PASTORAL PRAYER

THE LORD’S PRAYER #895 - United Methodist Hymnal SCRIPTURE LESSON: John 12:20-33 Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor. “Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say—‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.” The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.” Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not for mine. Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

Liturgist: The word of God, for the people of God. People: Thanks be to God.

FREDERICK L. ASKHAM FRED ASKHAM, of Oceanside, CA, peacefully departed this life on March 9, 2015, from natural causes. Fred was the son of Frederick A. and Mary DeMouth Askham of Warwick NY. He was Warwick High School valedictorian, and earned a B.S. in Chemistry at Drew University and M.S. in Chemistry from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. He served his country honorably in World War II as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps. Fred married Jean McLuckie in 1946 and they enjoyed a happy and fruitful life together for 54 years. They made their homes in Madison, NJ, Wayne NJ, Penfield, NY, and Fullerton, CA. Fred started his career as a bench chemist, and then joined the Pfaudler Company as a sales representative for their glass-lined steel reactors. During his 33 years there, he rose to become national sales manager, and then international marketing manager. His work took him to travel the world, and Fred and Jean also traveled for pleasure to Egypt, Kenya, Thailand, Hawaii, Japan, Australia, and all over Europe. Their trips to London and Venice were especially romantic and memorable. Fred had a lifelong passion for building and flying radio-controlled model airplanes. In retirement he served as a volunteer and supporter of many organizations, most notably for the food pantry at Pathways of Hope for over 20 years. In 2004 Fred married Mildred Sudman Stewart, who enriched his life for the next 10 years. In addition to his wife Millie, Fred is survived by a loving family that includes his daughter Barbara Jean Askham of Oceanside, CA; his son and daughter-in-law, Fredric and Jane Askham; and their children, Frederic and Mary Jean, of Loveland, CO. Fred was a generous and humorous man who was also well loved and will be long remembered by many great friends. He was preceded in death by his first wife Jean Askham, his sister Marian, and his brothers Lewis and Jack Askham. The family wishes to thank the good people of Aegis at Shadowridge and Ardent Hospice for their excellent care during Fred’s last months. The memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 14, at 11 a.m. at The United Methodist Church of Vista, 490 South Melrose Drive, Vista, CA. Friends wishing to make a memorial contribution are asked to direct their gifts to Pathways of Hope, P.O. Box 6326, Fullerton, CA 92834.
