See a drive-in movie Picnic dinner in the park…take the Frisbee Find a small town fair. Make and take cards to the nursing home Play mini-golf Invite a young family to go catch fireflies Flea market scavenger hunt Attend an outdoor concert Go to a baseball game Challenge a neighbor family to come over for game night

And as you go along, don’t forget to look for teachable moments or moments to ask your teenager good conversation questions. Remember, you are preparing them to live on their own, independently dependent upon the Lord, so look for opportunities to talk about matters of the heart and living for the Lord in real life. PARENTING TEENS

Enforcing boundaries can be one of the most difficult tasks of parenting teenagers. When your precious teenager tests their boundaries this summer, here’s a few things to keep in mind… 1. Gain Perspective – the ultimate goal of discipline is that our children will become selfdisciplined, and live a life pleasing to the Lord. We want them to be well-equipped to face life’s temptations with the ability to make wise choices. To help you gain perspective about communicating with your teenager in order to guide their behavior, consider the following passages: a. Psalm 94:12-13 b. Proverbs 3:11-12 c. Proverbs 15:5,31-32 d. Hebrews 12:7-11 2. Start with Your Example – Many times our kids are simply doing what they see being done. I know this is the worst! Spend time in prayer, confessing your sins to the Lord and ask Him to strengthen your self-discipline. You are probably aware of some habits that you see in your kids that reflect your own habits. Don’t be afraid to share how God is working in your life and your dependence on God’s grace. 3. Separate the Behavior from the Person – many teenagers are struggling to believe they are valuable to the Lord or anyone else. Discouragement, frustration, and exasperation are typical feelings for young people. When you correct your son or daughter, try this: Establish and communicate boundaries and consequences in advance. Keep it simple. Listen to your teenager. It helps them feel accepted and secure. They may have concerns or questions, so model respect for their point-of-view, but expect them to respect your authority. Affirm your unconditional love regardless of how displeased you are with their current behavior.
