In 2013, Pope Francis said, “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has goodwill, who am I to judge?” The Pontiff also said, “this church with which we should be thinking is the home of all, not a small chapel that can hold only a small group of selected people. According to Georgetown University’s Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate, some 4.5 million Catholics in the United States are divorced and remarried without an “annulment,” a declaration from the church that the first marriage was not blessed by God. The Pope has held meetings with certain leaders in the church that suggest they should invite divorced and remarried Catholics back to Communion.
