Patience in Scripture Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break bone. Proverbs 25:14-16

What is Patience? Let s look at a few definitions…

Job 1:12-21 One day when Job s sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the oldest brother s house, a messenger came to Job and said, The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby, and the Sabeans attacked and made off with them. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you!

Job 1:12-21 While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, The fire of God fell from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants, I am the only one who has escaped to tell you! While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said, The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them.

Job 1:12-21 They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you! While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said, Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking at the oldest brother s house, when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house.

Job 1:12-21 It collapsed on them and they are dead, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you! At this Job got up and tore his robe and shaved his head. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said:

Job 1:12-21 Naked I came from my mother s womb, and naked I will depart. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised. In all this, Job, did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.

Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering…You have heard of Job s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. James 5:10-11

Why It is difficult to develop patience

It goes against human nature.

Pride, selfishness, and anger choke patience out.

Impatience has become a virtue.

A patient man has great understanding but a quicktempered man displays folly. proverbs 14:29

God is patient with unbelievers as He wants them to be saved.

The door of salvation is open because the lord is patient Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in Him and receive eternal life. II Peter 3:15
