“Other Assigned Duties” Aabha Mantri Plenty of people can agree that teachers play a significant role in the life of a student. They are a source of guidance and motivation. During high school especially, students need a mentor by their side to help them when they are making decisions or going through hard times. When teachers sign their contract, they not only agree to teach their content areas but also to perform "other assigned duties." Those other duties include things such as being a coach, conducting meetings, and organizing events. They can additionally include supporting a food pantry so that kids can have food and giving up time with their own children so that others know that there is someone who cares for them. However, it also includes attending funerals of past students. None so recent as last week, when our campus entered a state of mourning for one of our own. The teachers and faculty members at Northeast Lauderdale High have always been there to support students. They make sure students understand lessons and also make them feel comfortable in the learning environment. They also make sure students know that there is always someone there for assistance and guidance. In the light of recent events at this school, we need to come together and support one another. The passing of David Gowdy and Hunter Garrett has significantly affected both students and teachers on campus and in the community. This is when teachers must implement their "other assigned duties". They help students cope with the losses and help them slowly recover, while also processing their own emotions and grief. Northeast has always had a family environment, and it is during this time where we lean on each other and support those around us.

Spreading Hope, Giving Joy Daneel Konnar Christmas trees, Santa Claus, and presents are all well and good. The celebrations take place everywhere around the world: From schools to corporate offices to homes, Christmas is a holiday where family members, students, and co-workers all come together. With different ethnicities and cultural backgrounds globally, the tradition is rather different from what the United States experiences. The Jewish tradition (Hanukkah) involves lighting 7 candles after Christmas day. Families traditionally light the candle, discuss the importance of the candle, and telling a short folktale about the candle. Catholics enjoy attending mass as a family and participating in a small volunteer/community service project. Katherine Craig, Northeast High School’s athletic trainer, says her family traditions with Christmas are something she loves participating in during the holiday season. “Normally, we have more traditions on Christmas eve. We always bake sugar cookies and decorate them and order pizza. We usually read the Christmas story and gather at my mom’s house. Also, I always like Christmas decorations. I am a big Christmas ornament collector, so that definitely contributes to my liking of Christmas decorations and the holiday spirit.” The holiday season is the best time to come together with family and celebrate all the traditional festivities. With Christmas break and the New Year ahead, we hope our Trojan Family enjoys their break and holiday season. We’ll see you back in January!

Baby It’s Cold Outside! Should students wear any type of jacket? Jayla Smith Any Jacket: Students should be allowed to wear any color jacket due to colorful jackets sometimes being cheaper than school colored jackets. With a jacket policy, students can not express themselves or wear brands they support. With the jacket policy, students can only wear jackets with logos less than 2 inches. Why should it matter if a student has an 8 inch Nike or 2 inch Under Armour sign? It should not. Students should be allowed to wear the preferred jacket of their choice. School Policy Jackets: Students should have to wear school policy jackets because this maintains order. Another reason students should have to wear school policy jackets is because without a policy, some students will wear inappropriate jackets or distracting bright colored jackets. Students might even start a fight if somebody is wearing a jacket with a sports team or college they do not like. With the jacket policy, all students are alike and there is not a reason to start a conflict.
