Minute for Generosity

(8:15 & 9:30) Lindsey Tomlinson (11:00) Ceil Blackwell

Each Sunday, we offer four opportunities for you to worship with us at White Memorial (8:15, 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary and 11:00 a.m. OnPoint@1704 in Pickard Hall). While you will notice differences in music, location and worship leadership among our different services, what unites us in our worship is our liturgy. All services use the same Call to Worship, Prayer of Confession, readings from scripture and Affirmation of Faith. Joseph Renville (1779-1846) was the son of a French trader and a Dakota woman and helped to establish a mission and school for the Dakota tribe near Lac qui Parle (Lake that speaks). His knowledge of the Dakota language and culture aided him as he adapted one of their chants to create this hymn melody and to author the original seven stanzas based on Jeremiah 10: 12-13.

Call to Worship One: God’s love unites us in worship. All: Come, let us worship the Lord! One: People will come from east and west and north and south All: to sit at the table in the kingdom of God. One: Let us join our hearts with sisters and brothers all over the world. All: Come, let us worship the Lord! *Hymn 340 - This is My Song

*Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession Gracious God, Jesus came as your reflection and exact imprint. He taught us how to love, embrace and serve others, but too often we look away from the needs of others and refuse to see your image in them. We gravitate to people who are most like us, who make us feel comfortable. Forgive us when our sight is narrow and our love is conditional. Help us look for your image in the whole human family. Help us embrace others in spite of our differences and seek to serve you in all who have need. In the name of Jesus Christ, unite us with all your people. Amen.

*Assurance of Pardon The practice of singing the psalms has been going on since ancient times. In their original form the psalms were used in the worship at the temple in Jerusalem built by King Solomon 900 years before the birth of Jesus Christ. Over the next two months, we will explore the different traditions of psalm singing, starting today with metrical psalms. Metrical psalms are almost identical with traditional hymnody, and can be found scattered throughout the Glory to God hymnal.

*Affirmation of Faith adapted from the Confession of Belhar We believe in one holy, universal Christian church, and in the unity of the communion of saints of the entire human family. We believe that this unity of the people of God must be manifest and active, in that we believe one another; that we give ourselves willingly and joyfully to one another, that we share one baptism together, that we eat of one bread and drink of one cup together, that we confess one name, one Lord, for one cause, with one hope, which is the height and the breadth and the depth and the love of Christ, forever and ever. Amen.

(9:30 & 11:00) Cesy and Carlos Cisneros; members of Iglesia Santuario The first Sunday in October is designated as World Communion Sunday, which celebrates our oneness in Christ with all our brothers and sisters around the world. Celebration of World Wide Communion Sunday was adopted as a denominational practice in the Presbyterian Church (US) in 1936 and then spread to the larger ecumenical church beginning in 1940. Since then, World Communion Sunday has grown into an international ecumenical celebration of Christian unity.

Iglesia Santuario is a new worshiping community of New Hope Presbytery that reaches out to the Hispanic population of Raleigh and Wake County to build a space for God’s worship and service. Santuario is working with Presbytery’s Church Development & Evangelism Committee to be chartered as a congregation of the Presbyterian Church (USA) in the coming years. With average Sunday worship attendance of 70, their ministry focuses on outreach to the community through sports, particularly soccer and volleyball, Christian education, and service through the Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity. WMPC has supported Santuario through its outreach budget for the past two years and our two congregations partner on joint Habitat projects.

The Confession of Belhar comes from South Africa and was included in the Book of Confessions of the PC(USA) in 2016. It is our 12th recognized confession and the first to originate from the global south. It was written during the battle against apartheid. The website for the PC(USA) states, “Apartheid is the human context for the Confession of Belhar, yet it is never mentioned in the confession. Rather, Belhar lifts up the heart of the Gospel as a bringer of hope for the human condition. Belhar presents a Christian view of racism, separation, and suffering by those who had experienced the realities of these evils. It demonstrates that confessional affirmations can arise from social ethics.”

FINLANDIA

*Call to Confession *Prayer of Confession Gracious God, Jesus came as your reflection and exact imprint. He taught us how to love, embrace and serve others, but too often we look away from the needs of others and refuse to see your image in them. We gravitate to people who are most like us, who make us feel comfortable. Forgive us when our sight is narrow and our love is conditional. Help us look for your image in the whole human family. Help us embrace others in spite of our differences and seek to serve you in all who have need. In the name of Jesus Christ, unite us with all your people. Amen.
