THE MESSENGER July/August 2018

To live so that oth e Jesus Christ for the t rs will become d iples of isc ransfor mati on o f the world.

Pastoral Letter Dear Friends, I’m excited to be joining the pastoral team at Westlake United Methodist Church as we become one church in two locations. As a lifelong United Methodist, I love the way our connectedness can help us further the mission of the United Methodist Church to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World. The joining of Westlake United Methodist church and Simpson United Methodist Church into this one church in two locations offers us an opportunity to bring together people with different backgrounds, different experiences and different journeys to help us be a church that is living into our dual call to discipleship and transformation. This journey into a new thing, however, won’t always be easy. Change is always hard – even when the change is as positive as this is. This new church will require us to do things in new ways and have grace for one another as we face growing pains together. So, as we move towards the new life and way of being in which God has called us, let us remember that each person, each team and each pastor is being motivated by the same spirit, driven by the same mission and seeking faithfully to both make disciples and live into the call to transformation. While I prepare to join the team at Westlake, I am also in the midst of leaving my current appointment. As such, I’ve had an opportunity to dive into the liturgy in our united Methodist book

Suburban Campus 27650 Center Ridge Road • Westlake, Ohio 44145 (440) 871-3088 • westlakeumc.org Sunday Worship at 8:15, 10:00 and 11:28 a.m.

of worship for just such a time as this. In the liturgy for saying goodbye to a pastor, we find this exchange: Pastor: I ask forgiveness for the mistakes I have made. Congregation: We…offer forgiveness, and accept that you now leave to minister elsewhere….We ask your forgiveness for our mistakes. Pastor: I accept your gratitude and forgiveness, and I forgive you, trusting that our time together and our parting are pleasing to God. As we begin this new journey together, we must remember that we will make mistakes, we will need to ask forgiveness, and we are all seeking to be faithful in living out our call. So even now, as we begin this journey, I both ask for and offer forgiveness for the ways we will bump up against one another, the ways we will step on each other’s toes and the ways we will challenge one another. We know that through Christ God has forgiven us, and will continue to invite us to live more faithfully with one another. And, so, I leave you with a favorite quote from Poet Maya Angelou: “I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better.” Let us keep growing together so that we might know and do better with God’s help.

Blessings,

Rev. Paige

News and Committee Reports One Church in Two Locations Transition Update The transition team has been meeting every other week since May and much progress has been made as we become One Church on July 1. While transitions will continue throughout this year, the team is working towards many updates to be ready for the September 9th kickoff Sunday. Here are some of the things that have been happening: • Simpson UMC has paid off all past due apportionments and is preparing documents to close and transfer assets to Westlake UMC. Historically significant items from Simpson UMC will be sent to the East Ohio Conference archive. Property deeds and all utilities are being transferred to Westlake UMC. • On July 1, the Simpson location will be reopened as the Simpson Metro West Campus of Westlake United Methodist Church. The Westlake location will be known as the Suburban Campus of Westlake United Methodist Church. • Worship times at Simpson Metro West campus will be adjusted mid August. • The Simpson Metro West Campus will have new outdoor signage welcoming the neighborhood. • A refreshed website that addresses the whole church as well as both campuses is being planned for the fall. • Housing for Rev. Paige will be rented at the old First Hispanic UMC parsonage on Lorain and West 44th street within the

expanded geographical area of focus of the Simpson Metro West campus. The North Coast District will do renovations and Rev. Paige will move in sometime in October. We will rent the parsonage from Avon Lake Shore UMC for her housing July – October eliminating a temporary move. • Trustees have lighting projects underway at the Simpson Metro West campus to bring emergency lighting up to code along with adding GFI outlets in the kitchen. • A process for the Simpson Metro West Sunday offering to be transferred to and counted at the Suburban Campus has been developed to begin July 1. • Simpson Metro West membership records are being added to the WUMC membership database. • All Sunday bulletins will be printed at the Suburban Campus. A shared bulletin insert is being developed. Questions? Ask a Transition Team Member: Kay Martin, Chair Rev. Mollie Brown Rev. Paige Boyer Rev. Dianne Tobey  Covault Duane Miller

The WUMC Suburban Campus nursery /pre-school continues to be staffed during the summer months. Kids going into 4th grade and beyond will gain valuable experience by sitting with their families to participate in worship. Studies show that being in worship as a child is the strongest predictor to participating in church as adults. Children’s worship bags, with activity pages that reinforce the lessons, are available from the Ushers. Sunday school kids K–3rd will start in worship and depart for class following the children’s message. After 10am worship, parents pick up their children in classroom 106–107.
