Dear Grace Parents: The After School Enrichment Program will begin its winter session the week of January 29th. This season includes several exciting options covering a range of topics in 4 or 8-week sessions. Check out all class offerings described in this packet. PARENTS NEEDED! The Safe Practices Policy at Grace Lutheran Church and School requires that two adults be present whenever an instructor who is not a Grace teacher is working with students. For the Winter 2017 enrichment session, we could use help implementing this policy for several of the after school classes. If you are willing to accompany every session of your child’s enrichment class, we can offer a $40 discount off the class fee ($20 discount for a 4-week class). Active participation in the class is neither expected nor required. Please contact Eileen Maggio to confirm your discount before final payment. Enrichment classes fill up quickly! Classes will be filled on a first-come-first-serve basis. The registration deadline is Friday, January 26, 2017. Please make checks payable to Grace Lutheran School. Tuition is non-refundable, except if a class is cancelled due to insufficient registration. There will be no make-up classes due to student absences. After School Classes: Grades 1-8 MONDAY Art Club 101 Grades 3-8 In Art club, students are encouraged to express themselves freely through their medium of choice. There will be a plethora of art supplies on hand from drawing media to painting media, stencils, texture plates, and clay. This art class provides freedom of choice for the students’ size and subject that they want to work with. The instructor, Mr. K, is well-versed in almost all forms of fine-artistry and will provide ample examples and instruction throughout the course. Time: 3-4pm Dates: 1/29, 2/5, 2/12, 2/26, 3/5, 3/12, 3/19, 3/26 - NO CLASS 2/19 Instructor: Dan Kwarcinski Class Limits: Minimum 8 / Maximum 12 Fee: $80 TUESDAY Fungineering Grades 3-8 Students work in teams using LEGO® simple machine kits to learn about structures and forces, levers, wheels and axles, pulleys and gears! Then, they will bring their machines to life while exploring motors and energy. Time: 3-4pm Dates: 1/30, 2/6, 2/13, 2/20, 2/27, 3/6, 3/13, 3/20 Instructor: Computer Explorers Class Limits: Minimum 6 / Maximum 14 Fee: $90 TUESDAY Student and Parent Yoga (7 classes) Grades 2-4 Learn the basics of yoga in this eight week after school class to increase strength, flexibility and relaxation skills. Basic yoga postures and breathing patterns will be taught in a one hour class for second thru fourth graders in the Grace Lutheran Church Library. An atmosphere of friendly inquiry will be facilitated so participants can come away with a new understanding of how to move freely and confidently. No previous experience is necessary to participate. Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move. Bring a small blanket or large bath towel to use in class. WEDNESDAY Comedy Improv Workshop Grades 5-8 Ever wanted to give Comedy Improv a try? Now is your chance! This Improv Workshop will be a beginners course in Comedy Improv. We will discuss some of the foundational rules of Improv Comedy while learning and playing lots of fun improv games. No experience required! Time: 2:15-3:15pm Dates: 1/31, 2/7, 2/14, 2/21, 2/28, 3/7, 3/14, 3/21 Instructor: Mr. Marc Fillion, Youth Pastor at First Pres., River Forest Class Limits: Minimum 5 / Maximum 20 Fee: $50 WEDNESDAY Lights, Camera, Star Wars Grades 3-8 Do you want to be the next George Lucas? We will create our very own Star WarsTM movie using special digital movie making cameras and software. As directors and producers we will work in teams to create our own story and script, then film our own movie. We will use graphic editing techniques and stop motion animation, add background noise and music. All students will get a copy of their movie, after class is complete. WEDNESDAY LEGO S.T.E.M. Challenge (90 Minutes) Grades 1-4 Power up your engineering skills with Play-Well TEKnologies and tens of thousands of LEGO®! Apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as Catapults, Pneumatic Cranes, Arch Bridges, and Battletracks! Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a supportive environment. An experienced instructor will challenge new and returning students to engineer at the next level. Gears! Gears! Grades JK/SK Explore gears using LEGO®, as we work in teams of 2 and find out how gears help make the world turn. We’ll make projects that crank, mesh, pump, push, pull, tug or grind.
