Cozy Up to Your Outside Fire Pit

According to the National Association of Realtors, outdoor fire pits are one of the new, hot trends to lure home buyers to purchase property. However, before you gather your family and friends around these stylish campfires, be sure to learn how to safely prepare your fire to avoid any injuries. “Since fire pit-use is much more common around this time of year as the night temperatures begin to cool down, there is a higher concentration of fire-related injuries,” explains Dr. Heather

Taras, emergency medicine physician at the Silver Cross Emergency Care Center in Homer Glen. “People need to be mindful that they must take precautions when entertaining around a fire pit in order to avoid any accidents.” “The upper body is where most fire pit-related injuries occur,” says Dr. Taras. “The arms, hands, fingers, and face are most frequently injured.” Follow these tips to ensure you and your guests enjoy your fire pit safely!

3. Find the ideal location Position your fire pit on a level concrete or stone surface that’s at least 10 feet from your house, trees, and anything flammable. Unless the owner’s manual says its okay, don’t put the pit on a grassy surface, wood deck, or enclosed area, as fumes from it can be harmful without proper ventilation. 4. Utilize good fuel Be sure to always burn dry wood that was cut at least six months earlier. Also to keep sparks from flying, make sure logs are no longer than three-quarters of the fire pit’s diameter, so burning pellets don’t spill out.

2. Become familiar with how to operate the fire pit

Recycle your unwanted electronics and shred your paper documents at our semi-annual Shred-A-Thon, happening from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Nov. 8 at the Highway Department, 16125 S. Wolf Rd. Join us Thursday, Oct. 9 from 5 to 10 p.m. for the third annual Dancing with the Senior Stars. Enjoy a night

5. Safely ignite the flames Before lighting an outdoor fire, check the weather forecast. Avoid windy conditions that can blow embers and use screens for protection from wind to prevent sparks from flying out. Then start your fire small, and only use the recommended fire starters like dry wood. Never use lighter fluid, gasoline, or kerosene to light a fire. 6. Keep children away from flames Never leave the fire unattended. Children should not be allowed near fire pits which should be adultsupervised at all times. 7. Have a plan to snuff out the fire Use safety gloves when handling a hot fire pit. Keep a bucket of sand, a fire extinguisher, or a garden water hose nearby in case the fire gets too hot to handle.

“News” From Orland Township

Here’s a look at what’s happening at Orland Township this fall:

Submitted by Traci Simon, Silver Cross Hospital

Read the manual that comes with your fire pit and follow the instructions. Call the manufacturer if you have any questions.

1. Brush up on Local Ordinances Before buying your fire pit, make sure you understand your city or county’s regulations regarding using them in your back yard. Some cities prohibit fire pit use completely and large fines may be imposed if you don’t follow the law.

train them. There are many local and regional schemes that offer financial aid to attract start-ups – often they’re in depressed areas where wages are low in the first place. And in some countries, lower local income tax rates make it very attractive to start up in particular locations. One of the reasons why so many tech businesses set up in Seattle is because individual income tax is zero in Washington State.

Orland Township’s annual Make a Difference Day is Saturday, October 25. On this day, Orland Township will collect and donate food, clothes and supplies for the residents of the Manteno Veterans Home. For details, visit our website.

With winter right around the corner, our Holiday 2014 Program will be in full swing. Starting in November, the Township will be collecting non-perishable food items, new clothes and toys, gift cards and monetary donations
