EVERYTHING

Is Going To Be Alright! By now most of you have heard the news that I am being INVOLUNTARILY mobilized by the Navy to go to Djibouti, Africa next year. I will be gone for 366 days, starting on March 31, 2017. I do not want to leave you and my family for a year. However, I take comfort in the knowledge that God always holds you and my family in His loving and powerful hands. Psalm 24:1 tells us, “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.” God is already caring for all of us and for all who are dear to us. He has been doing this throughout time and He will continue to do this. So what do we have to worry about? Nothing. Everything really will be alright. In the coming days, we will have session forums and newsletter articles about how the Lord is going to continue caring for the congregation while I am away. As always, please feel free to contact me, Pastor Kelsey, or any of the session members if you have any questions or concerns. In Christ, Pastor David Our Session: Randy Beckler, Chris Gordon, Shirley Lewis, Karen Golden, Randy Huffman, Ron Tysseling, Michele Young, Gayle DeVries, Dory Haselswerdt

Don’t Miss the Session Forum on Sunday, October 2 immediately after Worship. 1

Trust and Obey When we walk with the Lord in the Light of his Word, what a Glory he sheds on our way! While we do his good will, he abides with us still, and with all who will trust and obey. Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies, but his smile quickly drives it away; Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear, can remain when we trust and obey. Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share, but our toil he doth richly repay; Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross, but is blest if we trust and obey. Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at his feet, or we’ll walk by his side in the way; What he says we will do, where sends we will go, never fear, only trust and obey. Trust and obey, for there’s no other way to be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

W

These beautiful words are from the hymn Trust and Obey, which is based off of 1 Samuel 18:22, “To trust is better than sacrifice.”

e don’t know what God has in store for David and his family or what God has in store for our congregation, but we do know that when we trust and obey God will richly bless us. We must move through the shock, doubt, and fear of change. Instead, let us walk towards what God is doing in our lives, in our community, and in David and Cathy’s lives. Now, more than ever we need to come together in love and unity to support David and each other. Let’s focus on the blessings that this time may hold for us. We get to support David with cards, care packages, and emails. This in turn will support those David is working with and ministering to. We get to walk with David out into the mission field and bring the light of the world into a dark place. We get to connect and welcome David into our church in a way that wouldn’t be possible with him here, and when he comes back we get to be thankful for getting him back safely. At home we get to continue to look at ourselves and our community in a new way. This brings up new challenges and issues that we will face together as a church family. We get to discover more about ourselves as individuals and as a faith community. When churches are too ridge and set in their ways there is little room for growth, but we get an opportunity to stretch and mature. This time, now more than ever before, is our chance to answer God’s call to trust and obey. In Christ, Pastor Kelsey Our pastors are thankful to be serving our congregation, not only in worship but even more so in relationships. They also need their private space, as we all do. If you have church related business to discuss with them, we prefer you do not drop by their homes unannounced in order to do so. They are always available by phone or email for visits, appointments and emergencies, and their schedules are flexible. Their contact info is above. Thank you! 2

Last season we traveled all over the world each month in our programs and menus. We're staying in the good ole USA this season with meals from different regions of the country. So all those 70 and over! Please join us at the VIP luncheon, Wednesday, October 19th at 11:30 for a tasty lunch and interesting program. Please call the office if you need a ride. Otherwise, just come as you are and enjoy fellowship time sharing a delicious lunch (no need to RSVP).

Please Pray for one of our local Ministries Dear FPCU, I wanted to let you know that we did not get a long-term lease at the Ukiah community center. Ford Street Project will use this location for a training center. I am a little sad but not discouraged. God is faithful and I believe this ministry is on his heart. My prayer request is that we will find a new location ASAP so we can continue to minister to these poor and homeless people. You have been a Huge blessing . Thank you, Tony Huerta, Executive Director Nor Cal Christian Ministries 3

at First Pres Ukiah Early Morning Men's Bible Study Tuesday, 7:00 - 8:00 am in the Library

A great morning snack and coffee greets this small group of “early-bird” men for their interactive lay lead Bible study. They strive to confirm their faith and look for a deeper meaning through a study of the bible and/or study guides. A deep level of understanding scripture is not required. We welcome all men who would enjoy great conversation and a short bible study. Come and see how the Bible can give us guidance for our lives today. This is a drop-in Bible Study, come when you are

Women’s Serendipity Bible Study Tuesday, 8:30 - 9:30 am in the Library

Using the Serendipity Bible for Groups, we study a complete book (which is mutually agreed upon by the group), reading a specified portion each week and answering the “cup” (ice breaker), “book” (about the text) and “heart” (life application) questions. Since the questions are found within the pages we’re reading, we are literally ‘all on the same page’. The passages are read together during our gathering, so there is no homework. We rotate the “facilitator” each week, and spend time sharing prayer requests, praises, and a light snack. We are open to anyone who may be interested studying and fellowshipping with other women at FPCU. We are currently reading the book of Daniel.

SIPs (Sisters in Prayer) Bible Study Tuesday, 5:00 - 6:00 pm in the Library

“The Ragamuffin Gospel” by Brennan Manning will serve as the basis for this study. From the book’s cover here are some quotes:

“I found deep comfort in realizing that Jesus loves even me, a ragamuffin, just as I am.” – Michael Card, musician, recording artist and author of A Violent Grace. “Brennan does a masterful job of blowing the dust off of shopworn theology and allowing God’s grace to do what only God’s grace can do - amaze.” – Max Lucado, bestselling author of The Gift for All People. “This is a zestful and accurate portrayal that tells us unmistakably that the gospel is good, dazzlingly good.” – Eugene Peterson, author of The Message.

This study will be about 11-12 weeks long. Please order a book through Amazon and another source.

Women’s PW Bible Study

Wednesday, October 12 - 1:30 pm in the James Room PW continues its study of the book Outrageous Joy! This sparkling love-and-laugher-filled book by Patsy Clairmont, Barbara Johnson, Marilyn Meberg, Luci Swindoll, Sheila Walsh and Thelma Wells, reveals the fact that we serve an outrageously joyful God! If you need a ride, please call Jaunita: 263-5534 to coordinate.

childrenyouthfamilies HANGOUT

We are starting Hangout again in September. It has been hard to find helpers for weekly meetings, so we are going to meet once a month. We need 5-6 helpers who would be willing to help the second Tuesday of each month (the exception being Sept, when we will meet the second Wed) with either cooking, activities (we can get very creative with this), or being a table parent/grandparent. The ideal would be to have the same people do the same job every month so the kids really get to know you. Our hope is to do this monthly through the school year. If you have a heart for this ministry please pray-fully consider helping and contact Dory or Kelsey. Our first meeting on September 14th is coming soon!

#SWAG GRADES 5 AND UP: Join us Friday, October 28th from 6:309pm, for a SCAVENGER HUNT, games, and dinner (to go with your treats!). Don’t forget to wear a costume and bring your friends!! NOVEMBER BASH AT THE WOODS Our youth group (#SWAG) will be attending NovemberBash for 6th - 8th Graders together this year! Kids and teens are invited for a lively weekend at The Woods November 4th - 6th, with opportunities for connection, reflection, discovery, and growth -- through discussion, prayer, time on the challenge course, group games, and more! Individuals are welcome to join in and revel in the life-changing gifts of God by being loved unconditionally, playing uninhibitedly, laughing uncontrollably and growing unexpectedly. Ask Kelsey or Dory for an application, discuss financial aid, or register online at http://www.westminsterwoods.org

Anna Maria Mendietta returns to Ukiah!!! Yes, this year, our 9th Christmas Carol-Sing, will again feature this beautiful harpist as our special guest – for not only the Carol-Sing, but she will also join us in worship that morning. Anna Maria is the principle harpist with the Sacramento Philharmonic and has performed as a soloist and as a member with many symphony orchestras and chamber music groups across the country. She is often a featured soloist with orchestras, and has received international recognition as “an exceptional soloist” by the American League of Symphony Orchestras for her performance of the tango music of Astor Piazzolla marking history with the unique programming and use of harp in this musical style. An advocate of contemporary music, Ms. Mendieta previously served a long tenure as the principle harpist with the nationally acclaimed Women’s Philharmonic. Anna Maria was also a featured instrumentalist for several seasons with Theater Flamenco of San Francisco. Ms. Mendieta performed for the 2006 National Harp Conference premiering her presentation of harp and tango music. Her national touring concert-show “Tango del Cielo” is the focus of a documentary film. We’re so pleased she is able to come again this year. I would like to extend the invitation, also, to everyone who enjoys singing to participate in the Community Choir (can you carry a tune? You can sing!) No need to be able to read music if you can follow along and learn by ear. If you can join in, please mark your calendars for the following rehearsal dates. And as always, I invite you to bring along your friends who might also like to sing. Rehearsals are at 12:30 in the FPCU sanctuary: Sundays 12:30: October 23 & 30, November 13 & 20, December 4 &11 (No rehearsal November 6 & 27) Friday, December 16 – 5:30pm: dress rehearsal on the risers Sunday, December 18 Call 2:00pm – Event begins at 3:30

Be sure to mark your calendars, you won’t want to miss it!

To our generous congregation: Wow! We are nearing the end of the year and the busy, hectic holiday season is rapidly approaching. The deacons of our wonderful church would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all who have graciously said “Yes!” when called upon to help. In so doing, you (we all) are saying “Yes!” to God. You’ve been there to help serve in so many ways. Whether it’s being an usher or a greeter, a cookie baker or lunch maker. A driver, a provider of a homemade hot meal or assistance in a household project. You have said “Yes!” We would also like to thank those who donate to our church coffee hour fund. We know how much we all enjoy getting together with friends after church, some we only see on Sundays. So it is our pleasure to provide coffee and treats each week while we fellowship after worship, and sometimes have a chance to welcome visitors as well. As most of you know, this year Deacons started something new. On the first Sunday of each month we have a cake to honor and celebrate the birthdays for that month. It’s been a pleasure to be able to do this along with the refreshments for the rest of the month. Your gifts in the basket show us how much you appreciate what we do, besides helping to off-set the costs. So we hope that this message gets out to each and every one - The Deacons truly love and appreciate all of you and we are so grateful for all that you give in time and money and love for the work of our church. We thank you for helping us as we all serve our great God together. God bless you all. Love in Christ, Your Deacons

MISSIONS Update&Activities We have been going strong and have had some wonderful, fun activities this past month.

Community Chili Cook Off – Although we did not place in the chili cook-off we had a great time making chili, decorating our booth and joining with the community for this fun event. Thanks to our cooks: Perrine Kirchen, Kelsey Ingalls, Wilma Pribyl, Chris Gordon, Michele Young; Our set-up and decoration committee: Perrine Kirchen, Kelsey Ingalls, Kathy and Mark Smith, Caroline Crowley, Barbara McLean, Michele Young; Our Servers: David Rodriguez, Karen Golden, Kelsey Ingalls, Michele Young; Our Clean-up committee: Lenord Swope, Debbie and Dave Holland, David Rodriguez, Perrine Kirchen, Kelsey Ingalls, Michele Young. A special thank you to Randy Beckler and Ryan Young for dismantling their tailgates for us to use at our booth, and Josh Kirchen for saving the day by loaning us an easy-up to give us some shade! Pedals for Protein – The Petal for Protein Riders rode into town on Sunday, September 18 and were

greeted by Kitty and Roe Sandelin who graciously provided a place for them to cool-off, clean-up and unwind from their ride from Mendocino to Ukiah. We all met at the church for a pot-luck dinner and again the next morning for a light breakfast before they headed out to Middletown for their second day. They really appreciated our hospitality and donations. We collected $263 with our bike money tree! Thanks to Kitty Sandelin for being the organizer of this event, to all the host families that made room for the 19+ riders, and all others who participated to make this event possible.

Pumpkinfest – Now our Committee is looking forward to the Pumpkinfest ~ “Dinosaurs and Pump-

kins Galore”, coming October 15 & 16. This is a great opportunity for outreach in our community. We will have our new beautiful brochures describing church activities and upcoming events along with our worship schedule, bible studies etc. We will have a bean bag toss game for the kids (with candy! ) and Operation Christmas Child Shoeboxes and display. Volunteers needed for booth decoration and set-up on Saturday, 2hour shift volunteers to man the booth for Saturday and Sunday. Look for the sign-up sheets and volunteer today!

Bethy Mack – Our Missions Committee, along with PW, had the opportunity to help send our own mis-

sionary, Bethy Mack on her mission trip to Africa. We sent her a combined total of $900. Bethy is working for an organization called The ALKARE Foundation. They are driven by the love and example of our Lord, Jesus Christ, and are led to provide basic nutrition for Christian orphanages in highly economically challenged areas of the world. They provide care and food for orphanages in Africa and Mexico. We are hoping through Bethy’s experience along with some of our own missions experiences and contacts that we might have an opportunity to send a team of missionaries to Africa in the near future.

Christmas Charity Faire – Many Charities/One stop shopping

Are there people on your Christmas list who don’t need more “stuff” but to whom you would still like to give a gift? Come to our Christmas Charity Faire on November 27th and December 4th, during coffee hour, to make a purchase or donation to one of many charities in their name. Gift cards in the honoree’s name will be available. There will be tables for both local and international organizations. Would you be willing to help staff a table? Wilma needs YOU!! Contact her at 462-4134.

Cents-Ability – Don’t forget to bring your Cents-Ability offering to church on Sunday October 2.

If you need a can to collect your families offering, there is one waiting for you in the church narthex. Thank you for participating. We have collected over $100 so far so keep up the good work! 8

Stitches Heart from the

Prayer Shawl Ministry

We have a wonderful new ministry opportunity that has just come our way ! As most of you know, we have a crochet, knitting group that meets every 2nd Saturday of each month to pray and make shawls for people in need… whether it is for healing or someone who just needs a hug. Since our ministry began we have given out 83 shawls. We also make items to be placed in Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes, and scarves and hats for our Christmas tree. I have connected with a woman who lives in Cloverdale, Lillian Wohlfarth. She is currently leading a group of women in Sonoma County who make lap blankets and afghans for our Vets. She gathers them up and takes them to the Veterans Hospital in San Francisco where they are given out to the Vets to help them keep warm. She wants to reach out into the Mendocino County area. I have wanted to get involved with this kind of ministry so when this came my way I was very excited and thought this would be a perfect ministry for our group to be a part of. We will be making the blankets and afghans here, then every three months I will connect with Lillian and she will deliver them to San Francisco. I will be also attach a very small tag to the blankets that reads as follows: “This was made with prayers for healing or Your Body, Mind and Spirit. As you use this may you feel the warm embrace of our Heavenly Father.” – 1st Presbyterian Church-Ukiah CA. “. . . and lo, I am with you always . . .” Matthew 28:20 I am so grateful, thankful, and blessed for all the woman who are involved with this group. The time and effort they put into this ministry is wonderful. Thanks and Blessings Caroline Crowley

Dear Pedal for Protein Riders and Supporters, Lots of smiles this past Thursday as over 30 riders rode 10, 20, or 48 miles yesterday on the grand finale from the Rockville Presbyterian Fellowship. See photos below. Our fundraising goal of $35,000 is in sight at approximately $32,000. Thank you to all and make sure you have sent in your donation and or your church’s donation by September 30. The Rockville congregation really put out the red carpet with a wonderful pool party and dinner at the Peterson Ranch, complements of Jim and Diana Peterson, friends of the congregation. A huge thank you to the Mendocino, Ukiah, Davis Community Church, Benicia, Fairfield and Rockville congregations for delicious meals, accommodations, and your friendship and support for Pedal for Protein. Pedaling Blessed... Patty Sander, Hunger Action Advocate; Redwoods Presbytery 9
