ZIMBABWE Country Facts •

1.1million HH face acute food insecurity.

76% of rural households live in poverty

63% of the population lives below the poverty datum line.

Zimbabwe is a landlocked country with a population of 13.8million people with a 2.2 percent rate of natural increase. The country was hit by an ElNino induced drought in 2017 and this resulted in 4.1million people being food insecure. Low-productivity agricultural practices and lack of access to markets are also affecting the food security of the vast majority of rural Zimbabweans, whose livelihoods depend on own production. Undernutrition rates are high, especially in rural districts where diets lack diversity – maize being the main staple – and are poor in essential nutrients.

According to the World Food Programme (2017), an estimated 63% of people live under the poverty datum line and face challenges accessing basic services. At least 20% of rural households still do not have access to improved safe water and 40% have no access to improved sanitation facilities.

Our Focus Our focus in Zimbabwe is to move 200 000 families out of poverty to a living income of US$2.48 per day per person. Reaching this per capita daily living income will ensure that our target communities are able to consume an ideal nutritious diet, afford decent accommodation, access basic services and be able to afford education for their children.
