Staff Faith Giebel, Director of Camp Unite and Sports Center Director. – I have been a part of the Dunwoody Baptist Church Sports Center since 1991. I have served as a ref, field worker, sports and family event coordinator, directed a variety of day camps, served as Associate Camp Unite Director and have coached many teams as well. I enjoy the fact that I get to work with such great families that are members of the church and the Dunwoody Community. It is my desire to make sure that the love of Jesus shines through me as I work with all these great families. I graduated with an Associate degree from Kennesaw Jr. College, BS in Recreation and Physical Education from GA Southern and have worked towards my Masters at VA Tech. I love working in the recreation field and have worked with the City of Cartersville & Marietta as Recreation Coordinators, taught tennis, and conducted a few camps of my own in different subdivisions. My camp experience consisted of overnight camp – Camp Toccoa and day camps such as Camp Bright Star and Sports Camps. Jane Hendrix, Dunwoody School for the Arts Director. Jane has been the director of DSA since 1993. Under her leadership the school added summer camps, an extended dance program and Kindermusik classes. There are private lessons in strings (violin, viola, cello and bass), percussion, guitar, piano and voice. Jane has a Bachelor’s of Music from Converse College and a Master’s of Music from Winthrop University. Toni Pouliot was named as the Preschool Camp Coordinator in January of 2013. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from The University of Maine at Farmington. She has been a professional teacher since the year of 2002 when she began as a developmental therapist. She became a teacher here at Dunwoody Baptist Preschool in 2008 as a lead young 5's teacher.

Lynn Sprang is back again this summer as Office Manager. She is the first point of contact with Camp Unite and is always here to assist parents either by phone, email, or in person in the camp office. Senior Counselors: Senior Counselors are 18 years of age and up with experience working with children in a camp setting. They go through a careful application and hiring process, followed by pre-camp training. All senior counselors are certified in First Aid and CPR and have studied child protection policies. Each group has at least one and most of the time two senior counselors. Junior Counselors: Junior Counselors are high school students between the ages of 15 and 17. They also have been through a careful application and hiring process and precamp training. Junior counselors work under the supervision of a senior counselor and provide assistance with camp activities. Each group has 2-3 junior counselors. Counselor in Training (CIT): CIT’s are 14 year old volunteers who assist the younger full day age groups and help out around campus. Early pick-up: If you need to pick your camper up early please contact the Camp Office (770.280.1220 or [email protected]) at least an hour prior so that we can have your child ready to go. You will pick-up in the camp office. Please DO NOT attempt to locate your child on your own. We do not want anyone roaming the campus without a visitor badge. This is for the safety of your child. Snack: Campers have a break time each morning and afternoon. They may bring their own snack or bring money for our snack bar at this time. You will put money in an account for him/her at check-in on Monday morning. Our staff will keep up with their balance. Campers will only be allowed to purchase one drink and one snack item (fruit, health bar, chips, candy, etc.) at each snack break. We are a peanut free camp. Lunch: Each camper should bring his/her lunch each day except Friday. On Fridays we will have a cookout with hamburgers or hot dogs, chips, lemonade/water, and cookie. If your child has a special diet they may choose to bring their lunch on this day. Dress Code: For comfort and safety, it is important that your child wear appropriate clothing for camp activities. Please send your child to camp in soft-soled, closed-toe athletic shoes. Sandals are only allowed on pool days to wear to and from the pool. Campers may get a little dirty and messy as they will play hard! Dress in clothes that are ok to get messy. We will do our best to keep them neat, but we will not reimburse for clothes stained by our art projects. Bathing suits should be appropriate for camp. One piece suits are preferred for girls and long trunks for boys. Camp Unite staff reserves the right to determine the appropriateness of bathing suits as well as slogans, pictures, etc. on clothing. Advertisements for alcohol or tobacco are not allowed. We expect parents to exercise good judgment in this regard. Personal Property Rules: Campers may bring their own sports equipment to camp when applicable to the specialty they are taking part in that week. However, staff will not be responsible for keeping up with these items. They should be labeled with the camper’s name. All cell phones, trading cards, fidget spinners, electronic items (games, iPod, iPad, etc.) are not allowed at camp. Camp staff reserves the right to add items to this list at any time if it becomes necessary. Any of these items listed above will be confiscated by camp staff. Lost and Found: Lost and found items will be placed in bins and be located at pick-up/drop off each day. Items not claimed at the end of the summer will be donated to charity.

Bible Study and Worship Content: Camp Unite, first and foremost, is a ministry of Dunwoody Baptist Church. Campers will participate in daily Bible study and worship times, whether in the classroom (2 year olds Rising 1st Graders), assembly or group time (Rising 2nd graders - 12 year olds). Content focuses on Christian behavior and is explored through lessons, stories, skits and songs. We strive to make our content kid and family friendly. Parents are welcome to take a look at our Bible study material – ask head staff for more information. Group Participation Policy: To qualify for enrollment and to remain enrolled, children in this program must be able to function in a group setting. We are not able to change the emphasis on group activities we have at our camp. We will try to meet the needs of each child as long as it does not require a change in our camp format. Camp Unite is not a special needs camp. Our staff is not trained to work with special needs campers. If your child has special needs, please discuss with our head staff whether Camp Unite is the right camp for your child. Visitors: If you, or someone authorized by you, wish to visit camp during the day, you must stop by the Camp Office upon your arrival. Please call ahead or email so that we can be expecting you. At the Camp Office, you will receive a visitor’s tag that must be worn during the duration of your visit. Any unknown adult not wearing a visitor tag may be identified as an intruder. Camper Release: Campers will be released only to people listed on your child’s registration that you have authorized to pick them up. If someone other than a parent is to pick up your child, please let us know in writing so we can add them to your list. We will ask them to show a picture I.D. This helps to ensure your child’s safety. Please communicate with head staff and provide proper documentation if a biological parent is not allowed to pick up the child. Proper Communication Channels: Parents are encouraged to get to know their child’s counselors. It is our goal to establish a strong bond between your family and our staff. If the need arises for you to address a concern that involves a counselor, please go through a member of the head staff. Please do not directly confront a counselor in the unlikely event that a grievance arises. It is also necessary to go through a member of head staff to address any concern you have about a Camper who is not your child, or if you have a dispute with another camp parent. Please do not confront campers or camp parents with a grievance. Doing so is considered grounds for immediate, nonrefundable nullification of your camp registration. These policies exist for your own protection, so that we may ensure that disputes are witnessed, mediated and properly documented and resolved.

Parent-Staff Relationship: Parents are responsible for keeping Camp Unite informed of any changes in enrollment information including changes in contact information or health information. Parents will receive weekly emails with important information concerning camp activities for that specific week. Please remember to check your email weekly. We value our camp families and look forward to building close relationships with you throughout the summer. Medication Management: If your child has medication that must be taken during the camp day, we must have a note with your child’s name, the name of the medication, the dosage, and the time it is to be administered. Medication should be turned in to staff at check in with your child’s name and the name of the medication clearly printed on the container. We understand that some medications, such as asthma inhalers or Epi-pens, must be kept readily available to the camper. Please make a note of this when you turn in the medication, and we will be sure that it is kept with your child’s senior counselor at all times. Please indicate all allergies and ongoing health issues on the Health Form. Head staff will administer over-the counter medication to your child for minor issues such as headache, stomach ache, etc., after having spoken to and received permission from a parent. Emergency transportation: In the event of a medical emergency, your child may be transported to the nearest hospital (from Camp this is Children’s Healthcare) in a Dunwoody Baptist Church or possibly private vehicle, belonging to a member of camp staff. Drivers of these vehicles have submitted their license and are insured by the church. In more critical emergencies, an ambulance may be called to the location of your child. In this case, your child will be transported to the nearest hospital. In either case, you will be notified immediately. If we are unable to reach you, we will call your designated emergency contact person. Illness/Injury notification: In the event of your child’s illness, we will contact you at the numbers you provide. We must have verbal consent from you before we can administer any medication such as Tylenol, etc. to your child. If your child suffers frequent headaches, or has other minor chronic ailments, you may keep a signed note on file with instructions for treatment so that we do not have to contact you each time. In the event of an injury, we will provide first aid at camp. If the injury consists of anything other than minor scrapes, cuts, or bruises, we will contact you for further instruction. In a severe emergency, we will begin treatment and arrange for transportation to a hospital whether or not we are able to reach you. For anything other than the most minor of injuries or illnesses, we will have a completed incident form for you to view and sign, and a copy of the same for you to take with you.

Exclusion of sick/contagious children: Camp Unite complies with state law that requires children who have an oral temperature of 100.1 degrees or higher, along with any other possibly contagious symptoms (rash, sore throat, vomiting) to be sent home. Please do not send your children to camp if you suspect he/she has any contagious illness. Cases of lice tend to rise during the summer, please check your child periodically for lice. Personal Safety: Camp Unite will make every effort possible to ensure the safety of each camper. Each head staff member and Senior Counselor will be certified in First Aid and CPR. Camper Rules: 1. Each camper is expected and encouraged to participate in all activities to the best of his/her ability, and maintain a positive attitude while doing so. 2. No camper is to leave the supervision of his or her counselor without expressed permission before leaving the group or activity. 3. Campers are not allowed to go into another person's clothing bag or lunch bag for any reason. 4. Foul language, profanity, or obscene gestures will not be permitted. Any such abuse will result in the calling of a child’s parents to report what language is being used, or a short session with the parent, child, and director at pickup time. 5. Name calling that is abusive, belittling, or downgrading will not be tolerated and will result in the loss of certain privileges during the camp programming time. 6. Physical violence will not be tolerated. Throwing rocks or foreign objects will not be permitted. 7. Any Camper who is constantly disruptive, or non-cooperative, or who fails to comply with the stated rules, will lose his/her privileges of field trips or programmed activities.

Behavior Management: Camp Unite does reserve the right to dismiss any camper without a monetary refund if he/she seems unable to adjust to the group experience. In the event that discipline is needed, our policy is that it will be carried out in a positive manner, in order to enhance the Campers' self-esteem and help develop self-control. The individual need of each camper will be taken into consideration in determining discipline procedures. If and when problems persist, parents will be called for a conference with the Camp Director. Please know that corporal punishment will not be used for any reason. We consider the process of camper discipline to be a partnership between the parents and our staff. We ask that parents would communicate to their children that the camp staff members are authority figures while they are at camp. In our experience, we’ve learned that when parents make this point in advance to their children, it aides in the prevention of discipline issues before they occur. We will strive to keep all parents informed about all but the most trivial infractions and we rely heavily upon parents to follow-up by disciplining the child at home when necessary.

Camp Unite operates with the sincere understanding that all children will likely commit some infraction from time to time, by simple virtue of the fact that they are children. We accept the responsibility to sufficiently document such infractions, and view any action taken on our part without proper documentation to be irresponsible and arbitrary. Nevertheless, habitual infractions that present a hazard to other campers or have the potential to create a breakdown in camp operation will be taken seriously and in a delicate manner. In such cases, this is not an act of judgment, but a determination that Camp Unite may not be a good fit for the child. The criteria by which we must consider disallowing further admittance to Camp, is as follows: 1. If the actions of the camper present a hazard to other campers or significantly disrupt camp operations. 2. If a child habitually refuses to acknowledge the authority of camp staff. 3. If the parents of the child refuse to acknowledge a pattern of documented behavioral concerns, or refuse to partner with camp staff in administering discipline. In addition, Camp Unite Directors reserve the right to make determinations regarding the seriousness of any infraction and the level of threat it presents to the camp as a whole. In a case where a camper has presented a hazard to the camp, through his or her actions, camp management may disallow the camper from the premises after the first infraction. In all other cases, three such infractions are necessary before expulsion is considered and consequences will be handled in the following order: • • •

• •

The first time a child breaks a rule he or she will be reminded that their behavior is inappropriate and it will be clearly stated that a warning has been given. The second time a child breaks a rule in the same day, the counselor will provide a consequence such as a 5-10 minute time-out period away from the group. The third time a child breaks a rule in the same day, a stricter consequence will be provided such as being sent to the Camp Director for a time-out period and an opportunity for the Camp Director to speak with this child regarding their behavior. The fourth time a child breaks a rule in the same day the child's parents will be called by the Camp Director to discuss the child's misbehavior. The parents will be asked to come and pick up their child immediately and the child will not be allowed to return to camp that day, but will be allowed to return to camp the following day. (Please know that no refund will be given for such suspensions) If the child’s misbehavior persists the following day, the Camp Director will call the child’s parents to come and pick up their child immediately and the child will not be permitted to return to camp. (Please know that no refund will be given for such expulsions).

Severe Clause: In cases of severe misbehavior, such as fighting, vandalism, defying a counselor, or in some way stopping the whole group from functioning, a child will not receive a warning. He or she will lose the right to proceed through the hierarchy of consequences. If such a case arises, the child will be sent directly to the Camp Director. Campus Rules: Dunwoody Baptist Church is a non-smoking facility. Please refrain from smoking while on the church campus, and at all camp activities. Drinking alcohol is also prohibited on church campus and at all camp activities. Illegal drugs are prohibited on church campus and at all camp activities. Weapons and firearms are prohibited on church campus and at any camp activities Child Welfare: Camp Unite has a zero tolerance for abuse. All camp staff members are trained in child protection policies. We take these issues and policies very seriously. We are required by law to report when there is reasonable cause to believe that a child has been abused in any way, including physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, abandonment, and/or sexual abuse/exploitation.

Grievances: All grievances should be directed to the Camp Director. Usually the problem can be solved through a personal conference. Appropriate records and documentation will be kept on matters relating to the grievances. Right to Amend Policies: Camp Unite reserves the right to add and/or change policies for any family or camper when necessary, due to individual circumstances and issues. This includes but is not limited to payment policies, late pick-up policies and behavior management policies. Swimming: All campers will be swimming at the DBC Fitness Center Pool on selected days each week this summer. During this time the pool remains open to members, and campers will be using 2-3 designated lanes in the pool. Swimming is supervised by a certified life guard and camp staff members stationed around the pool. On the registration form there is a space to let us know the swimming level of your child. This information will be passed on to your child’s counselors in order to ensure your child’s safety at the pool. We strongly recommend that all campers have some swimming experience before attending camp.
