TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Joshua 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel and told them if it did not please them to serve God, then they must decide who they would serve. The people claimed that God had brought them out of slavery and protected them on their journey. Therefore, they would serve, the Lord their God, and no one else. Second Reading: Ephesians 5:21-32 Husbands and wives should love one another as Christ loved the Church. They should nourish and care for each other as Christ cared for the church. Through the union between the two, they become one. Gospel: John 6:60-69 Many of Jesus' followers were still disturbed by his teaching of the living bread, which they could not yet fully understand. Jesus explained that the Spirit gives life, and flesh is unimportant. Some of the disciples decided to leave. Jesus asked if the Twelve also wanted to leave. Although they do not completely understand yet, they have enough faith in Jesus to stay because they believe he is God's holy one.

Ten Good Reasons to Go to Mass 1. God asked us to make one day holy –When we go to Mass each week we begin to see everything from a different perspective. We have an opportunity to reconnect spiritually. 2. Jesus gave us the gift of himself- When we go to Mass we are doing what Jesus asked us to do at the last Supper, when he instituted the Eucharist. 3. We need to be part of a community- God created us as social beings. When we come together at Mass to pray and worship God, we fulfill a deep need inside of us to be in communion with other people. 4. God has a special message for us- When we listen to the homily, the readings and the prayers of the Mass, God speaks to us in a special way. We should come away from Mass with at least inspiration that will impact our lives in some way. 5. We need to talk to God- When we go to Mass, we speak to God when we sing, when we join in the communal responses and prayers and when we pour out our personal prayers to God from the depths of our hearts. 6. People need our prayers- We can pray for people anytime, but when we pray for others during Mass, we pray in a special way. It doesn’t matter if the other people are separated from us by distance or death. The Mass brings us together in the Body of Christ and we all become the communion of Saints. 7. We stand up for what we believe- At every Mass, we have the opportunity to stand up and proclaim what we believe publicly. It is a powerful statement and a way to recommit ourselves. 8. We know we make mistakes- At every Mass; we have the opportunity to review the past week. We admit to God that we have sinned in thought, word, in deed, in what we have done and what we have failed to do. We seek forgiveness. 9. We need to experience something bigger than ourselves- When we go to Mass, we share in the death and resurrection of Jesus. We are strengthened by the Eucharist and sent out into the world to bring the Gospel message to all people. 10. We need ritual in our lives- Mass is a ritual, which means that through the repetition of the prayers, the movements, and the changing of bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ, we are formed.
