COLLECT FOR PURITY ALMIGHTY God, unto whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts, by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name: through Christ our Lord. Amen.

INTROIT— Dominus fortitudo. Psalm 27. The Lord is the strength of his people, and a stronghold of salvation to his Annointed One: O Lord, save thine own people, and give thy blessing unto thine inheritance; O feed them also, and set them up for ever. Ps. ibid. Unto thee will I cry, O Lord; my God be not silent unto me: lest, if thou make as though thou hearest not, I become like them that go down into the pit. Glory be . . .

SUMMARY OF THE LAW — Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ saith: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

COLLECTS For the Day — O God, who hast prepared for those who love thee such good things as pass man’s understanding; Pour into our hearts such love toward thee, that we, loving thee above all things, may obtain thy promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Octave of St. Anne — O God who didst vouchsafe to give grace to blessed Saint Anne that she might be worthy to bear the Mother of thine only begotten Son: mercifully grant that we who rejoice in the observance of her feast day, may by her intercession find favour in thy sight, and O God, the Pastor and Ruler of all the faithful, graciously look upon thy servant Denver Presley, whom thou hast been please to set as Pastor over thy Church: grant him, we beseech thee, to be in word and conversation a wholesome example to the people committed to his charge, that he with them may attain in the end to everlasting life. Through Jesus Christ thy son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen. EPISTLE — Romans VI, 3. Brethren: Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Response: Thanks be to

God.

GRADUAL & ALLELUIA — Psalm 90. Turn thee again, O Lord, at the last: and be gracious unto thy servants. Lord, thou hast been our refuge: from one generation to another. Alleluia, alleluia. Psalm 31. In thee, O Lord, have I put my trust, let me never be put to confusion: deliver me in thy righteousness: bow down thine ear to me, make haste to deliver me. Alleluia

MINISTER: PEOPLE: MINISTER: PEOPLE:

And with thy Spi- rit.

Glo-ry be to thee, O Lord.

GOSPEL — St. Matthew V, 20. At that time: Jesus said unto his disciples: Except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven. Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment: But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the uttermost farthing. Response: Praise be to thee, O Christ.

Praise

be to Thee, O Christ.

CREED — recited together I BELIEVE in one God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And of all things visible and invisible: And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God; Begotten of his Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, Very God of very God; Begotten, not made; Being of one substance with the Father; By whom all things were made: Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven, And was incarnate by the Holy Ghost of the Virgin Mary, And was made man: And was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate; He suffered and was buried: And the third day he rose again according to the Scriptures: And ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of the Father: And he shall come again, with glory, to judge both the quick and the dead; Whose kingdom shall have no end. And I believe in the Holy Ghost, The Lord, and Giver of Life, Who proceedeth from the Father and the Son; Who with the Father and the Son together is worshipped and glorified; Who spake by the Prophets: And I believe one Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church: I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins: And I look for the Resurrection of the dead: And the Life of  the world to come. Amen. SERMON HYMN 273

TRINITY VI

JULY 31, 2011

Today, we speak of Baptism, for it is the first of the two sacraments the Church has always taught were necessary for salvation. [The second is Holy Communion, receiving the Body and Blood of Christ, but we cannot do this without first being baptized.] At baptisms, the Orthodox sing a wonderful hymn that comes for the Epistle we hear today [Romans VI, 3-11]. It says, “As many as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” It is repeated many times during the ceremony, and we should repeat it over and over, for it is the most important thing in our lives. Remember the words from the Offices of Instruction in the Book of Common Prayer. By baptism you were “made a member of Christ, the Child of God, and an inheritor of the kingdom of heaven.” You were made one with our Lord Jesus, a member of His Body, joining Him in His Sonship to the Father, and making it possible for you to partake in His perfect sacrifice and in His glorious resurrection. It is not by belief that you are made a child of God, but by your baptism. By the water of baptism we are cleansed from original sin and given God’s grace to grow daily in holiness. So much is given to us in this wonderful sacrament. How often do we thank our Heavenly Father for our baptism? The Church provides some special reminders to help us thank God. At the entrances of the church there are holy-water fonts. As you enter you can dip your fingers and make the Sign of the Cross, reminding yourself of your entrance into the Church by water at your baptism. Also, in some parishes, the Asperges [during Easter, the Vidi Aquam] is sung while the priest sprinkles the entire congregation with Holy Water as the beginning and entrance to the Mass, as remembrance of our beginning at baptism.
