WESTLAKE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

Pastoral Reflections At the Church Conference, to be held on Monday, November 18th at 7:00 p.m. at Lakewood UMC, there will be a motion for WUMC Leadership Chair Karla Lux to appoint a task force to look at the entirety of capital needs for the church. This will include long term maintenance of the current building, potential improvements in the current building, and any possible additional space that might need to be created. The additional agenda for this meeting will include hearing from our District Superintendent, hearing a report from Leadership Council and the pastor (me), and a review of church membership and financial data. This is open to all members of the church and will be held with other area churches such as Rockport, Rocky River, Lakewood, Westlake (plus a few more). It is also a good time to have fellowship with other UM Christians.

The important part of the process will not just be the approval that evening, but the listening and imagining of what God is calling us to do and be, and how we can best cooperate with each other to encourage dreams and service. I am impressed that the values that have been articulated for some time at WUMC are still true today. We do understand worship to be of central importance, but that helping people grow in their faith, and serve in Christ’s name (some prefer God’s name) is all truly good. God is in the grace and blessing business, and we should make sure we are as well. In Christ,

Pastor John

Faith Giving Dear Friends and Members of Westlake UMC: A pastor (not one connected with WUMC) was a paperboy as a child. The first week after he collected from the customers his dad asked him, ”How much did you make?” He replied, “$2.” His dad handed him an offering enveloped and suggested he give 20 cents. He did and it began a life time of finding joy in being generous with God and the church. We believe that God will provide. We believe that “trusting God is good enough for individuals, and good for the church.” This is what faith giving is about. It is simply that as long we are being faithful to what God is asking of us, God will provide for the needs of the church.

In 1981, Don Lefelar came across the idea of “Faith Giving.” He instituted it in 1982, while serving Niles First UMC, during layoffs at steel and auto plants in the Youngstown area. The result was a year-end surplus in the church budget. “For every Faith Giving campaign [he] has been involved with (there have been 22 of them in three different churches) surpluses have always resulted.” We look forward to another year of being faithful with God. With you on the journey, Jim Kubancik Finance Chair

World Wide Candlelighting

Sunday, December 8th at 6:45p.m. Westlake UMC will host a candlelighting in memory of all children who have died too soon. The gathering will include music, inspirational readings, and messages of hope. At 7 p.m. we will light candles to join the circle of light as it passes thru each time zone encircling the globe to honor the memory of children who were the light of so many lives. Parents, siblings, grandparents, and friends are invited to share in this time of healing and hope. Afterwards share time together with refreshments, a memory wall, and the release of candle lanterns so that the light of our children will always shine. For more information contact the church office or go to compassionatefriends.org.

SPICE: SPECIAL PEOPLE IN

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

Children with special needs, and their

families, may need a pinch to a pound of extra support to engage in worship and/or Sunday school programs

offered at WUMC. Some of our children benefit from the support of a “shadow” that supports them in a Sunday

school classroom. Others may benefit from opportunities

to engage and be cared for outside of a classroom while parents feed their spirit in the sanctuary. Let’s talk if this speaks to you. Together, with the calm and caring support of SPICE Coordinator, Matthew Wolf, we can explore options to help your Sundays rise to feed you throughout the week. Contact Carol Ryan via the church office or [email protected].

Performing Arts Series

PERFORMING MUSIC INSPIRED BY

DOWNTON ABBEY

Led by violinist Mary Beth Ions, join us for a wide-ranging program of music from the historical period of this TV hit series that takes you from World War I to the present. Mary Beth and the other musicians who make up Amethyst String Quartet have performed in many orchestras supporting the WUMC Chancel Choir and as soloists over the years in the Performing Arts Series. Enjoy the hauntingly beautiful music as Mary Beth engages you with her storytelling talents taking you on this journey of music from around the world. Enthusiasts of Downton Abbey will delight in the stirring themes of the show as the music brings the post-Edwardian era atmosphere and characters to life. You will hear not only music from the show but also favorite selections from the era including Elgar’s Salut d’Amour (you’ll recognize this tune from nearly every commencement exercise you’ve ever attended), even fox trots, hymns and waltzes made popular in the 1920s. Even if you are not familiar with this Emmy©, Golden Globe©, SAG© award-winning series, you don’t have to be a fan to enjoy the suspenseful music of this popular performance! The concert is free and open to the public. Invite your friends, family and neighbors to join you and hear this entertaining program loaded with surprises. There is something for everyone!

Our church was well represented with quilts made by Jeanne Bush, Mariam Keirstead, Diana Stacho, Sharon Dixon, and Tina Crawford. Also the North Coast Needlers Community Service Committee donated three quilts. The Flat Rock Homes Youth Choir gave meaning to all the efforts of the many people that had worked so hard to make this a success. The auction was so much fun. Another meaningful experience. ~Tina Crawford
