COLLECT FOR PURITY ALMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts, by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name: through Christ our Lord. Amen.

INTROIT— Cum clamarem. Ps. 55. When I called upon the Lord, he regarded my petition; yea, from the battle that was against me: and he hath brought them down even he that is of old, and endureth forever; O cast thy burden upon the Lord and he shall nourish thee. Ps. Ibid. Here my prayer, O Lord, and hide not thyself from my petition: take heed unto me, and hear me. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

SUMMARY OF THE LAW — Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets. KYRIE — (mass booklet, pg. 7) GLORIA IN EXCELSIS — (mass booklet, pg. 8) MINISTER:

The Lord be with you.

COLLECTS For the Day — Let thy merciful ears, O Lord, be open to the prayers of thy humble servants: and that they may obtain their petitions, make them to ask such things as shall please thee. Through Jesus Christ thy son our Lord, who

liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen. St. Augustine of Hippo — Assist us, Almighty God, in these our supplications: and since thou dost give us confidence in the hope of thy goodness, graciously deign to grant us, at the intercession of blessed Augustine thy Confessor and Bishop, the fruit of thy wonted mercy, and O God, the Pastor and Ruler of all the faithful, graciously look upon thy servant Denver Presley, whom thou hast been please to set as Pastor over thy Church: grant him, we beseech thee, to be in word and conversation a wholesome example to the people committed to his charge, that he with them may attain in the end to everlasting life. Through Jesus Christ thy son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen. EPISTLE — I Corinthians XII.1. Brethren: Concerning spiritual gifts, I would not have you ignorant. Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

Response: Thanks be to

God.

GRADUAL & ALLELUIA — Psalm 17. Keep me, O Lord, as the apple of an eye: hide me under the shadow of thy wings. V. Let my sentence come forth from thy presence: and let thine eyes look upon the thing that is equal. Alleluia, alleluia. V. Psalm 65. Thou O God, are praised in Sion: and unto thee shall the vow be performed in Jerusalem. Alleluia.

MINISTER: PEOPLE: MINISTER: PEOPLE:

And with thy Spi- rit.

Glo-ry be to thee, O Lord.

GOSPEL — St. Luke XIX. 41. At that time: And when Jesus was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! But now they are hid from thine eyes. For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side, And shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation. And he went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought; Saying unto them, It is written, My house is the house of prayer: but ye have made it a den of thieves. And he taught daily in the temple. Response: Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Praise

be to Thee, O Christ.

CREED — recited together I BELIEVE in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And of all things visible and invisible: And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God; Begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of very God; Begotten, not made; Being of one substance with the Father; By whom all things were made: Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, And was made man: And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried: And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures: And ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of the Father: And he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, The Lord, and Giver of Life, Who proceedeth

from the Father and the Son; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; Who spake by the Prophets: And I believe one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church: I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins: And I look for the Resurrection of the dead: And the Life of  the world to come. Amen. SERMON HYMN 518

TRINITY X

August 28, 2011

Our collect today (Book of Common Prayer page 203) is a petition to the Lord to hear our prayers and to teach us how and what to pray. Many people say they have difficulty praying outside the written prayers of the Church except for those times when they call out “Please!” in a moment of great need. Well, let’s start with a written prayer, the collect for today. If this is prayed with sincerity and trust for several weeks, the Lord will answer. It is also a good idea, first thing each morning, to ask the Holy Spirit to guide and direct our prayers. Our prayer life is our relationship with God. Some of the saints (St. Theresa was one) have said we should pray without ceasing. There are few people who come close to reaching a state where their lives are in total communication with God – in prayer – at all moments, which is the state of perfection. But this is certainly what we are called to do, and the fact that we probably won’t come near to perfection is no reason not to try at all. As with anything in which we wish to become proficient, we must practice. We start with simple exercises, and keep adding more and more. Prayer, though, is different from (for instance) piano playing, as prayer can eventually become a part of every moment of living. Perfect prayer is the life being totally lived in His presence. Often, at time of stress, we wish we had become more perfect in prayer. We need to practice, so that we can pray with the mind of Christ at all times – in joy or in pain, in delight or in sorrow. Hymn 419 from the 1940 hymnal is a wonderful meditation and prayer on prayer.
