1/3 cup melted butter 1/2 cup milk 1 cup white sugar 2 tablespoons grated lemon zest 3 tablespoons lemon juice 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 2 eggs 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries 1-1/2 cups all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 cup white sugar 1 teaspoon salt Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly grease an 8x4 inch loaf pan. In a mixing bowl, beat together butter, 1 cup sugar, juice and eggs. Combine flour, baking powder and salt; stir into egg mixture alternately with milk. Fold in lemon zest, nuts and blueberries. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake in preheated oven for 60 to 70 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into center of the loaf comes out clean. Cool bread in pan for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, combine lemon juice and 1/4 cup sugar in a small bowl. Remove bread from pan and drizzle with glaze. Cool on a wire rack. Veronica Cavella Q.: I spent a summer in China and lived across from a hospital. It was always busy, but I noticed that on a few days there were lines of patients out the door. I asked my Chinese friend about it and he said they were there to get a special treatment given on specific days to treat winter diseases in the summer. Is that treatment done here, and what does it involve? A.: Your friend was talking about a traditional treatment in Chinese Medicine called Dong Xia Bing Zhi, and he was correct in saying that it treats during hot weather diseases which occur, or are worse, during cold weather. These would include respiratory diseases such as asthma, frequent common colds, seasonal allergies, bronchitis, pneumonia, chronic cough, and wheezing. Some other chronic disorders which are considered to be of a cold nature like some types of poor digestion, or arthritis pain worsened by cold, can also benefit from this treatment. Anyone with a weak constitution may benefit as well. This unique traditional treatment is conducted over 3 or 4 days in summer that are determined based on the Daoist Astrological calendar, and predicted to be the hottest days of the year, the San Fu, the proverbial “dog days of summer”. You may ask how can these days be predicted way in advance, and I would compare these predictions to our own “Farmer’s Almanac” which is reported to be an amazing 80% accurate! No needles are used in this treatment which make it particularly attractive to some, and usually makes it more acceptable to children. Instead several Chinese herbs are combined and ground into a powder. The herbs chosen may vary, but will be of a warming and pungent nature. The powdered herbs will then be mixed with a liquid to form a paste. Sometimes just water is added, but I prefer fresh organic ginger juice which I can prepare as needed. Then a small dab of the herbal paste will be applied to a few acupuncture points selected to treat the patient’s complaint, and the paste will be secured in place with some surgical tape. Because of the warm, even hot, nature of the herbs used, the patient must pay attention to how he is reacting as a burn can result if let go too long. Parents will need to monitor a child and remove the poultice if the child complains of any discomfort or if excessive redness occurs. It is normal for the treated area to become pink, but this will soon fade. This method of treatment is an ancient tradition, not often used outside of China and not always taught in Acupuncture schools here
