Around Lakeway Visit the International Christmas Bazaar

This year’s event is on Saturday, Nov. 8 and will feature Fair Trade crafts from around the world. Enjoy a one-of-a-kind shopping experience at the International Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, November 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Lake Travis United Methodist Church. “Open Your Heart” to family and friends during the Christmas season, while offering hope and a chance for a better way of life to craftspeople in communities around the world. At the Bazaar you can purchase unique gifts that will truly make a difference to people in need. We have an even greater selection of Fair Trade crafts, scarves and jewelry this year. Browse the colorful displays presented by Ten Thousand Villages, True Vineyard Ministries, Imagine – A Fair Trade Craft Gallery, and others to discover wonderful gifts from around the world for your friends and family. “I love this Bazaar! I enjoy shopping for unique gifts and helping others at the same time,” said Christina McMillan. “The variety of beautiful jewelry, scarves and home décor is dazzling!” Shoppers can also make donations to local and worldwide organizations such as Partners in Hope, Christian Compassion Center, and Compassion International. You will receive gift cards to give to friends, family or co-workers who are being honored by your donations. All donations are tax deductible. Every dollar spent at the Bazaar will go outside the Lake Travis church to assist families with clothing, shelter, food, clean water, and education through the organizations represented. Your purchases of Fair Trade crafts help provide the artisans with fair wages, clean and safe working environments, and basic services in their communities. “When you open your heart to giving, angels fly to your door.” (author unknown) EVENT INFORMATION This event is being held in the MAC Building on the campus of Lake Travis United Methodist Church, 1502 RR 620 North (620 at Debba Drive). Admission is free. For more information, contact Marcia Dilly at [email protected] or 512-944-0631.

Library Hosts Halloween Events for the Whole Family! Lake Travis Community Library hosts four special Halloween events in the month of October. Favorite storyteller Bernadette Nason returns the library on Thursday, October 23 at 4 p.m. for an interactive Halloween Story Time. This award-winning actress and comedienne does more than simply recite a story – she truly performs and engages young people. “My objective is to offer theatrical pieces that challenge modern audiences to embrace and understand the human spirit while being completely entertained,” said Nason. English storyteller Nason tours the U.S. with programs of fabulous traditional stories, adapted from the folklore of cultures from all over the world. Combining creative drama with traditional storytelling, she entertains young people while reminding them of the lessons contained in every classic story. Her Halloween Story Time is a favorite every year. When was the last time you saw the 1984 horror comedy classic Gremlins? In the Steven Spielberg produced movie, a boy inadvertently breaks three important rules concerning his new pet and unleashes a horde of malevolently mischievous monsters on a small town. Teens and tweens are invited to this Halloween interactive showing on Friday, October 24 at 4 p.m. Refreshments will be provided.   On Tuesday, October 28 at 4 p.m., the library will present their monthly Family Flicks program with a Halloween double feature. All are invited to watch Toy Story of Terror and What’s New Scooby-Doo?: Halloween Special. Refreshments will be provided. Later in the month, the annual Pumpkin Parade will take place on Thursday, October 30 at 10:30 a.m. First gather to hear spooky songs from award winning children’s performer Staci Gray, then trick or treat around the library in a Halloween parade. All ages are invited to attend and, of course, costumes are encouraged! “Last year, some of my favorite costumes were a Superman Superbaby, a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, and a Maurice Sendak Wild Thing,” said Lake Travis Community Library Director Morgan McMillian. “I can’t wait to see this year’s costumes! This is one of our most popular events of the year.” Please contact the library at www.laketravislibrary.org and (512) 263-2885 for more information about any of these events. We look forward to seeing you at the library!

RETIRE BETTER - A LIFETIME OF INCOME

A TALE OF TWO BROTHERS WITH JOSH STIVERS

In a successful retirement income plan it is essential that you protect your portfolio from losses in the early years. To illustrate this concept I want to tell you a story of two brothers, Steve and Bill. Both brothers retired with the same $500,000 in each of their IRAs, and both needed to withdraw $30,000 annually as supplemental income. The biggest difference for Steve and Bill was the timing of their retirement. Steve achieved his retirement goals early and was able to retire in 1990. It took Bill another 10 years before he was able to make the same retirement decision in 2000. Let’s take a look at how both of them faired in their first 10 years of retirement. Based on market returns in the 90’s versus the 2000’s, their remaining IRA balances are very different. After 10 years of retirement, Steve’s IRA balance is over $1.2 Million due to the bull market of the 90’s. Bill was not so lucky. He retired right before the dot. com bust, and after 10 years his retirement had dwindled to just $156k. Both brothers made the same retirement decisions, but events outside of their control left them with entirely different outcomes. Based on the 10-year account balances, Steve should be able to continue comfortably receiving

$30k annually from his IRA. Bill, on the other hand, will have to be much more careful with his withdrawals to avoid running out of money. Your specific circumstances are likely different from both Steve and Bill, but this hypothetical example highlights the importance of the impact sequence of returns can have on a retirement income plan. When you retire and trade in your company paycheck for a portfolio paycheck generated by your investments, you no longer have time on your side to ride out negative market volatility. The importance of implementing a guaranteed lifetime income plan must not be neglected. By properly balancing your portfolio across different retirement asset classes, you can insure that you will have a lifetime of income that you cannot outlive, and at the same time, hedge yourself against inflation and future healthcare concerns. If you would like further information on this topic or to receive a copy of our report on retirement income planning, please send your requests to the email below. As always, we are here to answer your pressing questions and concerns regarding retirement investment planning. Send your questions and information requests to [email protected]

Around Lakeway Library Announces Teen Art Contest In celebration of Teen Read Week, the Lake Travis Community Library is holding its fourth annual art contest for students in grades 6-12. Teens are invited to create an original piece of 2-D art inspired by a personal reading experience, whether it be a re-working of a book cover, a depiction of a scene from a favorite book, or a character portrait. “We have had great success and seen amazing entries from teens during prior contests,” said Library Director Morgan McMillian. “We are excited to be able to exhibit and showcase many of our young artists in the meeting room during the month of November.” The entries will be judged by a panel of highly respected artists in the Lake Travis community. Johnnie Fields, Ben Kuenemann, and Ann Neighbors will evaluate the entries. Judge Johnnie Fields is a well-known local watercolor artist that conducts spring watercolor workshops in the Lakeway area. He grew up in Austin and received an Architecture Degree from the University of Texas in 1951. While studying Architecture at UT, he developed a love for painting in watercolor. He is past President of the Waterloo Watercolor Group in Austin and past President of the Odessa Art Association. Judge Ben Kuenemann has lived in The Hills for fifteen years. He began painting oil landscapes ten years ago and then switched to

watercolor after taking numerous workshops with various teachers, primarily Johnnie Fields and Danny Jones. Judge Ann Neighbors began painting in earnest after retiring and moving to Lakeway in 2000. After exploring various styles and subjects, her passion grew for oil still life paintings in the Old Master style. Ann has shown her work in many art shows and you can find her work in several homes in our community. Since moving to the area, Ann has been active in the Women’s Club of Greater Lakeway, along with serving on various committees for the City of Lakeway. Teen Read Week is the national literacy initiative of the Young Adults Library Services Association, a division of the American Library Association. It is celebrated by thousands of libraries and bookstores across the country every year. Entries to the Teen Read Week Art Contest are due by Friday, October 17 and a selection of the entries will be on display in the meeting room at the Lake Travis Community Library in November. Cash prizes of $150, $100, and $50 will be awarded. For more information, please pick up a brochure at the library, call 512-263-2885, or visit laketravislibrary.org.

Lakeway Voice - October 2014

Be Healthy Lake Travis is a movement in our community focused on living a sustainable healthy lifestyle. In 2012, the Be Healthy board launched a community initiative to educate our current and future generations about the importance of health and wellness. Our three Mayor’s endorsed the cities of Lakeway, The Hills and Bee Cave as a community who is focused on “Be Healthy”. Be Healthy Lake Travis understands that every individual, and family, are unique. It is important to understand how complex the phrase ‘be healthy’ is. There are an infinite number of definitions and applications. Be Healthy Lake Travis is dedicated to making sure everyone in our community has access to the knowledge, tools and active venues by focusing on three basic pillars of health: Physical, Emotional and Nutritional. With a balanced head on your shoulders, physical activity to keep your body active and a balanced healthy nutritional plan to keep your performance high. You have to put good things into your body in order to get good things out of your body, like mental and physical performance. It is important to remember that not one of these areas is more important than the other. Your body needs all three in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The three areas work together. Here is a Be Healthy Tip: Everyone has heard the tip to avoid using plastic water bottles. The reason people say this is because there are a lot of chemicals that are contained in plastic. Some of the chemicals in plastic water bottles are: phthalates, bisphenol A (BPA), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) — all of which alter hormone expression in nonhuman animals and humans. They are all known as endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs). Most of these chemicals enter our system during the production process and through the waste at the manufacturing plants when the chemicals are released into the environment. It is important to know what you are consuming because not all of the harmful chemicals are released into the environment, some of them stick around and are introduced directly into your system through the drinking bottles. Read the label, know what plastics are in your water bottles, try your best to avoid and #7, #3 and #6 plastics. And at any time you can avoid plastic all together because there are some amounts of harmful chemicals in all plastic, even if the levels are acceptable to scientists. Try replacing your plastic water bottles with metal, glass and paper. BREAK OUT YOUR DANCING SHOES FOR LAKEWAY’S BIG BAND BASH Lakeway Big Band Bash is still going strong after three years with the next dance set from 8-10 p.m. Oct. 13 at Lakeway Activity Center, 105 Cross Creek. The Republic of Texas Band featuring Lakeway singers David Cummings and Lisa Clark will fill the ballroom with a wide variety of favorite tunes, mostly from the Sinatra era, with fresh arrangements. Anyone may dance or tap their toes as they listen to Kent Dugan’s 17-piece orchestra, which consistently appeals to dancers of many generations. Lakeway Arts Committee sponsors the free event, but donations to the band are encouraged. A large dance floor and plenty of tables set the scene for a good time. Bring refreshments, if desired, as none are provided. Reservations are not accepted. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. “Get your dancing shoes polished, dress up a bit — but not formal — and come out to dance and listen to some really great music,” Lakeway Arts Committee chairman Fred Newton said. “This monthly event is another reason why living in Lakeway is so much fun.” For information, call Lakeway Activity Center at 512-261-1010.

Friday, October 17 at 7:30 p.m. The TexARTS Cabaret Series welcomes Kevin Ahart to the intimate Kam and James Morris Theatre.  The evening will showcase the charismatic young artist singing original and timeless classic covers that are rooted in pop and jazz.   TexARTS Kam and James Morris Theatre, 2300 Lohman’s Spur, Suite 160, Austin, TX 78734. Tickets: $25 - $35. TexARTS Box Office:  512-852-9079 x101 or visit www.tex-arts.org.

SCARE UP SOME FUN AT LAKEWAY’S

GREAT GOBLIN GLOW The creepy crawlies will crave the chills at the annual Great Goblin Glow from 7-9 p.m. Oct. 18 at Lakeway City Park, 502 Hurst Creek Road, in Lakeway. Hot air balloons will illuminate the night sky in balloon glows throughout the evening as the main attraction at the Lakeway Parks and Recreation Department event. Don’t forget to see the live bats exhibit and venture into Lakeway’s own Dead End Cemetery. StratKat DJ will put the “boo” in boogie as he spins records. “Our event is full of chills, but there’s nothing quite like the warm glow of the hot air balloons, caramel corn and fun with family and friends to fill everyone with the Halloween spirit,” said Andra Dearing, Lakeway Parks and Recreation director. Several vendors will provide food and drinks for purchase including pizza, sno cones, and caramel corn. Limited parking is available at Lakeway City Park and Ranger Field. School News FACTS ON THE LTYA BALLOT MEASURE

This November, voters in the City of Lakeway will have the opportunity to vote for or against a bond to purchase fields for LTYA. Here are the facts surrounding this ballot measure: FACT: LTYA has an annual registration growth of 6% in its youth sports with only 20 acres of land. Passage of the measure: • Allows the City of Lakeway to purchase and retain ownership of over 70 acres of new LTYA field capacity. • Allows LTYA to leverage proceeds from the sale of Field of Dreams towards the new fields. • Allows LTYA to expand affordable youth sports offerings to an exploding local population for the next 30 years.

FACT: LTYA’s limited field space makes it dependent on LTISD facilities. Passage of the measure: • Saves LTYA money on rent by expanding its own field space for existing soccer, baseball and football programs. FACT: LTYA’s Field of Dreams has archaic lighting, no plumbing and dilapidated and inadequate parking capacity. Passage of the measure: Enables significant upgrades at the new fields such as energy efficient lighting, water- saving irrigation technology, a lightning detection system plus plumbing, bathrooms and spacious paved parking lots.
