Oliver family: Many to blame for death By The Associated Press LOS ANGELES — The wife and sons of former San Diego Chargers defensive back Paul Oliver sued the NFL SPORTS for wrongful NOTEBOOK death, blaming sports-related concussions for his suicide last year. The suit was filed Monday in Los Angeles County Superior Court against the league, the Chargers, the New Orleans Saints and the corporations that own several helmet manufacturers. It also alleges fraud and negligence. It says that Oliver, 29, shot himself to death in front of his wife, Chelsea, and two sons last September at his home in Marietta, Georgia, about 20 miles northwest of Atlanta. The suit alleges that his death was a “direct result of the injuries, depression and emotional suffering caused by repetitive head trauma and concussions suffered as a result of playing football, not properly appreciating football’s risks with respect to head trauma” and using defective helmets. Emmert: Schools handle DA KANSAS CITY, Mo. — NCAA president Mark Emmert believes it’s the responsibility of individual schools to handle issues of domestic violence and sexual assault, and that a spate of recent cases reflect greater societal problems. “If a student-athlete engages in bad behavior, they have to be subject to the same standards of conduct as everyone else,” Emmert told reporters before delivering

a lecture at Kansas City’s Rockhurst University about the future of college sports. White picked to succeed Dunn Stephanie White was the perfect fit to coach the Indiana Fever. After all, the Indiana native has virtually spent her whole life in the Hoosier state. White was officially announced as the team’s new coach Tuesday, taking over for Lin Dunn, who retired after the team was eliminated in the Eastern Conference finals. White won Indiana Miss Basketball honors at Seeger and then went on to help Purdue win a national championship in 1999. She was on the original Fever team and spent the last four years as an assistant for the franchise. Student: Bironas chased car NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A college student told a 911 dispatcher that a man he later identified as Rob Bironas chased him and his friends, then tried to hit their pickup truck minutes before the former Titans kicker’s fatal crash. Metro Nashville Police Department released copies of two 911 calls. One call was made by Bironas’ wife reporting him missing at 11:40 p.m. on Sept. 20. The second was from Belmont University student Connor Fraley at 10:45 p.m. while being chased by Bironas, who was driving a white SUV. Bironas, 36, crashed his white 2009 GMC Yukon Denali just after 11 p.m. Sept. 20. Police said he was speeding as he lost control in a curve and overturned his vehicle.

Ranger (Concluded from Page 27) She’s “always singing and cracking jokes,” Bolte revealed, and “funny; crazy sometimes,” Giesler added. She’ll occasionally carry on conversations in a singsong voice. As a coping mechanism for stressful situations — and sometimes for no good reason — Lange will occasionally burst into song, belting out the first tune that pops into her head. When the Rangers sweat through volleyball conditioning, Lange’s the one who bellows “I looooove this!” throughout Buechler Arena to simultaneously inject some sarcastic humor and subtle motivation. Even though her latest surgery curbed her club volleyball season — which, in turn, dimmed her profile to college coaches — schools like Butler, Ball State, Indiana State and Miami (Ohio) are possibilities for Lange, who’s still undecided about playing basketball this season as she weighs options about a possible

volleyball future. She’s waiting to discover that perfect fit with a college program, which can also be the outlet of energy for a girl who can’t sit idle for too long in the summer without getting up and going for a swim or wrangling up friends to play sand volleyball for an hour or two. “That’s why my parents are like, ‘maybe you should play in college,’ because when I’m just sitting around, I’m just like, ‘Oh my gosh, I want to go be doing something,’” said Lange, who started nervously shaking her legs at the mere mention of inactivity. Back up, back moving. Lange knows only that mode. “She’s handled it with grace,” Giesler said of Lange and her injuries. “Her personality is a big part of that. She’s not going to sit and whine about it. She’s going to get up and go.”
