About our presenter In the last forty years. Dr. John Dominic Crossan has written twenty-five books on the historical Jesus, earliest Christianity, and the historical Paul. Five of these have been national religious bestsellers. The scholarly core of his work is the trilogy from The Historical Jesus (1991) through The Birth of Christianity (1998), to In Search of Paul, co-authored with the archaeologist Jonathan L. Reed (2004). His most recent work is The Power of Parables: How Fiction by Jesus Became Fiction About Jesus (2012), which will be at the heart of his presentation this year. A Co-Chair of the Jesus Seminar from 1985 to 1996, Dr. Crossan has lectured to audiences across the United States and around the world. He frequently appears in an expert capacity on radio and television. In 2004, he was our guest for the inaugural Lyons Lecture and we are honored to welcome him back in 2012.

The David P. Lyons Lecture in Theology Sponsored by First United Methodist Church To honor the memory and ministry of Rev. David Lyons, a lecture program has been established by First United Methodist Church, Madison, WI. Each spring a distinguished scholar is invited to share insight and understandings in the areas of theology, biblical interpretation, religious history, and spirituality. Realizing God is bigger than our human constructs, David Lyons, who had a deep and abiding faith in the God of love, opened windows and doors to seeing and knowing God outside the human parameters that have defined God for so long.
