Barwick(Jan22,2015) At the regular scheduled council meeting (Tuesday, Jan 20) the second reading was held and a Vicious Dog ordinance was passed with no comment from the public. This ordinance takes effect immediately . In order for a dog to be classified as a vicious dog ,it must be determined by a Dog control person. The council also started the process to purchase a backup generator for the water system and fire station, it is expected to be operational before hurricane season this year. Quitman Camellia ShowThe camellia show will be held on February 7th & 8th at the Brooks Co. Agriculture Building and Annex located on the corner of Courtland and N. Washington St. For out of town visitors the address is, 403 E. Courtland Ave. The blooms will be placed and judged Saturday morning for all participants. The public is welcome to attend after lunch on both Saturday and Sunday to view the blooms and winners. Many thanks to the corporate sponsors who help underwrite the costs in conjunction with honorariums, memorials, and private donations. The Quitman Camellia Show is one of the largest in the nation and many participants and spectators local, state-wide and around the country look forward to this event every year. Donations are still being accepted as well as additional sponsors. More volunteers are also needed to help as clerks and to help take down the show on Sunday. Brooks County was recently represented by four Brooks County 4-H members, at pigs shows held in Perry, GA. Blake Huffmaster (son of Eric & Terrie Huffmaster), Luke Hylton (son of Jason & Kristi Hylton), and Rylee and Josey Hollifield (daughters of Brian & Stephanie Hollifield) competed January 9th – January 11th at the Georgia Farm Credit Winter Pig Classic and Georgia Junior Swine Booster/Sunglo Futurity. Luke also competed January 11th in the Georgia Bred Show. There was over 1,000 pigs competing in these shows and several hundred exhibitors. Blake placed in three different weight classes, receiving a 3rd, 4th, and 9th placement in various weight classes. Luke, participating in his first pig show, also placed 5th in weight class. Brooks County 4-H is proud of these 4-Her’s and their accomplishments. #0301

Through Walk Georgia, University of Georgia Extension’s Brooks County office invites you to spend 12 weeks increasing your physical activity level in a fun, community-oriented way. The goal is to be active, whether you’re walking, biking or dancing. “We hope that participants will start being active if they aren’t already, and then continue to maintain physical activity when the 12-week period ends,” said Stephanie Hollifield, Brooks County Extension agent. “We hope the program will be a lifestyle change that will improve participants’ quality of life.” Walk Georgia is an online program where you can log your exercise. The aerobics class during your lunch break counts, and so does a walk with your dog or a pick-up game of basketball at Veterans Park. Using a dropdown menu including more than 70 physical activity options, you can record your daily movement and exercise. Walk Georgia is a statewide program, so someone here in Quitman could challenge her cousin in Canton and her brother in Savannah to a Walk Georgia contest. Create a group through the program, set mutual goals and get moving! Further, the program works well in schools, facilitating competition between classes and instilling lifelong, healthy habits in youth. Walk Georgia can also be used in the workplace as part of a worksite wellness program. Incentives are available; contact your county office or email

“Papa,” he asked in the innocent voice of a four-year-old, “how long will it take you to forget something?” Puzzled and intrigued, I responded, “Well, Keller, I’m not sure. Sometimes I forget right away and sometimes I think about things for a long, long time.” Just as puzzled and intrigued as I was, he then asked, “When you were a little boy did you ever break something and hide it? And when your Papa found it and got mad how long did it take him to forget that you broke something?” “Oh my, Keller, I’m not sure I remember. Did something go wrong?” I asked. “I broke Nonie’s cup and hid it under the bed and I want her to forget about it and not be mad at me,” came his answer. David was aware that his sin had damaged his relationship with God. He sensed God’s displeasure with him and his feelings of guilt overwhelmed him and added to his problem. He knew why God “hid His face” from him. But those feelings changed. Why? He repented, cried for God’s mercy and knew that he was forgiven. When he had God’s mercy he said, “You turned my wailing into dancing...and I will give You thanks forever.” We all have experiences like Keller and David. It’s Rodeo Time
J2 Rodeo Arena has been chosen as one of the arenas in the state of Georgia to host a Georgia High School Rodeo. The rodeo will take place on February 27th and 28th. MAN-PLEASING CHICKEN~ AKA WORLD’S BEST CHICKEN!! Chicken thighs- 1 package, about 6-8 (Can also use breasts, but not as tender & juicy) Dijon mustard- 1/2 cup Maple syrup- 1/4 cup (I would use sugar free and sweeten it with Stevia) Rice/rice wine vinegar- 1 tablespoon Fresh rosemary Salt and pepper Method To make this chicken, which you should absolutely do immediately, preheat your oven to 450ºF (230 C I think this seems very high and would reduce it to 200 c). Then, mix together 1/2 cup of Dijon mustard, 1/4 cup of maple syrup, and 1 tablespoon of rice/rice wine vinegar. Put a 1.5 pound package of chicken thighs into a foil-lined, oven-proof baking dish. I used boneless, skinless thighs. Six came in my package, which made enough to serve 3 people. Then, salt and pepper the thighs. Pour your maple mustard mixture over them, turning the thighs in the mixture so they are fully coated. Put the chicken thighs into the oven, and let them bake for 40 minutes or until a meat thermometer reads 165ºF. Baste the tops of the chicken with more sauce half way through. I find that a meat thermometer is essential in cooking because it allows me to check for doneness without cutting into the meat and losing its precious juices. Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes before serving. Plate the chicken, making sure to spoon some extra sauce over the top. Sprinkle over some fresh rosemary.
