Cancer Survivors Celebrate Hope Cancer survivors attending the Celebration of Hope Luncheon at the home of Sharon Souers, pictured above: Front Row- Cheryl Horne, JoAnn Johnson, Dorothy Chludzinski, Linda Dodson, Dianne McMahon, Sandra Driskill, Rose Mary Meadows and Sharon Souers, Independent Longaberger Home Consultant; Back Row- Martha Montgomery, Gloria Sink, Vicky High, Kathy Gardner, Robin Lawrence, and Barbara Miragliuolo. Cancer survivors received a Longaberger Coastal Gate Luncheon Tote while attending the fourteenth annual Celebration of Hope Luncheon. This year’s event netted over $4600 for the Danville Cancer Association. In the fourteen years that this event has been held, Souers has donated over $32,000 to help local cancer patients. Fifty-seven guests were welcomed by the walkway of pink flags and remembering cancer victims. Dr. Stacy Lahti was the guest speaker on Breast Cancer and Early Detection. A silent auction was included in the activities as well as recognizing the Longaberger Hostesses for their accomplishments during the year.

Out Of Gas After finishing an out-of-town errand, I discovered that my car wouldn’t start because it was out of gas.

We Do Snow Removal, Too!

A passer-by told me there was a service station a half-mile away, so I took a gas can from the trunk and trudged the distance in the sweltering sun. The attendant filled my two-gallon can, and I lugged it back and poured the gas into the tank. But when I tried to unlock the car door, it wouldn’t open. Just then, I noticed an identical old car parked a short distance away. That was my car; I had filled a stranger’s gas tank.

Samantha Henderson proves that it doesn’t matter your age... The Piedmont Shopper has something for everyone!

Wearily I walked back to the station. “You know,” the attendant suggested helpfully, “instead of walking back and forth to fill the tank from the can, you could put a couple of gallons in the tank and then drive the car here.”

VA Spends Big To Speed Disability Exam Claims The Department of Veterans Affairs has just announced the awarding of $6.8 billion in contracts to improve the Medical Disability Examination process and get veterans’ disability claims handed more quickly. Let’s look at the five companies it chose: --VetFed Resources, Inc., Virginia, a veteran-owned small business. --Logistics Health, Inc., Wisconsin, has a national network of “medical, dental and behavioral health providers” that offer annual physical exams and periodic health assessments. --Medical Support Los Angeles has dozens of clinics scattered around three states. --QTC Medical Services, Inc., California, appears to have a full complement of medical associates in seven big-city locations and has done exams since 2000. --Veterans Evaluation Services, Inc., Texas, is another veteran-owned company. A thumbs-up to the VA for expanding services to get the disability claims handled faster. However, anyone can build a website and say anything on it, as well as skew facts on an

application. One way to evaluate a company is to check the employer review sites on the Internet. You’ll find both positive and negative reviews anywhere you look, but the devil is always in the details. Sometimes employees make small comments that add up ... Another source of information is in patient complaints. I wonder if anyone considered any of these sources of information when they were awarding contracts, or if they only stuck to the applications in front of them. It’s also disturbing when two of the awardees file a protest with the Government Accountability Office against the others saying that the agency “misevaluated proposals, engaged in misleading discussions” and more in handing out the contracts. In wading through the very long decision documents, with the names of 28 attorneys at the top, it’s hard to see how all the legalese and finger pointing will translate into actual veteran care and medical disability evaluations. The song often ran over 14 minutes in concert. 2. “Lovely Day,” released in 1977. It’s thought to be the longest sustained note in U.S. Top 40 music. 3. McGuire turned to contemporary Christian music, where he is today. His 1965 “Eve of Destruction” lyrics have been updated. The original version was a rough cut that wasn’t finished. 4. Johnny Mathis, in 1963. 5. “Midnight Confessions,” by the Grass Roots, in 1968. The lyrics tell of a man’s love for a married woman he can’t have, possibly with a nod to the Reverend’s love for Hester Prynne in Hawthorne’s “The Scarlet Letter,” one of dozens of such instances in film and music. Visit Main and Union Streets on Thursday, October 13. Starting at 4:30 pm, unique and interesting artists, musicians, merchant specials and gallery openings are up and down the streets with Urban Line Dance on Union Street at 5:30 pm. After dancing in the street, head to the Coors Light Beer Garden for food, beverages and music with DJ Adam T until 9:30 pm. After the race, the fun continues at Averett’s Hometown Party at the Crossing for those over 21. Saturday is packed with races, arts, crafts, vendors, music, education and more! Danville’s Half Marathon takes off at 8 a.m. from Main Street Plaze. Showcase Alley runs until 5 pm on Bridge Street with stations that include International features, community organizations, regional vendors, local music and dancing, Hot Asana Yoga demonstrations, crafts and fine art. Want to know about science and the river, check out education areas with boating experts from Game & Inland Fisheries, River Science with Dan River Basin Association, hands-on experiments with Danville Science Center and IALR, 3D Printing from Danville Community College and exploration stations with the Pittsylvania County Library. Catch a trolley ride running 10 am and 2 pm to and from Craghead Street to the YMCA for more entertainment and to check out the Kids’ Triathlon starting at 10 am. And that’s not all! * “Whenever I need to remember to bring something with me for the next day (e.g., my lunch, important papers, school notes) I write it on a Post-it note and stick it on the door leading outside. If I have the item, I take the note down. Sometimes I write the day of the week, if I need different things on different days.” -- A.M. in Florida * Taco Tuesday was never so easy! Slip hard taco shells over the rack in your oven so that they hang open-side down. Use tongs to remove when they are sufficiently warm. Now you don’t have to argue about how to arrange them on a cookie sheet to keep them from closing up. * “If you have a muddy boot problem like mine, then get a couple cookie sheets and set them by the door. The boots go on the cookie sheets, and the mud doesn’t get tracked into the house.” -- A reader in New Jersey * If you have an old rake that the handle has broken off of, you can repurpose it on

your wall. Hang dog leashes, necklaces, a set of wrenches, anything really. Mount to the wall with nails so that the tines of the rake face out from the wall. Instant hanger! * To make your dryerase markers more convenient, simply tape small kitchen magnets to them with ordinary gift-wrap tape. Make sure the side of the magnet that is attracted to the refrigerator is facing out! * Now is the time to raid your kids’ dressup stash for Halloween ideas. Don’t overlook accessories that can make a great costume addition for adults, too. Doctor’s kits, pirate eyepatches and hats ... perhaps a tutu, too? Roasted Vegetable Croustade To Roast the Vegetables: 1 cup olive oil, divided 3 red potatoes, scrubbed and quartered 2 yellow squash, sliced into 1/2-inch-thick slices 10 Brussels sprouts, halved 4 green onions, root ends removed 1 large carrot, cut into 1/2-inch pieces 2 celery roots, peeled, trimmed and cut into 1/2-inch pieces 1 large head of garlic, separated into cloves, smashed and peeled 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 2 tablespoons Italian seasoning 1/4 teaspoon sugar 1. Heat the oven to 400 F. Pour 1/2 cup of the olive oil on a large sheet pan or jelly-roll pan, 15 1/2 by 10 1/2 by 1 inch, coating pan with the oil. Place pan in oven to heat for 5 minutes, watching carefully to make sure it doesn’t overheat or smoke. 2. In a large bowl, mix together the remaining 1/2 cup of oil, the potatoes, squash, Brussels sprouts, green onions, carrot, celery roots, garlic, salt, pepper, Italian seasoning and sugar until the vegetables are coated. Carefully place vegetables on the heated pan and roast for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring once after 10 minutes. Allow vegetables to cool before mixing with the tofu cream filling. To Make the Tofu Cream Filling: 1 container (4 ounces) light whipped cream cheese 4 ounces soft, silken tofu, drained 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese 1/2 cup light mayonnaise 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon black pepper In a large bowl, mix together the whipped cream cheese, tofu, Parmesan, mayonnaise, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper until smooth. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to blend flavors. Mix the cooled, roasted vegetables with the tofu cream filling until well-blended. To Make the Croustade: 1 sheet frozen puff pastry, thawed 1 egg 1 tablespoon water 1. Thaw pastry sheet at room temperature for 40 minutes. The oven should already be heated to 400 F if the vegetables were roasted in it, or preheat oven as needed. 2. Unfold puff pastry on lightly floured surface. Roll pastry into 16-by-12-inch rectangle. Using butter- or olive oil-flavored cooking spray, lightly spray a shallow, round casserole dish or a round baking dish. Place sheets of parchment paper or pieces of foil inside bowl with strips overlapping the edges to make the croustade easier to remove. Lightly spray the parchment or foil. 3. Place pastry in casserole dish or baking dish with pastry edges overlapping the sides. Mound vegetable cream-cheese mixture in center of the pastry. Leaving an opening in the center, fold the pastry edges around the filling, crimping edges under to form a bowl. In a small bowl, mix together egg and water to make an egg wash. Brush pastry with egg mixture. Bake the croustade 20 to 30 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown. To serve, allow to cool for 10 minutes. Using a spatula, gently loosen croustade from the baking dish or pan using the sheets of parchment or foil to help move it on to a serving dish. Serve warm or at room temperature.
