Friendship Celebration Lutheran Church Sunday October 28th, 2018 12:30 pm at Friendship Celebration Lutheran Church Mark your calendars! Watch for the RSVP Invitations in your bulletins in the coming weeks!

October 2019 Dear Friends in Christ, What were you doing twenty years ago? The answer—if you are Pastor Tom—is planting a church! Perhaps you were among the crew that signed its name to the charter constitution when the church incorporated on Oct. 25, 1998. (Check out the display in the entrance off the fellowship hall for the actual document.) I bet you have some stories to tell! October brings a lot of things to celebrate and since Celebration is in our name, that’s all the more reason to not let this milestone slide by unappreciated. I hope you will join us on Sunday, Oct. 28, for a special Reformation Sunday where we will celebrate the 20th anniversary of Friendship Celebration Lutheran Church. In addition, we’ll also show our appreciation for Pastor Tom and Linda for their ongoing faithful service to the Lord. The hospitality crew has already kicked into gear planning a special luncheon at 12:30 pm on that Sunday. We’ll enjoy telling stories and sharing memories of how our congregation got to this point all by the grace of God working in the lives of His people. Here are some more bells and whistles to commemorate the day…Susan Olson from Lutheran Church Extension Fund will present FCLC with a check of our earnings through Shared Blessings. And we will also have the new parking lot and the Paving His Way efforts to officially conclude. Just how does one bless or dedicate a parking lot? By parking in it on a regular basis! We are also planning a few extra surprises on Oct. 28 that I won’t reveal here, but it will be a good day in the life of the congregation. Be sure to RSVP and plan on being there. And if you want even more Reformation hoopla, you can come to the Circuit Reformation worship service at Grace, Caldwell, at 4 pm, where I get to preach. Good times! An anniversary is not just a time to appreciate the past (although we should do that!) but it’s also a time to set our eyes on the horizon. What do we want the future to look like? I want there to be more disciples of Jesus who are engaged in life together and in service to their community. At present, we have our first wave of leaders and co-leaders trained and ready to disciple others through life groups. We’re in the midst of planting another congregation in Kuna that also has discipling at its core. To have a process of reallife discipleship is so exciting because it represents the path forward—each of us growing and helping others grow into the fullness of Christ. We are to glorify God, not ourselves. There are a lot of ministry activities and ideas, but Friendship Celebration’s own story shows us the best way to shape and influence the world for the next twenty years and beyond is to make disciples now. In Christ, Pastor Matt Henry

My Dad and His Lombard Chainsaw

From Pastor Tom’s Pen

My Dad was excited when he bought his first Lombard Chainsaw from my Uncle Karl. Dad had worked with my grandfather for years cutting fire wood for the two wood burning stoves in my grandparents’ house. One was for cooking and the other was for heating their home. I don’t know that my grandfather ever had a power chainsaw. Firewood was cut with a crosscut saw and with axes. It was hard work. Dad was so happy to now cut firewood for my grandparents with a chainsaw. Dad made it look so easy. When the Ohio Turnpike went through I was 6 years old, Dad had to cut down six or more Black Walnut trees. The trees were in the way of the super highway on my grandparents’ farm. The cross in the entry of our church is made from the wood of those trees. In the years that followed I helped Dad cut down many diseased Elm trees in Northwestern Ohio. They were great side jobs for my Dad and I earned some spending money. I was anxious to handle a chainsaw one day. Dad made it look so easy. Finally that day came when I was 12 or 13. I was pooped out after trying to handle the chainsaw five minutes. I still have his chainsaw. It weighs 44 pounds. Chain saws today are much lighter. My Dad died with his chainsaw in hand. He was cutting down a dead Oak tree in an elderly lady’s backyard from my home congregation. He had a massive heart attack doing what he loved to do for others. My brothers and I completed the job after Dad’s funeral. In the process I smashed a shed and gas can and broke down a cyclone fence. My aim wasn’t very good. My brothers often remind me of that experience today. If they wouldn’t have moved I would have smashed them too. We learn so many lessons in life. Dad taught me and my brothers the importance of hard work, and not to be afraid to try something you haven’t done before. He taught us how to be selfsufficient. He taught us about our duty to God and church community. Most important, he exemplified what it means to be a follower of Jesus and trusting in Him for the gifts of forgiveness, eternal life, and guidance for this life right now. Working with Dad gave me a lot of time think about trees. I have thought about the first tree mentioned in the Bible – the one God put in the Garden of Eden. He told Adam and Eve not to eat from that tree. God used the tree to test their loyalty and trust in Him. He was their Creator and they were His creation. But they just couldn’t resist because “the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom.” They disobeyed and ate. But it is a transplanted tree that is most important – the crude wooden cross of Calvary that was cut out of a sturdy tree. There our Savior hung between heaven and earth to bear every sin of every generation on His shoulders. It stands above all trees as a symbol of love, sacrifice and salvation. That’s the tree of life for us.

FRIENDSHIP CELEBRATION PRESCHOOL Registration for Fall Preschool Classes 2018-19 765 East Chinden Blvd., Meridian, ID 83646 [email protected]/208-288-2404 Preschool Director—Lori Jensen

Happy Harvest! The Meridian Fire Dept. visited the preschool in September. The fire fighters showed us the special clothes they have to wear to protect them from a fire. We appreciate the time they spend with us and we like their truck! Our outside time is so important to developing our large motor skills and our new friendships. The cooler fall weather is a welcome change from our very warm summer days.

We are learning that red and yellow make orange and apples, pumpkins and sunflowers decorate our classrooms. We’ll be visiting Linder Farms later this month to pick a pumpkin, visit some animals and enjoy a hay ride. Our annual Preschool Sunday Sing will be on October 14, for all classes, and is during the 11 am service @ FCLC. We’re practicing some special songs to sing for you. In His love, The Preschool Staff

New Life Groups Forming! Thank you to all who stopped by our table at the Rally Day! We especially thank those 20 people who indicated their interest in Life Groups. We will soon be in touch with you regarding Life Groups in your neighborhood. If you missed this opportunity and are interested in joining a Life Group, please contact Bob Kalthoff ([email protected]; Phone or text, 818-314-7481), or Judy Kalthoff ([email protected]; Phone or text, 818-314-7480). Some leaders are practicing in October what they learned in training. We also have a new Life Group being formed with Brett Lindemood as Leader and John Wiemer as Co-leader! They hope to start by first of November. If you are interested in joining this Life Group, contact Bob or Judy Kalthoff (see above). You may also contact Brett Lindemood ([email protected]; 208-982-1461). Please join us in praying that God will bless the discipleship process at FCLC. Something to Think About (with apologies to Dr. J. Vernon McGee) Suppose I should ask you, “What is the primary objective and purpose of reaching out to our community?” What would your answer be? Some would respond “to save souls.” It is true that community outreach should result in the saving of souls, but that is not the primary purpose. Someone else might say “We should preach the Gospel to every creature in order that we might obey the command of our Lord Jesus Christ. Those are our orders. We are to preach the Gospel everywhere. We are to get the Word of God out to people around the globe.” While this is true, it is not the primary motive of community outreach. It’s close but, not quite it. Let’s look at Psalm 67 verses 5 and 7. “May the peoples praise you O God; may all the peoples praise you….God will bless us, and all the ends of the earth will fear (reverential trust) Him.” So, the chief end of community outreach is to glorify God! That is the engine that pulls the train of every Christian enterprise. The engine is to glorify god, and that which follows is this: preach the Gospel, and get the Word out so people can be saved. We glorify God when we get His Word out. We glorify him when we teach the Gospel. We glorify Him when people are saved. The purpose is to glorify God!

Paving His Way (PHW)—PHW, the westward expansion of FCLC's parking lot, is finally nearing completion. The islands in the new parking area were excavated, filled with topsoil, and irrigation systems installed Sept 14th, and then the whole lot was striped Sept 18th. By Oct 15th, we expect to have new LED lighting installed throughout our parking areas, which will significantly improve night-time safety at FCLC. We are also on track to landscape the new parking islands by mid-Oct to complete this project. PHW costs are expected to end ~ 19% higher than originally planned due to Increased commodity costs (+20%) and extra civil engineering work. To that end, we encourage continued contributions towards PHW so that we end in the "black." If you have questions, please contact Ron Bischoff, Cell (208) 514-6643.
