Our mission: As followers of Christ, we share the beauty and power of God’s transforming love through worship, community, and service in the world. THIS WEEK WE LIFT UP... THE BISHOP’S VISIT. Begun in 1785, the Episcopal Diocese of Delaware is one of the nine original dioceses of the Episcopal Church in the United States. The Rt. Rev. Wayne P. Wright was elected the 10th Bishop of Delaware in 1998. The ministry of a bishop is apostolic—to represent Christ and his Church while serving as the chief priest and pastor of the Diocese. Bishop Wright visits our parish every spring to lead us in worship and to confirm and receive new members to The Episcopal Church; he visits our preschool each fall. Bishop Wright recently announced his intent to retire early in 2017, so we welcome him as our preacher this morning for his last visitation at the 10 AM Confirmation service. For more information about Bishop Wright and the Diocese of Delaware, please visit www.dioceseofdelaware.net or call the Diocesan Office at (302) 256-0374. 8:00 AM 9:15 AM 10:00 AM 11:30 AM 12:00 PM 4:00 PM 5:00 PM

THE FIRST READING: PROVERBS 8:1-4, 22-31 Does not wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights, beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries out: “To you, O people, I call, and my cry is to all that live. The Lord created me at the beginning of his work, the first of his acts of long ago. Ages ago I was set up, at the first, before the beginning of the earth. When there were no depths I was brought forth, when there were no springs abounding with water. Before the mountains had been shaped, before the hills, I was brought forth—when he had not yet made earth and fields, or the world’s first bits of soil. When he established the heavens, I was there, when he drew a circle on the face of the deep, when he made firm the skies above, when he established the fountains of the deep, when he assigned to the sea its limit, so that the waters might not transgress his command, when he marked out the foundations of the earth, then I was beside him, like a master worker; and I was daily his delight, rejoicing before him always, rejoicing in his inhabited world and delighting in the human race.” ____________________ THE HOLY GOSPEL: JOHN 16:12-15 Jesus said to his disciples, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.”

Proverbs 8:1-4, 22-31

Does not wisdom call, and does not understanding raise her voice? On the heights, beside the way, at the crossroads she takes her stand; beside the gates in front of the town, at the entrance of the portals she cries out: “To you, O people, I call, and my cry is to all that live. Psalm 8 The Second Reading

Chant: G. Woodward Romans 5:1-5

Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God. And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to us. As the Reading is concluded, the People reply, “Thanks be to God.”

Gradual Hymn 348 (as able, please stand)

The Holy Gospel

John 16:12-15

As the Gospel is announced, the People reply, “Glory to you, Lord Christ.” Jesus said to his disciples, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth; for he will not speak on his own, but will speak whatever he hears, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, because he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. For this reason I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.” As the Gospel is concluded, the People reply, “Praise to you, Lord Christ.”

Presentation and Examination of the Candidates Celebrant: Presenters: Celebrant: Candidates: Celebrant: Candidates:

The Candidates will now be presented. I present this person to be received into this Communion. I present these persons for Confirmation. Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil? I do. Do you renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? I do, and with God’s grace I will follow him as my Savior and Lord.

After all have been presented, the Celebrant addresses the congregation, saying:

People: Celebrant:

Will you who witness these vows do all in your power to support these persons in their life in Christ? We will. Let us join with those who are committing themselves to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant.

The Baptismal Covenant (as able, please stand) Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of the bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God’s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God’s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God’s help. Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself ? I will, with God’s help. Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God’s help.

Prayers for the Candidates The Celebrant then says to the congregation:

Let us now pray for these persons who have renewed their commitment to Christ. A person appointed leads the following petitions:

Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People: Leader: People:

By their names, Lord, know each one as your disciple and friend. Lord, hear our prayer. By their names, Lord, call them to serve you in the world. Lord, hear our prayer. Through this renewal, Lord, give them joy for life. Lord, hear our prayer. Through this renewal, Lord, keep them in your holy Church. Lord, hear our prayer. From this day forward, Lord, teach them to love others as you love us. Lord, hear our prayer. From this day forward, Lord, guide them on life’s journey. Lord, hear our prayer. In the end, Lord, bring them to the fullness of your peace and glory. Lord, hear our prayer.

The Celebrant says:

Almighty God, we thank you that by the death and resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ you have overcome sin and brought us to yourself, and that by the sealing of your Holy Spirit you have bound us to your service. Renew in these your servants the covenant you made with them at their Baptism. Send them forth in the power of that Spirit to perform the service you set before them; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Reception and Confirmation (please be seated) The Bishop lays hands upon each one and says:

N., we recognize you as a member of the one holy catholic and apostolic Church, and we receive you into the fellowship of this Communion. God, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless, preserve, and keep you. Amen. Strengthen, O Lord, your servant N. with your Holy Spirit; empower him/her for your service; and sustain him/ her all the days of his/her life. Amen. The Bishop concludes with this prayer:

Almighty and everliving God, let your fatherly hand ever be over these your servants; let your Holy Spirit ever be with them; and so lead them in the knowledge and obedience of your Word, that they may serve you in this life, and dwell with you in the life to come; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Peace (please stand and greet those nearby, sharing Christ’s peace) Bishop: People:

The peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you. Today’s loose plate offering will be given to the Bishop’s Discretionary Fund.

The Offertory

Anthem (please be seated)

John Ireland

Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it, for love is strong as death. Greater love hath no man than this: that a man lay down his life for his friends. Who, his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree. That we, being dead to sin should live unto righteousness. Ye are washed, ye are sanctified, ye are justified in the Name of the Lord Jesus. Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. That ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. I beseech you brethren, but the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.

The Great Thanksgiving

Prayer 3 from Enriching Our Worship

Celebrant: People: Celebrant: People: Celebrant: People:

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

The Celebrant proceeds:

All thanks and praise are yours at all times and in all places, our true and loving God; through Jesus Christ, your eternal Word, the Wisdom from on high by whom you created all things. You laid the foundations of the world and enclosed the sea when it burst out from the womb; You brought forth all creatures of the earth and gave breath to humankind. Wondrous are you, Holy One of Blessing, all you create is a sign of hope for our journey. And so as the morning stars sing your praises we join the heavenly beings and all creation as we sing with joy:

*Holy, Holy, Holy Lord

David Willcocks

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. The Celebrant continues:

Glory and honor are yours, Creator of all, your Word has never been silent; you called a people to yourself, as a light to the nations, you delivered them from bondage and led them to a land of promise. Of your grace, you gave Jesus to be human, to share our life, to proclaim the coming of your holy reign and give himself for us, a fragrant offering. Through Jesus Christ our Redeemer, you have freed us from sin, brought us into your life, reconciled us to you, and restored us to the glory you intend for us. We thank you that on the night before he died for us Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, gave it to his friends and said: “Take, eat, this is my Body, broken for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” After supper Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends and said: “Drink this, all of you: this cup is the new Covenant in my Blood, poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.” And so, remembering all that was done for us: the cross, the tomb, the resurrection and ascension, longing for Christ’s coming in glory, and presenting to you these gifts your earth has formed and human hands have made, we acclaim you, O Christ:

Celebrant and People:

Dying, you destroyed our death. Rising, you restored our life. Christ Jesus, come in glory! The Celebrant continues:

Send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon these gifts of bread and wine that they may be to us the Body and Blood of your Christ. Grant that we, burning with your Spirit’s power, may be a people of hope, justice, and love. Giver of Life, draw us together in the Body of Christ, and in the fullness of time gather us with all your people into the joy of our true eternal home. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, we worship you our God and Creator in voices of unending praise. The Celebrant and People together say:

Blessed are you now and for ever. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread *Alleluia, Christ our Passover (at the conclusion, please be seated)

David Willcocks Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us; therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!
