Elect Your New Chamber Leaders All Chamber members will receive a ballot to elect new directors to the Chamber Board this month. Members vote to elect 7 new board members each year, and they each serve a three-year term. A nominating committee assigned by the Chairman of the Board developed the following list of candidates. Members have the option to write-in candidates on the ballot, if they choose. Nominees for the 2016 election include: Darren Huckert Jones|Carter - Site Development Department Manager Darren graduated from Texas A&M where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering in 2003. After graduating, he took a job with Bury and Partners in Austin and focused on commercial retail development. He is currently a Professional Engineer with Jones|Carter and oversees the College Station office’s Site Development Department. He’s a LEED AP with the U.S. Green Building Council and a past board member of Washington County YPO. He is also a graduate of Leadership Washington County, Class of 2014. Darren and his wife, Brooke, have three daughters and
a new baby boy. They attend St. John’s Lutheran Church of Prairie Hill, where his wife’s family has gone for three generations. Edna Kennedy, Ed. D. Burton Independent School District - Superintendent Dr. Edna Kennedy was raised in Goldthwaite. She received her Bachelor’s in Elementary Education, minor in Psychology, and Special Education Endorsement from Tarleton State University in Stephenville. She earned her Master’s in Counseling Psychology from Angelo State University. Her Doctorate was conferred from the first Educational Leadership doctoral cohort program at Tarleton State. Dr. Kennedy has been in education for 34 years, 12 as a teacher followed by administrative leadership positions. She was a Superintendent for 11 years before coming to Burton ISD in February 2015. Her husband, David is also a Superintendent in Westhoff ISD. They are blessed with 6 grown children, their spouses and 10 grandchildren. They enjoy spending time with family, working cattle, and showing/raising/hunting Treeing Walker CoonHounds. LEADERS continued on A3

Jim E. Kruse Bank of Brenham – President Jim was born in Brenham, earned the rank of Eagle Scout, and graduated from Brenham HS in 1988. He graduated as valedictorian of Blinn College in 1990, earned a BBA in Accounting from Texas A&M in 1992, and is a Certified Public Accountant. He began work with KPMG Peat Marwick in Houston. Three years later he accepted a position as Controller at Blue Bell Creameries. Additionally, he took on the role of V.P. of Information Technology. After 20 years at Blue Bell, Jim accepted the position of VP-Financial Planning & Analysis of Industry Bancshares. He then became the EVP-Investments and Business Development at Bank of Brenham and recently became its President. Jim is married to Hailey and they have four children and are members of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church. Jim serves on the following boards: Bank of Brenham, Industry Bancshares, 1st National Bank of Bellville, Blue Bell Creameries, Baylor Scott & White in Temple and Brenham. He is also a graduate of Leadership Washington County, Class of 2007. Lloyd C. Powell Brenham Police Department - Administrative Captain Lloyd was raised in Brenham, attended Brenham High School and graduated in 1992. He went to Grambling State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice. He began working at the Brenham Police Dept. in 1997 as a dispatcher. Over the last 20 years, Lloyd has worked in a variety of capacities. In 2003, he was promoted to Detective. He worked multiple high profile cases and had a case featured on America’s Most Wanted. In 2012, Lloyd was promoted to Sergeant and worked in the patrol division. In 2015, Lloyd was promoted to Captain and is currently the Administrative Captain at the police dept. He is very active in the community and loves to do speaking engagements to promote positive community relations with law enforcement. Lloyd is a for-
mer member of the Washington County Rotary club and a graduate of Leadership Washington County, Class of 2012. Edward Smith III The Citadel, 291 Ice House, Ninety Six West - Chief Visionary Born in Houston, Edward moved to Brenham in 1980 and completed high school at the Marine Military Academy in Harlingen. He went to Southwest Texas State and received a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. After working as a writer in the advertising field and racing road bikes for a couple teams, he moved to Colorado in 1999 to pursue a lifestyle change. Landing in Colorado Springs, where he still maintains a residence, Edward utilized his marketing and real estate background in the title insurance industry while also guiding upland bird hunting and fly fishing. In 2013, family drew him back to Washington County where he reopened The Citadel, as well as opening 291 Ice House in downtown Chappell Hill. Another partnership was formed with a like-minded soul last year and Ninety Six West was born, his new main focus. Amanda Stolz Seidel Schroeder - Partner Born and raised in the Dallas area, Amanda attended Lakeview Centennial HS in Garland. She has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Texas A&M, class of ‘98. She is a certified public accountant with 16 years of experience and she specializes in taxation and has expertise in partnership and corporate tax. Amanda is married to Jeff Stolz, and they live in Washington with their 3 daughters. Her interests include spending time with family, traveling, volunteering with Toys for Tots and running. She has done several runs for charities, including a 4- day run at Disney World for the Give Kids the World Foundation. She teaches Sunday school at Friedens UCC in Washington, is a member of the Rotary Club of Washington County, and graduated from Leadership Washington County, class of 2008.

Gena Wilimitis Miracle Farm - Director of Development Gena has over 25 years of experience in the nonprofit arena, as well as the securities sector; both on the private and regulatory side. She is responsible for development activities at Miracle Farm. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication from McMurry University, in Abilene, and is a fifth generation Texan. Born in Lubbock, she spent many years in Moriarty, New Mexico, where she met husband, Bernie. They are mom and dad to four dogs, two horses, two Longhorns, and two adorably ugly donkeys. Leadership kicks off with Communication Session There are many different styles of leadership qualities. Discovering ways to communicate effectively was the focus of Leadership Washington County’s opening session in August with Dr. Chris Boleman of the Department of Agricultural Leader-
ship, Education, and Communications at Texas A&M University. The day was full of activities to teach effective communication skills. After an introduction and ice breaker activity, the class took a personality quiz and then were

led through several activities and exercises which focused on goal setting, strategic planning, visioning, and organizing. Dr. Boleman is big on tying leadership theory into everyday use. Future sessions will focus on

Building a Team of Leaders September marked the second session of learning experiences for the Leadership Class of 2017 participants. Understanding and implementing different leadership and communication styles was the focus of the session. Kurt Podeszwa from Camp For All led the day-long workshop at their amazing facility near Burton. The session was full of activities to focus on team-building skills. The class was led through exercises that helped each
participant recognize their strengths and weaknesses in order to focus on growth. Throughout the day class members were reminded that leadership is proactive and effective leaders sometimes emerge due to their placement within an organization, not necessarily due to their position. “I loved every activity as it was very hands-on and interactive. Kurt was a great speaker. I’m very inspired after leaving Camp For All, it is such a neat facility,”
said one student. Camp Director Kurt Podeszwa shared the mission and history behind Camp For All, which hosts over more than 7,000 campers annually, and also described the many volunteer opportunities that exist there daily. The session concluded with a walking tour of the camp grounds. A world unto itself, Camp For All was designed for children and adults with special needs and challenging illnesses to have
the opportunity to experience horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, archery, water activities, team sports, arts and crafts, nature programs, and much more at their own level. Leadership Washington County is a program of the Washington County Chamber aimed at educating and motivating current and future leaders. In the next session on October 18, the participants will explore Washington County’s local history.

On Saturday, October 15, from 3-7pm, a variety of hand-crafted brews from across Texas and beyond will be served in Downtown Brenham. Coinciding with the Texas Brew-Step event, the first ever Texas Arts & Music Festival is going to be launched in Downtown Brenham! It will be a weekend packed with live music, art and outdoor murals, delicious food and drinks. The festival begins at 5pm on Friday, October 14, and continues throughout the weekend. Saturday, October 29 the 2nd annual Park Street Halloween Party will take place in Downtown Brenham, and you are invited. It is THE place to be! There will be street dancing, a costume contest, kid activities, food trucks, and LIVE MUSIC by the Aaron Loesch Band from 7pm-Midnight.
Tombstone Tales
On Sunday, October 30, starting at 6:30pm, take your family to experience the history of the famous and infamous buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Burton. The fun will include guided cemetery walks, kid’s activities, snacks and drinks, and kids are encouraged to wear Halloween costumes! $5 for adults; kids are free. The historic chapel will be open for visitors. All proceeds benefit the Mt. Zion Historic Chapel Restoration project.
‘The Wonder Bread Years’ at the O’Donnell
On November 1 experience a fresh and funny salute to Americana, “The Wonder Bread Years.” Starring Pat Hazell, this is a fast-paced, hilarious one-man show that gracefully walks the line between standup and theatre. Audiences across the country have enjoyed a show that not only restores a much-needed sense of wonder, but leaves audiences laughing and savoring the past like never before. From sitting at the kids’ table, to riding in the back of the Country Squire Wagon, The Wonder Bread Years is a comic bulls-eye for Baby Boomers everywhere.

The Heritage Society of Washington County is teaming up with Hermann Furniture to bring you Christmas at the Mansion November 5-6. The mansion’s exterior and eight rooms will feature different holiday themes designed and decorated by Jennifer Hermann. There will be inspiration at every turn, all set in the historic Giddings Stone Mansion. For $5 at the door you are able to tour the entire Mansion, and for $13 in advance, or $15 at the door, you have the opportunity to tour all 3 historic homes: Giddings Stone Mansion, Giddings Wilkin House, and the Ross Carroll Bennett House! University of Texas Wind Ensemble
On November 19, the Round Top Festival Institute will host the University of Texas Wind Ensemble, conducted by Jerry Junkin. This Wind Ensemble has firmly established itself as one of America’s elite wind bands. They made their international debut at the Fifth Conference of the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles in Manchester, England in 1991, and their New York debut at Carnegie Hall in February 1998. 50 Years of Theatre at the O’Donnell
For five decades, the Theatre Arts Program at Blinn College in Brenham has entertained, engaged, and delighted young and old audiences alike. Celebrate this landmark at the O’Donnell Performing Arts Center with performances from current students, former students, and talented performing arts faculty. All shops will be open, and there will be other fun things throughout the day! Stay for the Lighted Parade on Saturday evening – it’s a lot of fun for the whole family and is a great way to get into the holiday spirit!
Early Voting Begins Oct. 24
On November 8, residents of Washington County will be able to vote for federal, state and local candidates. But this year, make a point to Vote Early, at your convenience! You can vote early at the Courthouse Annex at 100 S. Park Street in Downtown Brenham (across the street from the Courthouse). It is the most convenient way to vote. Early voting hours are from October 24 through 28 from 8am to 5pm; on Saturday, October 29, from 9am to 2pm; on Sunday, October 30, from 12pm to 3pm; and from October 31 through November 4 from 8am to 5pm. Candidates in local races have completed Candidate Questionnaires and you can read through them to learn more about their positions on various issues.
