W

elcome to worship at First Baptist. We are so glad that you have joined us today. From the heart of downtown Knoxville, we are touching lives around the world, sharing the ministry and life of Jesus Christ. If you need further information about our church, or desire a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, our ministers will be available following the service at each exit. Please prepare for worship by:  Silencing cell phones, pagers and PDAs.  Encouraging children five years old and older to worship using the printed supplements available from ushers.  Taking advantage of our Preschool Extended Session designed specifically for children age 3 and under. Pagers are provided to communicate with parents in case of emergency. Children age 4 years 1st grade may attend Passage, our children’s worship experience, after the children’s sermon, or remain with their parents in the service.  Noting that restrooms are located directly behind the choir loft. Becoming a Member You are welcome and encouraged to come to the front of the church to meet with a minister during the Hymn of Response to request baptism or to join the church. If you are not ready to do this, please complete the information in the tear-off portion of this worship folder and place it in the offering plate and a minister will contact you this week. Or, you may simply call the church office to request an appointment with any minister. Continue the Experience Check your local television provider’s guide for information about the rebroadcast of today’s worship service. The worship service is available on DVD and can be obtained by calling the church office. The message for today’s worship service will also be available later this week online at www.fbcknox.org.

Life of the Church continued… Sticky Faith for Parents SHEDULE CHANGE! At First Baptist we believe family is the primary locus of faith formation; our desire is to come alongside parents and families as they raise their children to be all God is calling them to become. To that end, we are offering an opportunity for parents in our congregation to come alongside one another to learn and share together. For five sessions through personal, real-world experiences of research and sharing, The Sticky Faith Parent Curriculum presents powerful strategies and practical ideas, enabling you to impart a deep lasting faith in your children. The group will meet five Sunday afternoons from 4-6 pm (November 9, November 23, November 30, December 7, and December 14). Sign up to participate in the welcome center, youth suite, children's floor, or preschool floor, or by emailing Kim Pieratt ([email protected]). There is no cost to participate

Morning Scripture Psalm 32:1-7 Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. 2 Happy are those to whom the Lord imputes no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. 3 While I kept silence, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long. 4 For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Selah 5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not hide my iniquity; I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,” and you forgave the guilt of my sin. Selah 6 Therefore let all who are faithful offer prayer to you; at a time of distress, the rush of mighty waters shall not reach them. 7 You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with glad cries of deliverance. Selah

First Baptist Church of Knoxville

Wendell Boertje Merciful God, We confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. In your mercy forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Holy Name, through Christ, our Lord.

Wendell Boertje God’s Word assure us: “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” In humility and faith let us confess our sin to God.

The Life of the Church

“Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.”

13

Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.

Youth Fall Retreat 2014 October 31- November 2, Walden Lodge We return to Walden Lodge October 31-November 2 for one of the most popular Youth Ministry events of the year! Our Fall Retreat theme this year is STUCK. We'll look together at the negative connotations of being stuck (difficult questions & circumstances) and the positive connotations (perseverance & dedication). Scripture has a lot to teach Christ-followers about being STUCK! We'll also have our annual Youth Ministry @ 1B film festival, other fun activities, awesome food, great worship, and more! Fall Retreat is $75 per person. As always, financial assistance is available as needed! All forms and fees are due by October 22. Hard copies of forms are available in the youth suite & digital copies are available at http://www.fbcknox.org/youth/events/. Surviving the Holidays Sunday, November 2, at 3:30 pm It is hard to believe, but the holidays are fast approaching. As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, Christmas, and a New Year, it is sometimes a difficult season for those who have lost loved ones. Instead of looking forward to the holidays, you may be dreading them. There is help. On Sunday, November 2, at 3:30 pm, we will offer Surviving the Holidays with practical ways to help you through those difficult days. There will be video, discussion, and everyone will receive a 30-day devotional to take home with you to use during the holidays. No matter how long since you have suffered a personal loss, Surviving the Holidays can help you. To sign up, contact Pam at [email protected] or call the church. Join us for Surviving the Holidays. We Need Help We have several children and youth across our city that would like to be at church but who do not have a way to get here. Would you be willing to help pick up and/or drop off children or youth on Sunday mornings? If so, please let Tom know at [email protected].
