THE WEEKLY CONNECTION ONE IN JESUS…REACHING MANY! Week of October 7, 2018

WORSHIP CELEBRATION During our worship series so far, we have been reminded through God's Word that the Church is not and never has been the building...or the steeple...or the doors. The reason is simple: Jesus didn't come to suffer, die and rise again for drywall, carpet and stained glass...He came for people like you and me as well as for people beyond the walls. (If you missed previous messages in the series, be sure to visit our website sermon message archive.) This is why...we're thinking it's time to get back to the basics (especially as we prepare to renovate and expand our campus facilities) and picture Church as so much more than an hour or two every weekend. What if we all started to see Church as a 24/7 thing with words and actions in response to time spent in Jesus' presence through worship? What if the Church left the building? And that is why hundreds of people of all ages and abilities from our St. John family stepped up to BE the Church leaving the building and serving throughout the community at over 15 different serve sites this weekend. In worship next weekend, we will share a highlight video of ways that many served as the hands and feet of Jesus. Be sure to join us again! HOLY BAPTISM – This weekend, at the 10:45 AM Modern Praise worship service, we celebrate the baptism of Miles Peter Miehlke, son of Kimberly & Ronnie. May God richly bless Miles and his family! WORSHIP ATTENDANCE UPDATE “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together…but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”—Hebrews 10:24-25 Attendance for the weekend of September 29-30………………………876

BIBLICAL DISCOVERY NEW START DATE – Bibles & Basketball will begin on Saturday, October 13, 8:00-10:00 AM in the gym, rather than October 6 as previously printed. Bibles & Basketball is an opportunity for men of all ages to get into God’s Word, play some basketball, and promote the ideals of Christian brotherhood. For more information, please contact Jim Janetzke at [email protected] or 248-895-9938.

All articles submitted to The Weekly Connection will be subject to approval and editing by the staff. Articles may be sent via email to [email protected] and must be received no later than Wednesday at noon the week of publication.

IMPORTANT ONE LEGACY UPDATE AND CEREMONIAL GROUNDBREAKING EVENT! This weekend, on Saturday, October 6, we gathered together as a St. John church and school family to give thanks for all the Lord's faithfulness throughout the years, and break ground on all that is ahead! Immediately after this special service of prayer and celebration, hundreds of those in attendance went out as God's people to serve our community as His Church! See the related article in the Compassionate Service section. As our ONE Legacy initiative moves forward, we praise the Lord that contributions in follow-up to $3.5 million in pledges continue to be strong! In fact, as anticipated, we have recently surpassed the $1 million milestone in gifts received! Thank you, St. John family, for your ongoing generosity! The project itself is very extensive and while we are making great progress, developments in recent weeks have led to an anticipated slower construction timeline than we had initially hoped for and communicated this summer. While this is disappointing, we've been reminded that delays are not unusual for a project of this scope, and our leadership is committed to proceeding in the best way possible as we carefully steward the blessings the Lord has provided. Watch for a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) email update and Congregation Forum date coming soon. May the Lord continue to bless these efforts for the future! Please keep for the Lord's guidance and provision for all that is ahead. These are truly exciting times! EXCITING ONE LEGACY MISSION TITHE UPDATE! While we wait with anticipation for all that is ahead with new construction and renovation work on our campus in the coming year, the mission tithe (10%) portion of our ONE Legacy Initiative is on the verge of making a huge global impact! As shared with our congregation this past spring, one of the chosen grant recipients of this tithe is St. Peter Church and School in Middelburg, South Africa. This fall our St. John family was privileged to assist in funding $20,000 (half the total installation cost) of a solar energy project on the St. Peter campus that will assist in alleviating 80% ofcosts and freeing up more financial resources for educating over 850 students - many of whom live below the poverty level. This grant partnership is in addition to other capital improvements being made in Middelburg by Here We Stand funding through our Michigan District.

This month (October 15-24) representatives will be traveling to South Africa to celebrate Pastor Khumalo’s ministry at St. Peter in Middelburg and his mission partnership with our district. Pastor Marc was recently invited to take part in this mission relationship building trip. After several days of prayer and consultation with our Vestry, he along with our Vestry Chair, Dave Halverson have prayerfully decided to go and represent our St. John family. Trip costs in part will be offset by a separate designated International Missions Fund, not the ONE Legacy tithe. Please keep all of this in prayer as we praise the Lord for this incredible opportunity to make a difference in Jesus’ name. QUILTS FOR LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF made by the Gleaners Quilting group are on display in the Atrium THIS WEEKEND after all Saturday and Sunday services. If you would like to purchase any of the quilts ($35 each), you may do so and all money will be sent to Lutheran World Relief. The remaining quilts will be boxed up and eventually sent to many parts of the U.S. and the world for distribution during disaster relief. Be sure to stop by and view the beautiful quilts TODAY! A MESSAGE OF THANKS to St. John congregation was recently received from HOPE Adult Shelter in Pontiac for much needed supplies that were gathered and donated to HOPE by the St. John family. Excerpts are shared here: Christmas came on August 30 this year! Thank you so much for the laundry soap, paper towels, underwear, fabric softener, snacks, water, t-shirts, facial cleansers, bras, socks, deodorant, hygiene items, clothing and soap. This time of the year, we are running very low on supplies. Your gift ensured that we have the necessities to ensure that all have clean bedding, underwear, new clothes and basic hygiene…From the bottom of my heart and on behalf of those we serve, I thank you for your support. ~Sincerely, Elizabeth Kelly, Executive Director FINANCIAL UPDATE “You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God!” - 2 Corinthians 9:11. COMPASSIONATE SERVICE What an amazing experience this weekend as hundreds of people of all ages and abilities went out to serve those in need with compassion in Jesus' name! Working with our area mission partners, we secured over fifteen different sites in Rochester, Pontiac and Detroit where teams from our St. John family were able to serve with the love of Jesus. Many many thanks to our new Director of Mission Mobilization Pastor Jon Trinklein, and to our new Mission & Ministry Coordinator Jennie Eller for their incredible efforts in organizing and leading this massive Serve Event. We also thank our excellent team of site leaders and all who stepped up to serve as the hands and feet of Jesus! In worship next weekend, we look forward to viewing a highlight video of the many ways our St. John family served in Jesus’ name throughout the community. Thanks be to God!
