One Minute After Death Aaron Brockett | Hebrews 9:27-28

What you believe about death and eternity will determine how you currently live.

Physical life is moving past us quickly.

… What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.

James 4:14 (ESV)

Physical death is certain.

And just as it is appointed for man to die once …

Hebrews 9:27 (ESV)

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:23 (ESV)

Physical death is final.

He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces …

Isaiah 25:8 (ESV)

When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 1 Corinthians 15:54-55 (ESV)

The soul and the body separate.

For we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this tent we groan, longing to put on our heavenly dwelling, … 2 Corinthians 5:1-2 (ESV)

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” John 11:25-26 (ESV)

Our soul then goes to a specific, conscious existence.

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. 1 Thessalonians 4:13 (ESV)

the present or intermediate heaven

the eternal Heaven or the new earth

Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven had passed away …

You will face judgment.

Revelation 21:1 (ESV)

And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, …

Hebrews 9:27 (ESV)

the judgment of faith

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:8-10 (ESV)

the great white throne judgment

Then I saw a great white throne and Him who was seated on it. From His presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. Revelation 20:11-12 (ESV)

the judgment of works

… For we will all stand before the judgment seat of God; for it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” So then each of us will give an account of himself to God. Romans 14:10-12 (ESV)

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil. 2 Corinthians 5:10 (ESV)

bema, “to step up”

Imperishable/Incorruptible Crown: those who strive to mature in Christ

Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. 1 Corinthians 9:25 (ESV)

Crown of Righteousness: this world is not my home

Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved His appearing. 2 Timothy 4:8 (ESV)

Crown of Rejoicing: leading others to Jesus

For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting before our Lord Jesus at His coming? Is it not you? For you are our glory and joy. 1 Thessalonians 2:19 (ESV)

Crown of Glory: faithfully and eagerly shepherding others

And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

1 Peter 5:4 (ESV)

Crown of Life: enduring trials, hardships, difficulty, even death for the sake of Christ

Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love Him. James 1:12 (ESV)

… each one’s work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. 1 Corinthians 3:13-15 (ESV)

In Jesus, you can have hope for one minute after death.

… so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for Him. Hebrews 9:28 (ESV)

[Absolutely nothing] will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:38-39 (ESV)
