PAUL’S CONFIDENCE CAN BE YOUR CONFIDENCE Philemon 17-25 INTRODUCTION: 1.

Philemon was won to Christ by Paul, as was Onesimus, Philemon’s slave. Philemon’s slave was now his brother in Christ.

2.

In Philippians 1:6, Paul stated, “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.”

3.

We are no longer slaves, but sons and family. We go from felons to family.

4.

Psalm 20:7-8, “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; But we will remember the name of the Lord our God. They have bowed down and fallen; But we have risen and stand upright.” Paul’s confidence was in the Lord, just like David’s confidence was in Psalm 20.

5.

Let’s look at Philemon 17-25 to see how we can be confident like Paul was in this passage.

BODY: I.

PAUL WAS CONFIDENT IN HIS PARTNERSHIPS IN CHRIST (vs. 17-19) A.

Paul trusted in his partnership with Philemon. 1.

Partner = Koinonia = fellowship or joint participation

2.

Receive Onesimus or welcome him. It means “to receive into one’s family circle.” Be warm, generous and glad in receiving people.

3.

Paul told Philemon to receive Onesimus as he would receive him.

B.

C.

Paul’s partnership cost him. 1.

“But if Onesimus has wronged you or owes you anything, put that on my account.”

2.

It could be “wronged you” or “robbed you”

3.

Put it on my account. a. To impute = means to put it on account (a legal term) b. The debt we owed was put on Christ’s account. c. “Love does more than solve problems; love pays a price” d. “Grace is love that pays a price” e. Onesimus had repented.

Paul wrote with his own hand that he would repay because of his relationship with Philemon and Onesimus. 1.

It was a legal obligation when you wrote with your own hand.

2.

“I will repay whatever he owes you!”

3.

Remember, you owe me as the one who brought you to Christ.

APPLICATION: 1.

Paul had confidence in God and his family partners.

2.

We can welcome other members of the family.

3.

We are accepted in God’s family because of what Jesus Christ has done for us.

II.

PAUL HAD CONFIDENCE THAT PHILEMON WOULD OBEY AND BRING JOY & REFRESHING TO HIM (VS. 20-22) A.

B.

C.

“Let me have joy from you in the Lord.” 1.

It could be translated - “let me have ‘profit’.” This was a play on words because Onesimus’ name meant “profitable.”

2.

“The joy of the Lord is our strength.” Nehemiah 8:10.

“Refresh my heart in the Lord.” 1.

God uses people to refresh us.

2.

Refresh = GK = an-at-el’-lo = to cause to arise, spring up, be up

3.

II Timothy 1:16, “ The Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain;”

4.

Our times of refreshing come from being in God’s presence and being with God’s people. Acts 3:19

Paul was confident that Philemon would obey. 1.

Expect the best in others! Call it out of them.

2.

Expect obedience.

3.

John 14:21, “He who has My commandments and keeps them, it is he who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and manifest Myself to him.”

4.

If we love God, we obey Him.

5.

Let’s be like Philemon. Paul said to Philemon, “I know you will do even more than I say.”

Get the guestroom ready!

2.

“I trust that through your prayers I shall be granted to you.” (or released)

3.

James 5:16, “Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.”

4.

Thank God for the prayers of our brothers and sisters in Christ.
