OCTOBER Trinity Lutheran Church 2163 Mayhew Lake Rd. NE

Sauk Rapids, MN 56379 “Sharing the Caring Christ with all People” A Prince of Peace Lutheran School Association Church and a Good Shepherd Community Congregation Sunday Services: 8:00am & 10:30am Sunday School for All Ages: 9:15am (September—May) Sunday Radio Broadcast at 8:00am on WVAL 800 on the AM dial and streaming live on the internet at www.800wval.com Trinity’s Website: www.trinitysr.org Best Practices in Ministry What is Best Practices for Ministry Conference (BPM)? In 2016 seven individuals from Trinity attended this yearly conference and believe me, we all can’t wait to go again! A few facts about the conference: It is NOT just for pastors and called staff – it is for everyone! This year was the sixth consecutive year for the conference. It is hosted by one church – Christ Church-Lutheran (LCMS) in Phoenix. (And they have the gift of hospitality down to an art!) It has grown from 450 attendees the first year to 2,200 this year. In 2016 there were 155 interest sessions and this year 350+! All you need to do is get there and have a place to stay – there is no cost for the conference or meals. All the interest session leaders are volunteers – they have come at their own expense to share what God has placed on their heart. It is hard to describe the feeling of being there with fellow believers to love, serve and encourage one another. You are picked up at your hotel by church shuttle buses. When you arrive at the church you are greeted by everyone – like the best family reunions ever – they are so glad you are there! Food is everywhere – continental breakfast with plenty of coffee, tasty lunches and wonderful evening meals. It’s hard to describe how organized the conference is, but 2000+ people are always fed promptly and with delicious entrees. The days are full of interest sessions, keynote speakers and more food – at breaks between sessions you are greeted by the beautiful Arizona sunshine and the gracious volunteers handing out Haagen-Dazs bars, pretzels and other snacks. And if you happen to miss them (which is next to impossible) you just wander over to the concessions stand to get what you want. The speakers are inspiring and you will be able to learn and take away new opportunities to serve the Lord in your church and community. The only regret is you can attend 8 sessions (out of 350+) which is why you’ll want to go back every year! You worship together, sing together and pray together. There is a prayer team that prays constantly for all attendees and the prayer requests that have been submitted. We are working with Trinity’s leadership team to see if there are funds available to help individuals with hotel and airfare costs. Previous Trinity members who have attended BPM are Pastor Paul and Nancy, Jennifer and Terry Kurash, John and Jennifer Sprengler and Joanne Keck. A verse that sums up these three special days is Acts 4:23 ESV – “Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common.” The Christian church at its best. If any of this sounds interesting to you contact any member of Trinity’s Best Practices for Ministry group and mark your calendars for February 22-24, 2018 …..you will be blessed! Submitted by past BPM-ers.

DCO CORNER A Ministry of Mercy There are many needs in our community! I get calls every week from people asking for help. These needs give us the opportunity to be merciful by putting our faith in action. Our guidelines for social ministry: We assist both members and nonmembers in our community. We never assist with cash, for any reason, but work directly with vendors, landlords, pharmacists, utility companies and use a variety of gift cards. Our social ministry financial assistance is usually for a one-time emergency as we try not to create a relationship of dependence. We can do a few things from our own social ministry fund but most of our assistance involves making referrals to social ministry agencies in the community. Trinity’s social ministry resources: Non-perishable food shelf, gas vouchers, bus cards, greyhound bus tickets, hotel (if all shelters are full), diapers, formula and prescriptions. If you would like to contribute to our social ministry fund you can make checks payable to: Trinity Lutheran Church and in the memo, note: “Social Ministry”. You can put checks in the offering plate or leave them in the church office. Community referrals: Community meals and shelter at Place of Hope and Salvation Army; Project Heal for medical needs; United Way 211 for a “first call for help”; Good Samaritan Fund for help with damage deposits; rent and car repairs; Tri-Cap for energy assistance; Catholic Charities for financial counseling; Faith in Action for minor household repairs, transportation and housekeeping; Community Furniture Program which gathers, stores and distributes used furniture. Our mission statement says that we “Share the Caring Christ with All People”. Our social ministry program is one way we can show mercy to others. However, we are to witness in both deed and word. Helping someone financially is a good thing to do but it is not all we are to do. In Romans 10:17 St. Paul says, “Consequently faith comes from hearing the message”. Often, when I am assisting others they are usually open to God’s Word. I have shared Bibles, tracts, Portals of Prayer and Project Connect Booklets from the rack in our lobby. I have also had opportunities to invite people to worship and to pray with them. Our social ministry program is an avenue for us to live out our faith and love and serve our neighbor by putting our faith in action. Don’t hesitate to encourage people you know to call me at the church to see if we can be of some assistance to those that are in need. “And the King will answer them, ‘I tell you the truth, anything you did for one of My brothers here, even the least important of them, you did for Me.’ (Matthew 25:40)

Music and Worship Notes Our God He Is a Castle Strong As we celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation, we dig a bit deeper into the happenings surrounding the pounding of the 95 theses into the Castle Church door on All Saint’s Eve 1517. A good resource for this process is online at Reformation 2017: https://lutheranreformation.org/ This is a site sponsored by the Lutheran Church Extension Fund, The LCMS, and Thrivent Financial Foundation. It is a treasure trove of information on all things Reformation! The logo is a pictorial image that illustrates the “Luther Rose” from Luther’s seal or coat of arms and at the center is Jesus Christ and Him crucified. Jesus is the center and Rock of our faith. He has been since He came to Earth in the flesh, and He still is today. The word “still” bears witness to the ever and ongoing relevance of this one, saving truth for sinners. In volume 53 of Luther’s Works I discovered our beloved “Battle Hymn of the Reformation” originally had a title sounding a bit different from ours. Scholars have concluded that Our God He Is a Castle Strong (A Mighty Fortress is Our God) was penned between 1521-1530 as this was a time of great turmoil in Luther’s personal life, the life of the Church and the political climate. This hymn more than any other epitomizes Luther’s thoughts and personal experiences. It was not written to express his own feelings, but to interpret and apply the 46th Psalm to the church of his own time and its struggles and serve his fellow believers. The value of the melody for Our God He Is a Castle Strong (tune- Ein Feste Burg) consists not in its absolute originality (it is reminiscent of some of his earlier hymn tunes) but in its basic integrity and strength. This is no patchwork of bits and pieces taken from here and there, but a masterpiece of musical expression. The melody reflects not only the general mood of the text, but gives strong rhythmical emphasis to the important words. (LW 53: 283-284) October is going to be busy month at Trinity. We will recognize the LWML on the 1 st. We will be transitioning from Pastor Paul Cloeter (Retirement Celebration October 8th) to Pastor David Hinz (Installation Service October 22nd) with a four-week interim with guest Pastors. On the 22nd we will have a Mission Festival with Missionary Bernie Lutz in the morning worship services and Pastor Hinz’s Installation Service in the afternoon. On the 29th we celebrate Reformation Sunday and welcome Pastor Hinz as officiates and preaches at his first service at Trinity as our new Pastor.

With these important events in the life of our church, we need singers and ringers! Please watch for opportunities in your bulletin or contact Daniel and Ruth for more information. “Regardless of how terrified the Christian is by the Law and how much he acknowledges his sin, he does not despair; for he believes in Christ into whom he has been baptized and through whom he has the forgiveness of sins. Now if our sin has been forgiven through Christ Himself...we have become free by the deliverance of the Son.” LW 26:447

Trinity has recently received an email from LCEF stating that as of Sept 30th we will be dropping to the second tier of the Shared Blessings Program. That equals about $200 a month decrease in the rebate amount we will receive. Would you please consider becoming an investor so that we may maintain our numbers? Transfer the Blessings Webster’s Dictionary defines “endowment” as “funds or property donated to an institution, individual or group to produce income.” For Trinity, that income can mean the difference between just “getting by” and the security of bringing our congregation’s mission and vision to life for generations to come. Trinity’s endowment monies are invested with Lutheran Church Missouri Synod’s Foundation. The foundation invests the funds for growth using a balanced portfolio. Yearly disbursements from the fund can be up to 5% of the balance of the year end (12/31/17) statement. In years when the investment return in the fund exceeds that percentage, the fund grows. This growth permits distributions in other years when market performance is poor. The ability to make regular annual distributions in spite of market performance, we believe, supports a more active endowment program and commitment to giving. “Proposal for Use of the Endowment Funds” applications are available online and in the church office. Applications must be submitted to the Endowment Committee by March 15th. The Endowment Committee will make recommendations to the congregation at a March or April Voter’s meeting – with a final decision by May 1st. There is one designated fund in the endowment – the Schmidt Scholarship Fund. The principal amount of this scholarship fund is available for individuals entering any of our synodical education institutions. Application forms are available online or in the church office and can be completed and turned in at any time. If you have any questions about Trinity’s Transfer the Blessings endowment, please contact one of the committee members.

Every member can give according to his or her ability. Information and confidential consultation about planned giving options can be obtained by contacting Mr. David Priebe, retired business attorney (612)508-4640. David is a Gift Planning Counselor for the MN North District - LCMS. 7
