3 Wishes One day, a man was walking along the beach and came across an odd-looking bottle. Not being one to ignore tradition, he rubbed it and, much to his surprise, a Genie actually appeared. “For releasing me from the bottle, I will grant you three wishes,” said the Genie. The man was ecstatic. “But there’s a catch,” the Genie continued.

“What catch?” asked the man, eyeing the Genie suspiciously. The Genie replied, “For each of your wishes, every politician in the world will receive DOUBLE what you asked for.” “Hey, I can live with that! No problem!” replied the elated man. “What is your first wish?” asked the Genie. “Well, I’ve always wanted a Ferrari!” POOF! A Ferrari appeared in front of the man. “Now, every politician in the world has been given TWO Ferraris,” said the Genie. “What is your next wish?” “I could really use a million dollars...” replied the man, and POOF! One million dollars appeared at his feet. “Now, every politician in the world is TWO million dollars richer,” the Genie reminded the man. “Well, that’s okay, as long as I’ve got MY million,” replied the man as he rolled his eyes. “And what is your final wish?” asked the Genie. The man thought long and hard, and finally said, “Well, you know, I’ve always wanted to donate a kidney....”

Early American farmers (and I'm sure many others) held some strange beliefs. Many of these superstitions survived until well into the 20th century, and some may still be around today. Plants of darkness (root crops, such as carrots, beets, potatoes, etc.) should be planted in the dark of the moon, or they'll go all to tops. Above-ground crops should be planted in the light of the moon. To (successfully) grow hot peppers, one must get mad while planting them. If the sun sets behind a bank of clouds on Thursday, it will rain before Sunday. If there's sweat on the outside of a metal watering trough, it's going to rain. If you see lightning in the south, it will be dry weather. A red sunset foretells clear weather, while a yellow sunset means rain or worry. (A little different than the familiar "Red skies at night, sailor's delight, red skies in morning, sailor's warning). If the electric wires hum, there will be a lightning storm. Thunder in February means there will be frost in May (another version says April). If the wind spreads a chicken’s tail feathers, it’s going to rain. A white ring around the moon means rain or snow. One could take one's pick of the following two theories about the moon and the possibility of rain. If the new moon is facing with its points down, it'll soon rain because the moon is full of water and it's just dumped it all. But on the other hand, if the new moon is on its back, it'll soon rain because it's full of water and will soon overflow. Feed your watchdog gunpowder to make him fierce. A dream told before breakfast will come true. The following actions will surely bring bad luck: Shake hands across a gate; sweep the floor after sunset; get out of bed left foot first; carry an ax, shovel or hoe through the house; move a broom from one house to another (unless you first throw it over the roof of the old house); whirl a chair on a single leg (I can understand this one); spill salt; look at the moon through bushes, or drop a hat on the bed. It was also bad luck for a woman or a girl to walk across a room with her bottom bare, or for two people to pass on the stairs. Eggs set on Sunday will hatch all roosters. If you sweep under the bed of a sick person, that person will never regain his strength.

If you have money in your pocket when you first see the new moon, turn the money over and you’ll have money the rest of the year. To cure foot cramps, turn your shoes bottom side up before going to bed. To cure a sty on the eye, touch it with the tip of a black cat’s tail. To cure whooping cough, drink mare’s milk. Wear gold beads around the neck to cure a sore throat, or red beads to stop a nose bleed. To cure chapped lips, kiss the middle rail of a rail fence. If a girl burns the cornbread, it means her sweetheart will be angry with her. A pan of kerosene under the bed cures rheumatism. If a girl catches a butterfly and bites off its head, she’ll get a new dress of the same color. If a girl leaves cobwebs on the kitchen door, her suitor won’t come back. If a sparking girl sits on a table, she won’t be married for another year. If a girl clips her fingernails on nine successive Sundays, her sweetheart will come for dinner. If a girl gets her apron wet while washing, her husband will be a drunk. If a red-bird flies across a girl’s path, she’ll be kissed before the night is over. If a girl stubs her toe, and right away kisses her thumb, a sweetheart will appear. If a girl’s skirt flies up it means her sweetheart is thinking of her. It'll frost six weeks after you hear the first katydid. If, when you blow out a candle, the wick smolders for a long time, bad weather is on the way. Frost is out of the ground when you hear the first frogs. Plant corn when the oak leaves are as big as a squirrel's ear. It'll soon rain when smoke from the chimney falls to the ground. Rain before seven, quit by eleven. A pig with a curly tail is easily fattened. Set eggs so they hatch in the sign of Cancer. Never set an even number of eggs to hatch. Cradle your rye on the Fourth of July. (In other words, cut your rye with a cradle scythe) Your corn should be knee-high by the Fourth of July. To establish your dominion over an unbroken horse, rub a dab of your sweat on his nose. If three people with the same first name get together, you can be pretty sure one is a fool. On Candlemas Day (2 February) half the wood and half the hay (should be left).

* When you’re shopping, remember to do the math. Bigger isn’t always a better deal in terms of cost per unit. Make sure by dividing the price by unit (ounces, pounds or pieces) to see how much you are paying. Sometimes, the bulk size represents a significant saving, but other times, it’s MORE expensive.

* Create your own “on this day in history” calendar, just for your family. Purchase a large wall calendar each year dedicated to memories. Start with just listing birthdays. Then you can document things that happen throughout the year. Maybe someone bought a new car, or lost a tooth. Write down visitors to your home and vacations. Then at the end of the year, transfer them to a new calendar, noting what year something happened. As the years progress, you’ll have a wonderful reminiscing calendar!

Lib graduated from the old Schoolfield High School and afterward took various adult education courses as they became available in those days. In 1941 when she was 18 years old, Lib married Pete Watkins of Danville and gave birth to her first child, Jay, in Nov., 1943. Her second son, Terry, arrived eleven months later, in Oct., 1944. Seven months premature, Terry was born with multiple, severe intellectual and physical disabilities that required 24-hours-a-day care his entire life. He lived to be 70. His welfare became Lib‘s primary mission and it set her on a course of activism on his behalf and for others with those challenges. In the late 1940s and early ‘50s there were no organized or mandated educational and social resources for children

historian in his own right) close out this column in his own words. Luke 2:1-14 “And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Merry Christmas!

Cooled Thermotherapy Is Prostate Option

--DEAR DR. ROACH: What’s your opinion on cooled thermotherapy for benign enlargement of the prostate? I recently was put on Flomax and finasteride, and was given the option of having this procedure to eliminate taking these two drugs. My urologist has had great success, while my internist says the success rate is only 60 percent. My internist did say it’s great if it works. -- S.V. ANSWER: Benign enlargement of the prostate is very common in older men, and medications like tamsolusin (Flomax) and finasteride (Proscar) often are used, and are pretty effective in most men. The most effective treatment remains surgery, called transurethral resection of the prostate, TURP, which reduces symptoms by at least half in 98 percent of men. Unfortunately, TURP causes side effects in at least 20 percent of men, so there are several procedures designed to try to get the benefit of surgery without the drawbacks. Cooled thermotherapy is a procedure using a microwave device to reduce prostate tissue. It isn’t as effective as TURP: Only 72 percent of men reduce their symptoms by half or more; however, it has reduced side effects, such as need for blood transfusion. Unfortunately, there were more symptoms of uncomfortable urination, urgency and need for a catheter after surgery. I think both of your doctors are right: Some men have good experiences, but not everyone will get relief. Some serious side effects are better with thermotherapy, and others are worse. You need to decide how much taking the medications

bothers you and if you can live with the symptoms the way they are. READERS: The new booklet on the prostate gland discusses cancer, enlargement, infections and erectile dysfunction in detail. Readers can obtain a copy by writing: Dr. Roach -- No. 1001W, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow up to four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I just read your column regarding the shingles vaccine. I am an insurance agent who is often asked about coverage for the shingles vaccine. The Affordable Care Act does include this under preventive care for individuals 60 and over. Preventive care is covered at 100 percent for health plans that are not grandfathered. (Grandfathered health plans are plans that have been continued virtually unchanged since 2010. They are not required to comply with all aspects of ACA, so these plans might not provide this service.) You also may be interested in knowing that, in our area, the Department of Health clinic does offer the shingles vaccine for a fee of $5 for individuals over the age of 50 who do not have it covered under a health plan. I am not aware if this is unique to our area, or if it is a widespread provision. ANSWER: Thank you for writing in. Others wrote to me that their Department of Health paid for most or all of the cost. Some said they could get the vaccine covered at a pharmacy but not at physician’s offices. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@ med.cornell.edu. To view and order health pamphlets, visit www. rbmamall.com, or write to Good Health, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. To prepare the ham: Trim off some of the fat, leaving a 1/4-inch layer. Score the remaining layer of fat into a diamond pattern by cutting 1/4- to 1/2-inch deep into the meat, forming 1 inch to 2 inch squares. Not only does scoring look nice, it allows any remaining fat to render from the ham and provides a greater surface area for the glaze to stick to.

To brine the ham: Cut crosswise slits all around the ham, about 1/2 inch apart, halfway through ham to where knife touches bone, if any. Place the water in a deep bowl, a large pot or a large, re-sealable food-safe plastic bag. Stir in the sugar. Soak the ham in the brining liquid for at least 2 days in the refrigerator, turning the ham once or twice each day. Drain off the brining liquid.

The Danville School Board will receive sealed proposals for providing Spray Foam Polyurethane Roof at Grove Park Preschool (RFP-1617404) in the Office of the Superintendent of Schools, 341 Main Street, Suite 100, Danville, VA 24541, until, but no later than 2:30 p.m. local prevailing time, January 16, 2017, at which time they will be opened and made part of the public record.

To glaze the ham: Place the ham in a roasting pan lined with enough foil overlapping the edges to wrap it completely. Mix together the honey, brown sugar, orange juice, ginger and dry mustard in a small bowl. Pour the mixture all over the pork and rub the glaze evenly over the ham. Stick the cloves in the diamond-shaped slits on the top of the ham. Wrap tightly with the foil. After glazing, it’s best to allow the ham to sit at room temperature for 1-2 hours before cooking.

The procedure for withdrawals of proposals shall be according to Section 11.54 of the Code of Virginia, 1950, as amended. Any person or firm interested in providing this service for the Danville School Board should contact Leon Ramsey, Director of Maintenance and Operation, at (434)-799-6481 for specifications and related information. Specifications may also be obtained via the district website at: www.danvillepublicschools.org/financial-services.
