And with thy MINISTER:

Let us pray.

COLLECT FOR PURITY ALMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts, by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name: through Christ our Lord. Amen.

INTROIT— Suscepimus. Psalm 48. We have waited, O God, for thy lovingkindness, in the midst of thy temple: according to thy Name, O God so is thy praise unto the world’s end: thy right hand is full of righteousness. Ps. ibid. Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised: in the city of our God, even upon his holy hill. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

SUMMARY OF THE LAW — Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. KYRIE — (mass booklet, pg. 7) GLORIA IN EXCELSIS — (mass booklet, pg. 8) MINISTER:

The Lord be with you.

COLLECTS For the Day — O God, whose never-failing providence ordereth all things both in heaven and earth: we humbly beseech thee to put away from us all hurtful things, and to give us those things which are profitable for us. Through Jesus Christ thy son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen. Bl. Jeremy Taylor — Grant we beseech thee, Almighty God that the reverend solemnity of Blessed Jeremy Taylor, thy Confessor and Bishop, may bot5h increase our devotion and set forward our salvation and, O God, the Pastor and Ruler of all the faithful, graciously look upon thy servant Denver Presley, whom thou hast been please to set as Pastor over thy

Church: grant him, we beseech thee, to be in word and conversation a wholesome example to the people committed to his charge, that he with them may attain in the end to everlasting life. Through Jesus Christ thy son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen. EPISTLE — Romans VIII, 12. Brethren: We are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Response: Thanks be to

God.

GRADUAL & ALLELUIA — Psalm 31. Be thou my strong rock and house of defénce, that thou mayest save me. In thee, O Lord, have I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion. Alleluia, alleluia. Psalm 48. Great is the Lord, and highly to be praised: in the city of our God, even upon his holy hill. Alleluia.

MINISTER: PEOPLE: MINISTER: PEOPLE:

The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The continuation of the Holy Gospel according to . . . Glory be to thee O Lord.

And with thy Spi- rit.

Glo-ry be to thee, O Lord.

GOSPEL — St. Matthew VII,15. At that time; Jesus said to his disciples: Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit: neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them. Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven: but he that doeth the will of my Father, which is in heaven. Response: Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Praise

be to Thee, O Christ.

CREED — recited together I BELIEVE in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And of all things visible and invisible: And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God; Begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of very God; Begotten, not made; Being of one substance with the Father; By whom all things were made: Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, And was made man: And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried: And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures: And ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of the Father: And he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, The Lord, and Giver of Life, Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; Who spake by the Prophets: And I believe one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church: I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins: And I look for the Resurrection of the dead: And the Life of  the world to come. Amen. SERMON HYMN 304

As the Sr. Warden stated last week, an immediate increase of 30% in our giving will balance our income against our reduced expenses. Please return your pledge cards in the offering plate, to the church office, member of the Vestry, or church officer before Labor Day so the Vestry may make timely decisions. HEALING REPORT: Of those specifically prayed for during our recent services, there have been reports of a healing of strep throat and adversely affected facial nerve. Please let the Rector know of any other healings that have happened in the congregation. PRAYER & FASTING REQUEST: Each member of St. Mary’s Church is asked to pick one meal per week from which to fast (not eat food) and during that time of fasting to pray for the ministry of St. Mary’s. TRINITY VIII

August 14, 2011

The fifth, sixth, and seventh chapters of the Gospel According to St. Matthew are the account of the Sermon on the Mount. Our Gospel reading today is taken from Chapter VII, near the end of the long teaching sermon by Jesus. He has been giving the disciples many instructions, and especially telling them how they should behave in order to truly follow Him. And then He says, “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.” There are many false prophets today, and many of them come in sheep’s clothing. The talk lovingly and with compassionate voices, fooling the unsuspecting, while advocating that the teachings of Jesus be ignored or discarded. They are often called “good people” while they deny the goodness of God. We are called by Jesus to beware, to be alert and discerning, that we not be fooled by wolves out to steal our souls by pretending to be sheep.

Sometime soon, read again the Sermon on the Mount. It can be overwhelming as we realize how we don’t even begin to live up to what our Lord calls us to be. But remember always that He has promised forgiveness if we are sorry and confess. He is always ready to guide us and help us do better. ****************************************************** BLESSED JEREMY TAYLOR, Bishop and Confessor Jeremy Taylor (15 August 1613 – 13 August 1667) was a clergyman in the Church of England who achieved fame as an author during the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell. He is sometimes known as the "Shakespeare of Divines" for his poetic style of expression and was often presented as a model of prose writing. He is remembered in the Church of England's calendar of saints with a Lesser Festival on 13 August. He was under the patronage of William Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury. He went on to become chaplain in ordinary to King Charles I as a result of Laud's sponsorship. This made him politically suspect when Laud was tried for treason and executed in 1645 by the Puritan Parliament during the English Civil War. After the Parliamentary victory over the King, [executed January 30, 1649 by Parliament] Taylor was briefly imprisoned several times. Eventually, he was allowed to live quietly in Wales, where he became the private chaplain of the Earl of Carbery. At the Restoration of the Monarchy, his political star was on the rise, and he was made Bishop of Down and Connor in Ireland. He also became vice-chancellor of the University of Dublin.
