The arts speak a language

that transcends ordinary speech and culture. They can reveal truth, nourish the spirit, express depth of faith and open a person to spiritual growth and well-being. They are truly a grace and a gift. Viewing the arts as an expression of faith, Pilgrim Lutheran Church offers the Pilgrim Fine Arts Series as a ministry to the broader community. These programs of music, drama, dance and the visual arts are offered to enrich lives, build bridges between people in the community and foster ecumenical conversation. May this series create a forum for the appreciation of beauty, for an understanding of the challenges inherent in the arts and for the building of community. A Visit from Henry David Thoreau

Hope College Chapel Choir in Concert Directed by Dr. Brad Richmond

Sunday, February 26, 2017 | 4:00PM Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 3650 W 106th St. Carmel, IN Free-will offering taken Anderson University professor of English Dr. Kevin Radaker will portray Henry David Thoreau in this highly acclaimed one-man show. Radaker presents the provocative, eloquent words of Henry Thoreau, America’s mid-nineteenth-century apostle of the wilderness, social critic, and political dissenter. This interactive program will entertain, educate, and inspire! This monologue is set in 1860 when America was poised on the brink of the Civil War. Railroad and industry were changing the character and pace of our lives, and few Americans had begun to consider the value of our wild lands. Thoreau’s words can help us today as we face ecological issues of climate change, pollution, habitat loss, and as we seek to be good stewards of God’s creation.

The Hope College Chapel Choir, from Holland, Michigan, was founded in 1938, has toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada and has traveled abroad on numerous occasions. The 40-voice choir is featured in Hope College’s long-standing tradition, Christmas Vespers, the award-winning PBS television broadcast of which can be seen around the country at Christmastime. The 40-voice ensemble, comprising student musicians from a wide variety of academic disciplines, is dedicated to the performance of the finest sacred and secular choral music. Come be inspired by this group of talented young singers! Dr. Brad Richmond is in his 17th year as Director of Choral Activities at Hope College, where he teaches conducting and voice, and directs the Chapel Choir and College Chorus. Richmond’s choral compositions are published by MorningStar Music Publishers and Mark Foster Music Company.
