WESTLAKE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

Pastoral Reflections “’Tis the season” is a phrase that we may find ourselves singing during the season of Christmas. This, however, is not a “Christmas in July” newsletter article. Within the lives of many local congregations of The United Methodist Church, the summer months are a season of transition. This is where we find ourselves during the summer of 2015 at Westlake UMC.

recorded in Scripture. 1 Samuel 16:1 states, “The LORD said to Samuel, ‘How long will you grieve over Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel. Fill your horn with oil and set out; I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.’” Even though Samuel was in the midst of a transition in his life, God still had work for him to complete. There was work to be done in the name of our God!

Many faithful followers of Jesus Christ in United Methodist churches are busy saying good-bye and saying hello this summer. Clergy and laity alike find themselves in the midst of transition. Transitions can be times filled with many different emotions. Whether a transition is something that we looked forward to, or one that we had not anticipated, the beginning of any new way of life or a change in a significant relationship marks the end of what we had previously known. These transitions form a line in time. We speak of our lives in terms of these “times.” We refer to our high school or college years, the time when we were single, or the different pastorates in the life of a church.

Throughout congregations of The United Methodist Church, this summer “’tis the season” of transition; however, there is still work to be done. We are called to serve our Lord during all of the seasons of life, even during transitions. As your new pastor, I find myself surrounded by boxes, walking into furniture that just was not in that place before, and getting lost at times in a new community. As parishioners of WUMC you are saying good-bye to a beloved pastor, and greeting a new one. We are all in a season of transition. We are also all called to continue to serve our risen Lord. There is work to be done in the name of Christ, and I look forward to serving God alongside each of you.

’TIS THE SEASON

Transitions are not new occurrences. We experience a variety of transitions in our lifetime and there are many

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Mollie

We said goodbye ...with PIE & POLKAS! Best Wishes Rev. John! There were laughs, stories, shared memories, good music, dancing and lots of pie as we said a sincere thank you to Rev. John Butchko at his retirement party. The congregation showed their love by bringing in over 50 pies to honor Rev John. Under the big top tent, Ken Wardell and Don Lefelar shared reflections of Rev. John and the children presented him with a memory book of photos and cards. Before we struck up the polka band for more dancing, Dr. Parks gave a holy blessing. Thanks to all who contributed to a wonderful send off. May God continue to bless the life and ministry of John Butchko!

World War II Memories Shared From prison camps to oleo, your stories were wonderful! It would take too many adjectives to describe the emotions I felt when I read them. As I stood by the display on Sunday, May 24th, I head those emotions expressed as people were reading the stories. Either you or your parents were aptly described as “The Greatest Generation.” The response to the request for stories was great! 37 people wrote stories for us. My deep appreciation to the following: John Alsup, Carl & Dot Antel, Carol Askin, Mary Brown, John Butchko, Moises Buzon, Mary Chidester, Jack & Gail Connor, Ethel Cooke, Emory & Kathryn Crowder, Nanci Danburg, Barbara Deeds, Bill & Peggy Deierhoi, Val Dickerson, Ron & Cathie Dietrich, Art Fritinger, Beth Garrett, Judy Gateiu, Jim Gramlich, Arlene Johnson, Shirley Johnston, Don Lefelar, Betty Levis, Sterling Louis, Peggy Lundberg, Rowena Luke, Judy McDonald, Barb Parker, Dick Parks, Bob Peritch, Morrey & Louanne Proskine, Bob Remington, Kent Spieth, Diana Stacho, Kathy Tafuri, Ken Wardell, and Pat Zellers. Thanks again to all of you! ~Sharon Spieth

Office Help Needed! JULY 20, 21, 22, 23, 24 9 A.M.—12 P.M. OR 12 P.M.—3 P.M.

THURSDAY, AUGUST 13TH AT 10:30 A.M. Greetings Ladies! Our United Methodist Women’s monthly meetings are starting early this year! All women of the church are welcome to join us the second Thursday of every month! Our “church year” begins with our business meeting, followed by lunch at 12 noon. Remember to bring your sandwich — beverages and dessert will be provided. The August program is at 1:00 p.m. (even if you can’t make the meeting/lunch, you are welcome to the program!). "Trends in Mystery Fiction," will be presented by by Molly Campana from the Westlake Porter Library. Hear about global crime and historical mysteries. Get updates on your favorite authors and new voices in mystery fiction.

Are you able to assist in the office for a few hours maybe once or twice a week during the third week of July? Stephanie is going on vacation and could use assistance during her absence with answering phones, sorting mail, and perhaps helping with small tasks in the office. You do not have to be computer literate (but that’s a bonus!), just willing to talk to people on the phone or at the window, take messages, and assist with shredding, addressing envelopes, or helping with craft prep for Sunday School. You can always bring a book to read as well! Please contact Stephanie at (440) 871-3088 or via email at [email protected] and let her know what days/ times you are available. Thanks!

SUMMER CHILDREN’S CLASSES Through August 30th, our summer Sunday school routine is in full swing. For children who have NOT attended kindergarten to date, your programs remain the same: Nursery, 2-3 year old class, and Bee-lievers preschool class (at 10 a.m. only). Preschoolers who are entering kinder in the fall will change Sunday school class level in the fall. Children entering first, second, or third grade only (or said backwards, having completed kinder, first, or second grade only) will be dismissed from worship to join a multi -age and amazingly fun Sunday learning program. Parents/guardians will pick such kiddos up at the conclusion of worship in Room 103.

A WORD FROM VBS The Westlake Ecumenical VBS team thanks every parent who entrusted us with their child(ren), and every joyful volunteer who made another wonder VBS week possible this year. Of course, our biggest thanks goes to our smallest peeps. Thanks kids, youth, and teens for the laughter, song, and perspective you brought into our lives.

Attention Youth! Have you heard…. On Sunday, May 31st, youth celebrated the graduating seniors and also participated (along with congregation members) to donate over 3 feet of hair to "Children with Hair Loss"!! Thanks to Sierra Swisher for organizing and heading up the effort, and to Alex (from the nursery) for creating such adorable styles after the big cut! Congratulations to all our Seniors!

YOUTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE Over the weekend of June 13-15, Taylor Adair, Hope Beatty, Molly McNamara and Alex Rujawitz participated in the Eastern Ohio Youth Annual Conference. While there, the youth participated in important conversations, including on various resolutions that pertain to religious tolerance and including differently-abled people in church services. All 4 youth were active and thoughtful participants. Congratulations to Hope Beatty who was voted onto the CCYM district youth board. She joins Taylor representing the North District working on many district youth events. Great job guys!

VOLUNTEER WITH CHILDREN'S EDUCATION PROGRAMS Maybe you've been asked to help before but it wasn't the right time. Maybe you thought you could only volunteer in a class that your own child is a participant. Maybe you think you need to be able to quote scriptures with winning game show like skills to help in a class. Well, maybe? We think "maybe volunteer" might move from perhaps to perchance to probably when you learn the variety of ways you could volunteer in and out of classroom this fall. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Carol Ryan at: cryan@westlakeumc,org or through the church office.

Help Wanted! COORDINATOR POSITION AVAILABLE Westlake’s Meals on Wheels program is searching for a volunteer coordinator. This is a part-time, salaried position, 18 to 20 hours weekly. Duties include recruiting, scheduling and training volunteers in kitchen and delivery practices and procedures, monthly client billing, public speaking, various office administrative duties and generally acting as the public face of the organization. The successful candidate will be detail oriented and very organized as you will work with 65 volunteers weekly. Please direct questions and interest to 440 871-2551 and leave a message detailing the qualifications and experiences that qualify you for this position. Thank you.

Westlake Prays Every Thursday at 5:45 p.m. at rotating Westlake churches — watch the Sunday bulletin for location (WUMC hosts the 5th Thursday when it occurs). Day after day in the news media, we seem bombarded with an endless parade of events on the world stage that seem over-whelming and tragic. All seem beyond our ability to comprehend and control. Without faith this is a formula for despair and withdrawal. But as people of faith we are invited to join together… to lift our hearts together… for the many needs that confront our existence. While the churches within the city of Westlake are of Christian denomination, we wish to extend an open invitation to all persons of faith and prayer. We will host these times of prayer for as long as there is supportive interest in joining together, to pray together. All are welcome.

Got Medicare? ASK PATRICIA….

Thanks!

by Patricia Whited-Stineman, OSHIIP Medicare Counselor (440) 781-1383

Thank you to the Westlake UMC family for all of the cards, gifts, and well wishes for my retirement. ~Rev. John Butchko

Question: How do I replace my Medicare card? Answer: Medicare beneficiaries can now obtain a replacement card if they have lost, damaged, or simply need to replace it, using an online “my Social Security” account. New Online Service for Replacement Medicare Cards: Requesting a replacement card through my Social Security account is a convenient, cost-effective and secure way available for Medicare beneficiaries to replace this identification that may be required by medical providers as proof of Medicare coverage.

Love is all you need and we got "bombed"!!!! Cards which carried so many prayers, thoughts & laughs came in a big bundle! And we woke up to sunshine, hearts and smiles! Thank you all- we thought we were already filled with your love and then you shared more! Love, ~Alex and Judy Massey

First you will need to set-up your on-line my Social Security account. Next, select the “Replacement Documents” tab, then the “Mail my replacement Medicare card” tab. Your card will arrive in the mail within 30 days. *** from OSHIIP news For more details about events and to view the church calendar, please visit our website at westlakeumc.org

WSEM (West Side Ecumenical Ministry): COMMUNITY CORNER For over ten years our church has been supporting Community Corner, which is located at 8302 Detroit Avenue in Cleveland. It has a food pantry, where people who live in the area can come for a three-day supply of food, plus a small resale shop, which helps support the food pantry. The members of our church donate all types of clothing, shoes, and household items (dishes, towels, sheets, pots and pans, small appliances, etc.) for the resale shop. These items are placed in the large box downstairs near the library and kitchen areas. Donations are taken down when on Friday, and often on Wednesday. As you are cleaning out your house this summer, remember Community Corner. Thanks for all who have been donating for so many years. It is greatly appreciated.
